They led the Dirty South’s most infamous crew. One became a rap superstar. One ruled the streets. But when the king comes back hard for his throne, who will be left standing? Life couldn’t get better for the Crescent Crew. With an exclusive Mexican pipeline, they’ve got the Southern drug trade on lock. Former founder Qwess is leveraging rap superstardom to break the music industry’s commercial stranglehold. And former leader Reece is fresh off a five-year prison bid—and out to forever secure the Crew’s dominance. But as Reece is working a brutal vendetta, a Crew mutiny will drag him back into all-out street war. Now, between the ambitious young Crew and ruthless OG Reece, only one can live to reign . . . Praise for THE CRESCENT CREW SERIES “Shaun Sinclair taps into the new code and DNA of black and urban life in America, where there’s one foot in the rap game and another foot still out in the mean and hungry streets of capitalism.” —Omar Tyree, New York Times bestselling author and creator of The American Disease ebook series “A bone-chilling tale that will keep the readers longing for more, while revaluating every choice they make.” —NeNe Capri, author of The G Street Chronicles

A twisting path through Austin’s underground music scene in the twentieth century’s last decade, narrated by the people who were there. It’s 1990 in Austin, Texas. The next decade will be a tipping point in the city's metamorphosis from sleepy college town to major city. Beneath the increasingly slick exterior, though, a group of like-minded contrarians were reimagining an underground music scene. Embracing a do-it-yourself ethos, record labels emerged to release local music, zines cheered and jeered acts beneath the radar of mainstream media outlets, and upstart clubs provided a home venue for new bands to build their sound. This vibrant scene valued expression over erudition, from the razor-sharp songcraft of Spoon to the fuzzed-out poptones of Sixteen Deluxe, and blurred the boundaries between observer and participant. Evolving in tandem with the city’s emergence on the national stage via the film Slacker and the SXSW conference and festivals, Austin’s musical underground became a spiritual crucible for the uneasy balance between commercial success and cultural authenticity, a tension that still resonates today. The first book about Austin underground music in the ’90s, A Curious Mix of People is an oral history that tells the story of this transformative decade through the eyes of the musicians, writers, DJs, club owners, record-store employees, and other key figures who were there.

I Hear My People Singing written by Kathryn Watterson and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-05-30 with History categories.

A vivid history of life in Princeton, New Jersey, told through the voices of its African American residents I Hear My People Singing shines a light on a small but historic black neighborhood at the heart of one of the most elite and world-renowned Ivy-League towns—Princeton, New Jersey. The vivid first-person accounts of more than fifty black residents detail aspects of their lives throughout the twentieth century. Their stories show that the roots of Princeton’s African American community are as deeply intertwined with the town and university as they are with the history of the United States, the legacies of slavery, and the nation’s current conversations on race. Drawn from an oral history collaboration with residents of the Witherspoon-Jackson neighborhood, Princeton undergraduates, and their professor, Kathryn Watterson, neighbors speak candidly about Jim Crow segregation, the consequences of school integration, World Wars I and II, and the struggles for equal opportunities and civil rights. Despite three centuries of legal and economic obstacles, African American residents have created a flourishing, ethical, and humane neighborhood in which to raise their children, care for the sick and elderly, worship, stand their ground, and celebrate life. Abundantly filled with photographs, I Hear My People Singing personalizes the injustices faced by generations of black Princetonians—including the famed Paul Robeson—and highlights the community’s remarkable achievements. The introductions to each chapter provide historical context, as does the book’s foreword by noted scholar, theologian, and activist Cornel West. An intimate testament of the black community’s resilience and ingenuity, I Hear My People Singing adds a never-before-compiled account of poignant black experience to an American narrative that needs to be heard now more than ever.
