The discipline of German Studies in English-speaking countries is in crisis and the situation in British Higher Education can be seen as a paradigmatic example. Symptoms of the crisis are a dramatic decrease in the number of students, financial difficulties and the resulting closures of German Departments. Furthermore, the language skills which finally emerge from universities are not always satisfactory. The present book sheds light on key aspects of the institutionalised teaching and learning of German language in the UK. The first part - the macro-context - surveys the socio-political developments that have recently affected the sector of modern languages and specifically the discipline of German Studies. The second part - the micro-context -, zooms in to the teaching and learning as experienced from both students' and teachers' perspective. Ultimately, by linking the macro-analysis with the micro findings, the present book proposes a number of strategies which could contribute to the optimisation and enhancement of teaching and learning German in British Higher Education.

The Bologna Process, whose objective is the creation of an „European Higher Education Area2, should be concluded in 2010. In the last years the reactions ranged from total rejection over a more temporising attitude to clear and unambiguous affirmation. Hence, the „Fachverband Deutsch als Fremdsprache2 (FaDaF – association for German as a foreign language) has accepted the challenge to enter on the level of science policy the discussion about the higher education structural reforms as far as the subject of German as a Foreign Language (DaF) is concerned. With the help of reports on the current situation and the future of the DaF degree programmes in various European countries, contributions regarding the crucial problems of the higher education structural reforms and a position paper about the curricular basis of the BA/MA degree programmes in the field of German as a foreign language, the basic parameters of the ongoing restructuring in this subject are discussed here. Der so genannte Bologna-Prozess, dessen Ziel die Schaffung einer „European Higher Education Area2, eines europäischen Hochschulraumes, ist, soll 2010 abgeschlossen sein. Reaktionen der absoluten Ablehnung, des Abwartens oder der klaren und eindeutigen Zustimmung prägten das Bild in den letzten Jahren. Der Fachverband Deutsch als Fremdsprache (FaDaF) hat sich deshalb die Aufgabe gestellt, die Diskussion zur Studienstrukturreform im Fach Deutsch als Fremdsprache (DaF) aufzunehmen und wissenschaftspolitisch zu begleiten. Das Lernen bzw. der Erwerb des Wortschatzes ist die größte Hürde, welche ein Lernender in der Fremdsprache nehmen muss. Als Hilfsmittel stehen ihm dabei Lernerwörterbücher zur Seite, von denen immer wieder behauptet wird, sie tragen zum Wortschatzerwerb bei. Welche Voraussetzungen müssen jedoch gegeben sein, damit Lerner- zu Lernwörterbüchern werden? In der Studie wird die Eignung aktueller DaF-Lernerwörterbücher zum systematischen Wortschatzerwerb untersucht. Basierend auf den Erkenntnissen der für diese Frage wichtigsten Bezugsdisziplinen – Wortschatzdidaktik und Lernpsychologie – wird geprüft, welche makro- und mikrostrukturellen Merkmale das Lernen fördern. Auf dieser Grundlage werden sechs Konsequenzen für die Konzeption von Lernerwörterbüchern formuliert. Anschließend wird eine der aus den lernpsychologischen Erkenntnissen abgeleiteten Konsequenzen exemplarisch umgesetzt und mittels Eye-Tracking überprüft, wie die neu gestalteten Artikel von Lernenden wahrgenommen werden und ob die Form der Gestaltung zum (inzidentellen) Wortschatzerwerb beitragen kann. This book presents a new and comprehensive framework for the analysis of representations of culture, society and the world in textbooks for foreign and second language learning. The framework is transferable to other kinds of learning materials and to other subjects. The framework distinguishes between five approaches: national studies, citizenship education studies, cultural studies, postcolonial studies and transnational studies. In a series of concrete analyses, the book illustrates how one can describe and uncover representations of the world in textbooks for English, German, French, Spanish, Danish and Esperanto. Each analysis is accompanied by suggestions of possible supplements and changes. The book points to the need for language learning materials to deal seriously with knowledge about the world, including its diversities and problems.
