Since D Magazine discovered it in 1986, I have been an admirer of Tom McClellan?s writing. Collected in Reflections from Mirror City, McClellan?s selected, published and unpublished work is a stygian journey?through South Texas, West Texas, Dallas, in and out of madness, but always toward lucidity and spiritual wholeness. From ?Introductory Comments? by Lou Dubose, Editor of the Washington Spectator; with Molly Ivins, co-author of the best-selling Shrub: the Short but Happy Political Life of George W. Bush. I found all the essays thoughtful, moving, intellectually stimulating, and exciting to read. Professor F. E. Abernathy, Editor Emeritus, Texas Folklore Society . . . These pieces are the personal essay at its very best. The Deal of the Art in the right kind of world would be widely anthologized in college texts, and Poetry and Politics, and Populism also. . . . work of the very highest integrity. Dr. Giles Mitchell, Professor Emeritus, University of North Texas.

Mirror Sydney An Atlas Of Reflections written by Vanessa Berry and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-10 with Cities and towns categories.

Throughdelicately wrought essays and hand-drawn illustrated maps, Mirror Sydney chartsan alternative view of the harbour city, to show a place of suburban mysteries, hidden stories, and anachronistic sites. Vanessa Berry, one of Australia's mostacute observers of the urban landscape, casts an attentive eye upon overlooked, odd, and seemingly mundane places, tracing their connections and theirsignificance to the city as a whole. As developmentshadows every aspect of the city's life, Mirror Sydney documents, in avery personal way, the fast-vanishing traces of the recent past, finding newmeaning in minor landmarks and uncelebrated sites. From abandoned amusementparks to mysterious traffic islands; from the railway lost-property office tothe elephant buried in Sydney Park; and from the eccentric murals of theDomain's underground walkway to the remnants of the ill-fated monorail, Berry'scurious gaze discovers an alternative and eccentric, little-known city. Berry's writingbalances the low-key iconoclasm of the punk and indie music scenes with the philosophicalurban investigations of Walter Benjamin and Robert Walser. Her unique style of mapillustration was developed through many years making zines and artworks, collagingdetailed line drawings with text from typewriters and Letraset.

In Venice, magic is not unusual. Merle is apprenticed to a magic mirror maker, and Serafin—a boy who was once a master thief—works for a weaver of magic cloth. Merle and Serafin are used to the mermaids who live in the canals of the city and to the guards who patrol the streets on living stone lions. Merle herself possesses something magical: a mirror whose surface is water. She can reach her whole arm into it and never get wet. But Venice is under siege by the Egyptian Empire; its terrifying mummy warriors are waiting to strike. All that protects the Venetians is the Flowing Queen. Nobody knows who or what she is—only that her power flows through the canals and keeps the Egyptians at bay. When Merle and Serafin overhear a plot to capture the Flowing Queen, they are catapulted into desperate danger. They must do everything they can to rescue the Queen and save the city—even if it means getting help from the Ancient Traitor himself.

From Owls do Cry to The Carpathians, the novels of Janet Frame have challenged our understanding of what fiction does. The Frame Function is a guide for those who are intrigued, stimulated, sometimes baffled by Frame's powerful novels. In The Frame Function, Jan Cronin traces the operation of a prescriptive authorial presence within the novels to offer an engaging 'inside-out' guide to a great writer's work. Drawing on Frame's personal and professional correspondence and the dynamic between that Frame and the various Frames of the novels, Cronin explores key issues: Frame's relationship with her readers; the nature of the 'difficulty' the novels present; and the questions of intentionality Frame's work forces us to address. Each chapter offers readers a tour of one or more Frame novels: how they work; how Frame writes; and the impact these fundamentals have on readers interpreting and engaging with her work. Readers of Frame's books frequently sense the presence of some kind of puzzle to be solved but can't quite distil its parameters. The Frame Function takes as its starting point this capacity of Frame's texts to lure the reader into looking for solutions while simultaneously deterring such behaviour. In crafting a portrait of Frame's compositional processes, Cronin provides new insights into the underlying relationship between prescriptiveness and elusiveness in Frame's work.
