It is old news that we are in a new information age! And it should come as no surprise that we need new information to help us change our old ways. As clinical laboratory scientists, physicians, and technologists, we need new ideas, processes, tools, and technology to transform our healthcare laboratories from production testing operations into information management organisations. Our future is providing diagnostic and treatment information, regardless where testing is performed and who performs the measurements. To facilitate the transformation to an information management organisation, this publication describes a reference information model for healthcare laboratories. This model allows us to gain new insights into our operations and organisations and helps us to better define and understand our critical information processes. Along with the model, they also provide the computer tools to support that transformation and facilitate the new information management organisation. By coupling theory with technology, they show us the nature of the new organization and start us on the path to the future.

One of the many definitions for a reference information model is: an outline of activities and subjects, important within any health care laboratory facility. Relationships between the laboratory process are described (through information flows) and hierarchially structured. The most important information flows between laboratory processes and the laboratory environment and its customers are also recognized. The relevant data structure, derived from the information flows, is aggregated in a laboratory architecture which is organization independent. An information model can be used to judge the actual situation with regard to information facilities in a particular laboratory. Through the use of a case tool, transferability, transparency, as well as logistical interoperability of the information model are greatly improved. The addition of organization-specific procedures, task-authority-responsibility profiles for employees and hierarchial structures can embed the Reference Information Model for Clinical Laboratories (RILA) in a particular laboratory setting. We developed such a model and needed 40 processes. All were defined in enough detail to be clear but not restrictive. In addition, 40 entities and 259 relationships between entities and proceses were recognized.
