Given the remarkable circumstances of finding a narrowboat to set up home in, and then discovering they had skills that made living and working anywhere on the water possible, it wasn’t surprising that Giles Byford and Jill Parkinson felt blessed by life afloat. It was a life that suited them and, after several very happy years wandering England’s inland waterways, they decided to commit to a brand new barge both suited to continental Europe and able to get there under its own steam. And so they set about building Hawthorn, which they hoped to spend the rest of their lives on. Initially all was well and it seemed their good fortune was constant and their dreams were coming together perfectly. And then, quite suddenly, it all unravelled... Reedbound is largely about what followed: how the terrifying voyage across the Irish Sea became an act of faith that contrasted with a gentle westward wander along an empty canal to the River Shannon and the heart of Ireland’s waterways. And how, despite feeling vulnerable and nervous, they were determined the best way to recover their confidence in life afloat was to avoid doing any research and simply trust that all would be well. This unusual approach delivered constant surprises, adventures, unexpected spaces and the company of other misfits. Giles began to write – initially a widely read blog, and then articles for waterways magazines – and Jill finally had time to explore her interest in art; the success of which can be seen in the numerous illustrations that are a feature of Reedbound. Reedbound compares and contrasts two inland waterway systems – England and Ireland – and two boating cultures. It’s about Giles and Jill’s approach to travel and life, which is as rare as taking a barge across the Irish Sea. It’s also about the delight of experiencing the Irish landscape and culture through naïve but willing eyes.

Chinese Student Migration And Selective Citizenship written by Lisong Liu and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-08-20 with History categories.

Since China began its open-door and reform policies in 1978, more than three million Chinese students have migrated to study abroad, and the United States has been their top destination. The recent surge of students following this pattern, along with the rising tide of Chinese middle- and upper-classes' emigration out of China, have aroused wide public and scholarly attention in both China and the US. This book examines the four waves of Chinese student migration to the US since the late 1970s, showing how they were shaped by the profound changes in both nations and by US-China relations. It discusses how student migrants with high socioeconomic status transformed Chinese American communities and challenged American immigration laws and race relations. The book suggests that the rise of China has not negated the deeply rooted "American dream" that has been constantly reinvented in contemporary China. It also addresses the theme of "selective citizenship" – a way in which migrants seek to claim their autonomy - proposing that this notion captures the selective nature on both ends of the negotiations between nation-states and migrants. It cautions against a universal or idealized "dual citizenship" model, which has often been celebrated as a reflection of eroding national boundaries under globalization. This book draws on a wide variety of sources in Chinese and English, as well as extensive fieldwork in both China and the US, and its historical perspective sheds new light on contemporary Chinese student migration and post-1965 Chinese American community. Bridging the gap between Asian and Asian American studies, the book also integrates the studies of migration, education, and international relations. Therefore, it will be of interest to students of these fields, as well as Chinese history and Asian American history more generally.

Women And National Trauma In Late Imperial Chinese Literature written by Wai-yee Li and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-26 with History categories.

The Ming–Qing dynastic transition in seventeenth-century China was an epochal event that reverberated in Qing writings and beyond; political disorder was bound up with vibrant literary and cultural production. Women and National Trauma in Late Imperial Chinese Literature focuses on the discursive and imaginative space commanded by women. Encompassing writings by women and by men writing in a feminine voice or assuming a female identity, as well as writings that turn women into a signifier through which authors convey their lamentation, nostalgia, or moral questions for the fallen Ming, the book delves into the mentality of those who remembered or reflected on the dynastic transition, as well as those who reinvented its significance in later periods. It shows how history and literature intersect, how conceptions of gender mediate the experience and expression of political disorder. Why and how are variations on themes related to gender boundaries, female virtues, vices, agency, and ethical dilemmas used to allegorize national destiny? In pursuing answers to these questions, Wai-yee Li explores how this multivalent presence of women in different genres provides a window into the emotional and psychological turmoil of the Ming–Qing transition and of subsequent moments of national trauma. 2016 Joseph Levenson Book Prize, Pre-1900 Category, China and Inner Asia Council of the Association for Asian Studies

Graph Theory written by Ralucca Gera and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-10-26 with Mathematics categories.

