This collection of Paule Marshall's short works illustrates the growth of a remarkable writer. For the first time these stories, long out of print or difficult to obtain, appear together in a single volume. Introducing the volume is Marshall's much acclaimed autobiographical essay, "From the Poets in the Kitchen" from the New York Times Book Review's series called "The Making of a Writer." This collection included newly written autobiographical headnotes to each story and "Merle," a novella excerpted from Marshall's 1969 novel, The Chosen Place, The Timeless People , and extensively reshaped and rewritten for this collection. It stands as an independent story about one of the most memorable women in contemporary fiction.

The present volume is a highly comprehensive assessment of the postcolonial short story since the thirty-six contributions cover most geographical areas concerned. Another important feature is that it deals not only with exclusive practitioners of the genre (Mansfield, Munro), but also with well-known novelists (Achebe, Armah, Atwood, Carey, Rushdie), so that stimulating comparisons are suggested between shorter and longer works by the same authors. In addition, the volume is of interest for the study of aspects of orality (dialect, dance rhythms, circularity and trickster figure for instance) and of the more or less conflictual relationships between the individual (character or implied author) and the community. Furthermore, the marginalized status of women emerges as another major theme, both as regards the past for white women settlers, or the present for urbanized characters, primarily in Africa and India. The reader will also have the rare pleasure of discovering Janice Kulik Keefer's “Fox,” her version of what she calls in her commentary “displaced autobiography’” or “creative non-fiction.” Lastly, an extensive bibliography on the postcolonial short story opens up further possibilities for research.

A lot of unprecedented issues and events happen due to the pandemic. One such event was the 13th edition of the IPL that was held in UAE without any audience. This is a write up about it so that the readers can relive the experience and appreciate the game of cricket. My stories are largely realistic with tiny bits of imagination mixed into it.

From Quetta To Delhi A Partition Story written by Reena Nanda and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-02-10 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

This story is a cameo set against the backdrop of Partition - a decision taken by political leaders in Britain and India that shattered the lives of ordinary people like the family in this narrative who at that time were living in Quetta, Baluchistan. Viewing victims of the Partition of Punjab in the light of post traumatic stress has been long overdue. The narrator's mother's method of coping with the traumatic present was to escape into the past by reliving her memories of Quetta and her beloved Pathans along with the mundane, insignificant little details of the women's daily lives. Her recall hinges on the drama of the trivial, on food, rituals, clothes, religious practices and neighbourhood bonding. It was a syncretic culture, of multilinguism - Urdu,Punjabi and Seraiki, Persian and Sanskrit, of multiple identities through the biradaris - caste, mohalla and religion. The author's grandmother kept the Guru Granth Sahib at home, her mother and sisters practiced Hindu rituals, while her husband was an agnostic. And everyone made pilgrimages to Sufi pirs.

Argues that Paule Marshall’s work collectively constitutes a multigenerational saga of the African diaspora across centuries and continents. From Brown Girl, Brownstones (1959) to The Fisher King (2000), Paule Marshall’s novels, novellas, and short stories include a rich cast of unforgettable men, women, and children who forge spiritual as well as emotional and geographical paths toward their ancestors. In this, the first critical study to address all of Marshall’s fiction, Moira Ferguson argues that Marshall’s work collectively constitutes a multigenerational saga of the African diaspora across centuries and continents. In creating a space for her characters’ interrupted lives and those of their elders and ancestors, Ferguson argues, Marshall trains a spotlight on slavery’s wake and engages her fiction in the service of healing deep global wounds. Moira Ferguson is Professor of English at New York University in London. Her books include Eighteenth-Century Women Poets: Nation, Class, and Gender, also published by SUNY Press, and Subject to Others: British Women Writers and Colonial Slavery, 1670–1834.
