Re Discovering Proximity written by Marika Fior and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-09-01 with Science categories.

This book explores the topic of proximity and its relations in the design of contemporary urban fabrics and public spaces. The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and reflections on the future of cities have lately shed light on the concept of proximity, which is intended as the relationship between communities and urban functions and as relations among people, built spaces, and open spaces. The proximity is a historic and fertile field of interest for American and Northern European urban studies; it is a spatial and social program seemingly surpassed by the styles and rhythms of contemporary city life, but today it is back in vogue with different purposes. Meanwhile, the action research developed by the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies at the Politecnico di Milano for the Municipality of Milan reached its conclusion (2018–2020). The research work focused on contextualizing the new M4 Metro line stations under construction, and jointed mobility flows and places, long-range networks and local ones, boosting the idea of metro stations as regenerative urban thresholds and urban platforms for enabling environmental, sustainable settlement, and active mobility systems. In other words, the action research for Milan shows how to achieve the concept of proximity in the urban design practice in a dense, stratified, and complex urban context.

Dialog between practitioners and academics has increasingly become the exception rather than the rule in contemporary public administration circles. Bridging the gap between theory and practice, Debating Public Administration: Management Challenges, Choices, and Opportunities tackles some of the major management challenges, choices, and opportunities of the twenty-first century facing public managers across various subfields of public administration. Informed by contemporary pressures on public managers to reconceptualize purpose, redefine administrative rationality, recapitalize human assets, reengage resources, and revitalize democratic constitutionalism, the book offers students, practitioners, and researchers an opportunity to take stock and ponder the future of practice and research in public administration. Organized by three sets of major management challenges facing the field—Rethinking Administrative Rationality in a Democratic Republic, Recapitalizing Organizational Capacity, and Reconceptualizing Institutions for New Policy Challenges—the book takes an uncommon approach to the study of these topics. In it, leading practitioners and academics comment on condensed versions of articles appearing in the Theory to Practice feature of Public Administration Review (PAR) from 2006 through 2011. The authors and commentators focus on some of the best current research, draw lessons from that literature for practice, and identify gaps in research that need to be addressed. They expertly draw out themes, issues, problems, and prospects, providing bulleted lessons and practical takeaways. This makes the book a unique one-stop resource for cross-disciplinary, cross-sectoral, and cross-professional exchanges on contemporary challenges.

'Popcorn Trade Routes' presents a fascinating journey through the 6,500-year history of one of the world's most beloved snack foods, weaving together agricultural science, global commerce, and cultural anthropology. Beginning with the discovery of ancient popcorn kernels in Peru's Moche civilization, this comprehensive work explores how a specialized corn variety evolved from a local Native American crop into a global phenomenon that influenced societies across continents. The book uniquely combines three interconnected narratives: the biological evolution of popping corn, the development of international trade routes that facilitated its spread, and the diverse cultural practices that emerged around its consumption. Through careful analysis of archaeological findings, agricultural records, and trade documents, readers discover how specific genetic characteristics and environmental conditions contributed to the development of different popping corn strains, while maritime trade records reveal its journey from the Americas to Europe, Asia, and Africa. The narrative progresses from scientific foundations through historical distribution patterns to cultural impact, examining how different societies incorporated popcorn into their traditions – from religious ceremonies in pre-Columbian civilizations to its role in American temperance movements. Drawing from Native American oral histories, European trade documents, and agricultural records, the book presents a meticulously researched yet accessible account that challenges common assumptions about popcorn's distribution patterns while providing new evidence for early trans-oceanic trade routes.

Urban Heritage Planning In Tehran And Beyond written by Solmaz Yadollahi and has been published by transcript Verlag this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-12-04 with Social Science categories.

Despite the impact of ideological rigidity, the primary challenge of heritage planning in Tehran and beyond lies not in the dominance of an inflexible Authorized Heritage Discourse, but rather in the absence of stable spatial-discursive and administrative structures. Solmaz Yadollahi maps the historical trajectory of conservation and urban heritage planning in Iran, depicting a discursive-spatial assemblage that tends to knock down its accumulated resources. This is in line with Katouzian's portrayal of Iran as a pick-axe society. Residing within this society, the studied assemblage strives to deconstruct the prevailing structures and usher in a fresh one, paradoxically perpetuating the very cycle it seeks to escape.