This second volume in a two-volume series provides an extensive collection of conjectures and open problems in graph theory. It is designed for both graduate students and established researchers in discrete mathematics who are searching for research ideas and references. Each chapter provides more than a simple collection of results on a particular topic; it captures the reader’s interest with techniques that worked and failed in attempting to solve particular conjectures. The history and origins of specific conjectures and the methods of researching them are also included throughout this volume. Students and researchers can discover how the conjectures have evolved and the various approaches that have been used in an attempt to solve them. An annotated glossary of nearly 300 graph theory parameters, 70 conjectures, and over 600 references is also included in this volume. This glossary provides an understanding of parameters beyond their definitions and enables readers to discover new ideas and new definitions in graph theory. The editors were inspired to create this series of volumes by the popular and well-attended special sessions entitled “My Favorite Graph Theory Conjectures,” which they organized at past AMS meetings. These sessions were held at the winter AMS/MAA Joint Meeting in Boston, January 2012, the SIAM Conference on Discrete Mathematics in Halifax in June 2012, as well as the winter AMS/MAA Joint Meeting in Baltimore in January 2014, at which many of the best-known graph theorists spoke. In an effort to aid in the creation and dissemination of conjectures and open problems, which is crucial to the growth and development of this field, the editors invited these speakers, as well as other experts in graph theory, to contribute to this series.

“Code Name Excalibur”, the first of three books in the Excalibur Series, is an exciting triumphant account of how a young boy transforms into one of the world’s great “spy masters”. His “outside of the box” thinking, compassionate fearlessness, and sheer audacity allows him to prevail against all odds as he challenges fate and charges through a life, filled with fantastic characters, dangerous adversaries and exciting adventures until he is finally forced to make a choice that will define his life and the lives of countless others. But in spite of his heroics, his outrageous antics finally force his admiring Commanding General and mentoring United States Congressman to rein him in for the sake of all concerned. And so, they ship him off to Washington, D.C. for some reining in, and training in, what every spy should know. And, so it was there, behind the hallowed, Kevlar covered walls of the Pentagon, the final transformation took place as the boy was forged into the man they call “Excalibur”.

The Complete Poetry of Du Fu presents a complete scholarly translation of Chinese literature alongside the original text in a critical edition. The English translation is more scholarly than vernacular Chinese translations, and it is compelled to address problems that even the best traditional commentaries overlook. The main body of the text is a facing page translation and critical edition of the earliest Song editions and other sources. For convenience the translations are arranged following the sequence in Qiu Zhao’an’s Du shi xiangzhu (although Qiu’s text is not followed). Basic footnotes are included when the translation needs clarification or supplement. Endnotes provide sources, textual notes, and a limited discussion of problem passages. A supplement references commonly used allusions, their sources, and where they can be found in the translation. Scholars know that there is scarcely a Du Fu poem whose interpretation is uncontested. The scholar may use this as a baseline to agree or disagree. Other readers can feel confident that this is a credible reading of the text within the tradition. A reader with a basic understanding of the language of Chinese poetry can use this to facilitate reading Du Fu, which can present problems for even the most learned reader.

When William Beebe needed to know what was going on in the depths of the ocean, he had himself lowered a half-mile down in a four-foot steel sphere to see-five times deeper than anyone had ever gone in the 1930s. When he wanted to trace the evolution of pheasants in 1910, he trekked on foot through the mountains and jungles of the Far East to locate every species. To decipher the complex ecology of the tropics, he studied the interactions of every creature and plant in a small area from the top down, setting the emerging field of tropical ecology into dynamic motion. William Beebe's curiosity about the natural world was insatiable, and he did nothing by halves. As the first biographer to see the letters and private journals Beebe kept from 1887 until his death in 1962, science writer Carol Grant Gould brings the life and times of this groundbreaking scientist and explorer compellingly to light. From the Galapagos Islands to the jungles of British Guiana, from the Bronx Zoo to the deep seas, Beebe's biography is a riveting adventure. A best-selling author in his own time, Beebe was a fearless explorer and thoughtful scientist who put his life on the line in pursuit of knowledge. The unique glimpses he provided into the complex web of interactions that keeps the earth alive and breathing have inspired generations of conservationists and ecologists. This exciting biography of a great naturalist brings William Beebe at last to the recognition he deserves.

A gently shining aura, shaped coffin-like, formed closely around William Wimmurs rigid, grimacing body. Mortimer the Magnificent Dragon sighed nonchalantly, Oh well, another day, another demon. Morty took a ring of running rainbow fire off one of his dainty, long fingers. He did a calliope version of one of his favorite tunes, Find a Ring, and slid the ring onto Williams left index finger. The flaming ring adjusted to fit William, as if it were an old possession.
