This book presents reference architecture as a key blueprint to develop and evolve critical software-intensive systems, emphasizing both the state of the art in research and successful industrial cases. After outlining the theoretical foundations of reference architecture and presenting an overview of a number of reference architectures proposed over the recent years, this book dives into a set of critical application domains, including defense, health, automotive, avionics, and Industry 4.0, highlighting the respective most relevant reference architectures that have impacted these domains, the experience and lessons learned, insights gained, benefits and drawbacks, and factors that make these architectures sustainable. The book finishes with the most relevant directions for future advances in reference architectures. The content of this book is useful for researchers and advanced professionals in industry in the areas of computing and engineering, as well as in critical application domains that increasingly require interconnected, large, and complex software-intensive systems.

Over the past 20 years, software architectures have significantly contributed to the development of complex and distributed systems. Nowadays, it is recognized that one of the critical problems in the design and development of any complex software system is its architecture, i.e. the organization of its architectural elements. Software Architecture presents the software architecture paradigms based on objects, components, services and models, as well as the various architectural techniques and methods, the analysis of architectural qualities, models of representation of architectural templates and styles, their formalization, validation and testing and finally the engineering approach in which these consistent and autonomous elements can be tackled.

This book originates from a workshop organised by ESPRIT project 20 477, ARES in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, February 1998. ARES is an acronym for Architectural Reasoning for Embedded Systems. Within this project we investigate techniques to deal with problems of software architecture of families of embedded systems. It is the second workshop organised by this project. Its predecessor was held in Las Navas de Marques, Spain, November 1996. The proceedings of the first workshop are only available in electronic format at "http://www.dit.upm.es/~ares/". The second workshop succeeded, even more than the first one, in gathering many of the most prominent people working in the area of software architecture for product families or product lines. This second workshop consisted of six sessions. The first session was meant to report the ARES results, according to the topics of the next five sessions. The remaining sessions dealt with different aspects of software architecture, focussed on applications for product families or product lines. Because there will be a separate book covering all ARES results, the first session is not included in this book. The workshop was chaired by Henk Obbink from Philips Research and Paul Clements from the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. They prepared and presented an overall conclusion at the end of the workshop. This conclusion was used in the introduction to this book.

Design for the Unexpected: From Holonic Manufacturing Systems Towards a Humane Mechatronics Society presents new, even revolutionary, ideas to managing production and production systems which may fundamentally shift the paradigm of manufacturing systems design. It provides guidelines for the design of complex systems that can deal with unexpected disturbances and presents a decentralized control methodology that goes far beyond the traditional hierarchical control approach that currently prevails. The benefits are illustrated by a variety of examples and case studies from different fields, with the book's well-established authors presenting Holonic Manufacturing Systems (HMS) as the framework for the 'factory-of-the-future', and suggesting that the application of biologically inspired control paradigms can control complex manufacturing systems, and that there are far wider applications for these systems than pure manufacturing. In addition, the book explores how this multi-agent control framework can be extended to other fields such as traffic, transport, services, and health care. - Provides a practical control system architecture that can be applied to a wide variety of systems in manufacturing, transportation, logistics, and robotics - Contains a wide range of case studies from different engineering disciplines - Provides a decentralized control methodology that goes beyond the traditional hierarchical control approach that currently prevails - A must-read resource for researchers and professionals alike

With the increasing worldwide trend in population migration into urban centers, we are beginning to see the emergence of the kinds of mega-cities which were once the stuff of science fiction. It is clear to most urban planners and developers that accommodating the needs of the tens of millions of inhabitants of those megalopolises in an orderly and uninterrupted manner will require the seamless integration of and real-time monitoring and response services for public utilities and transportation systems. Part speculative look into the future of the world’s urban centers, part technical blueprint, this visionary book helps lay the groundwork for the communication networks and services on which tomorrow’s “smart cities” will run. Written by a uniquely well-qualified author team, this book provides detailed insights into the technical requirements for the wireless sensor and actuator networks required to make smart cities a reality.
