The 18th-century rediscovery of the three archaic Greek-Doric temples in Paestum in southern Italy turned existing ideas on classical architecture upside down. The porous limestone temples with rough, heavy columns were entirely unlike the classical architecture travelers to the site were familiar with. Paestum, exceptional in the completeness of its ruins, came to fascinate architects, artists, writers, and tourists alike, who documented the site in drawings and texts. In Rediscovering Architecture, Sigrid de Jong analyzes extensive original source material, including letters, diaries, drawings, paintings, engravings, and published texts, which are attractively reproduced here. The book offers new insights on the explorations of the site, the diverse reactions to it, and their dramatic and enduring effect on architectural thought, as they influenced intellectual debates in England, France, and Italy during the long 18th century. This unique study of the experience of architecture reconstructs Paestum's key role in the discourse on classical architecture and its historiography, primitivism, the sublime and the picturesque, and the growing importance of science and history in architectural thought. This volume examines the multifarious dimensions that constitute the workings of the Hindu temple as an architectural and urban built form. Eleven chapters reflect on Hindu temples from multiple standpoints - tracing their elusive evolution from wayside shrines as well as canonization into classical objects; questioning the role of treatises containing their building rules; analyzing their prescribed proportions and orders; examining their presence in, and as, larger sacred habitats and ritua...

This book offers an exploration of the lesser-known aspects of this dynamically changing field, starting with a look at the paradigmatic forms of traditional architecture before moving on to examining the issues and currents that have unfolded in architecture as it developed on Korean soil in the era of postmodernism?and began to find its way into the world. By taking a historical approach with the more noteworthy developments in Korean architecture, it seeks to support a new understanding, a rediscovery, of a field in full flux. Groundscapes written by Ilka Ruby and has been published by Editorial Gustavo Gili this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with Architecture categories.

Groundscapes explores the 'comeback' of the idea of the ground onto the scene of contemporary architecture. With the decline of heroic modernism in the late 1960s a new generation of architects eager to discover this forbidden land initiated a reterritorialisation of architecture which continues today. As a consequence, we can understand built space and ground space no longer as opposites but as equal elements of the architectural body. Ilka Ruby is an architect and Andreas Ruby is an architectural critic and theorist. Since founding their office textbild in 2001 they have been committed to a cultural engineering of the discourse on contemporary architecture, writing texts, designing books, curating exhibitions, consulting architects and organising architectural symposia for a wide array of cultural and corporate clients. Their publications include Images. A Picture Book of Architecture (Prestel, 2004), The Challenge of Suburbia (Wiley-Academy, 2004) and Hans Scharoun: Haus Moeller (Walther Koenig, 2004). They have been teaching architecture at a variety of universities in Europe. Currently they are visiting critics at Cornell University. For more information see www.textbild.com

Although the disciplines of architecture and structural engineering have both experienced their own historical development, their interaction has resulted in many fascinating and delightful structures. To take this interaction to a higher level, there is a need to stimulate the inventive and creative design of architectural structures and to persuade architects and structural engineers to further collaborate in this process, exploiting together new concepts, applications and challenges. This set of book of abstracts and full paper searchable CD-ROM presents selected papers presented at the 3rd International Conference on Structures and Architecture Conference (ICSA2016), organized by the School of Architecture of the University of Minho, Guimarães, Portugal (July 2016), to promote the synergy in the collaboration between the disciplines of architecture and structural engineering.

Rediscovering Objects From Islamic Lands In Enlightenment Europe written by Isabelle Dolezalek and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-12-30 with Art categories.

This book argues that the provenance of early modern and medieval objects from Islamic lands was largely forgotten until the "long" eighteenth century, when the first efforts were made to reconnect them with the historical contexts in which they were produced. For the first time, these Islamicate objects were read, studied and classified – and given a new place in history. Freed by scientific interest, they were used in new ways and found new homes, including in museums. More generally, the process of "rediscovery" opened up the prehistory of the discipline of Islamic art history and had a significant impact on conceptions of cultural boundaries, differences and identity. The book will be of interest to scholars working in the history of art, the art of the Islamic world, early modern history and art historiography.
