Reflections Of A Would Be Anarchist written by Richard E. Flathman and has been published by U of Minnesota Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with Philosophy categories.

A superbly original version of liberalism by a major figure in political theory. In this provocative work, Richard E. Flathman puts forward his idiosyncratic view of liberalism, one that is particularly concerned with putting freedom and individuality first, one that warns of the individualism-limiting potential of even liberal efforts to promote social justice. Focusing on the ideals he regards as appropriate to liberalism, Flathman analyzes repeated patterns and tendencies that influence societies -- their sustaining institutions. Part I (Ideals) elaborates and vigorously promotes a conception of the ideals appropriate to liberalism and liberal politics, a conception that foregrounds and celebrates individual self-making or self-enactment. Drawing on but critically assessing ideas and arguments from liberal thinkers from Locke and Kant through Mill, Berlin, and Rawls, the work also reaches out to sources usually regarded as not only outside of but actually antagonistic to liberal tradition: Hobbes, Nietzsche, William James, Proust, Ortega y Gasset, and Oakeshott. Part II (Institutions) goes on to critically examine the relationship between these ideals and various institutions that are prominent in all liberal societies -- the rule of law, police power, and institutionalized education. At once attracted and resistant to anarchist, antinomian, and active nihilist arguments, Flathman approaches these institutions in a skeptical and wary spirit influenced by such thinkers as Montaigne, Wittgenstein, Cavell, Derrida, and Foucault. Reflections of a Would-Be Anarchist is a unique attempt to move liberal thought and action toward individuality and away from homogeneity, toward achastening skepticism and away from unifying conceptions of rationality and reasonableness. It will be required reading for political, moral, and legal theorists, as well as anyone concerned with the challenges of sustaining and enlivening liberal thought and action.

Anarchy And Society written by Jeffrey Shantz and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-14 with Social Science categories.

Anarchy and Society explores the many ways in which the discipline of Sociology and the philosophy of anarchism are compatible. The book constructs possible parameters for a future ‘anarchist sociology’, by a sociological exposition of major anarchist thinkers (including Kropotkin, Proudhon, Landauer, Goldman, and Ward), as well as an anarchist interrogation of key sociological concepts (including social norms, inequality, and social movements). Sociology and anarchism share many common interests—although often interpreting each in divergent ways—including community, solidarity, feminism, crime and restorative justice, and social domination. The synthesis proposed by Anarchy and Society is reflexive, critical, and strongly anchored in both traditions.

Education is a challenging subject for anarchists. Many are critical about working within a state-run education system that is embedded in hierarchical, standardized, and authoritarian structures. Numerous individuals and collectives envision the creation of counterpublics or alternative educational sites as possible forms of resistance, while other anarchists see themselves as “saboteurs” within the public arena—believing that there is a need to contest dominant forms of power and educational practices from multiple fronts. Of course, if anarchists agree that there are no blueprints for education, the question remains, in what dynamic and creative ways can we construct nonhierarchical, anti-authoritarian, mutual, and voluntary educational spaces? Contributors to this edited volume engage readers in important and challenging issues in the area of anarchism and education. From Francisco Ferrer’s modern schools in Spain and the Work People’s College in the United States, to contemporary actions in developing “free skools” in the U.K. and Canada, to direct-action education such as learning to work as a “street medic” in the protests against neoliberalism, the contributors illustrate the importance of developing complex connections between educational theories and collective actions. Anarchists, activists, and critical educators should take these educational experiences seriously as they offer invaluable examples for potential teaching and learning environments outside of authoritarian and capitalist structures. Major themes in the volume include: learning from historical anarchist experiments in education, ways that contemporary anarchists create dynamic and situated learning spaces, and finally, critically reflecting on theoretical frameworks and educational practices. Contributors include: David Gabbard, Jeffery Shantz, Isabelle Fremeaux & John Jordan, Abraham P. DeLeon, Elsa Noterman, Andre Pusey, Matthew Weinstein, Alex Khasnabish, and many others.

The American As Anarchist written by David DeLeon and has been published by JHU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-12-01 with History categories.

Originally published in 1978. When compared with socialist and communist systems in other nations, the impact of radicalism on American society seems almost nonexistent. David DeLeon challenges this position, however, by presenting a historical and theoretical perspective for understanding the scope and significance of dissent in America. From Anne Hutchinson in colonial New England to the New Left of the 1960s, DeLeon underscores a tradition of radical protest that has endured in American history—a tradition of native anarchism that is fundamentally different from the radicalism of Europe, the Soviet Union, or nations of the Third World. DeLeon shows that a profound resistance to authority lies at the very heart of the American value system. The first part of the book examines how Protestant belief, capitalism, and even the American landscape itself contributed to the unique character of American dissent. DeLeon then looks at the actions and ideologies of all major forms of American radicalism, both individualists and communitarians, from laissez-faire liberals to anarcho-capitalists, from advocates of community control to syndicalists. In the book's final part, DeLeon argues against measuring the American experience by the standards of communism and other political systems. Instead he contends that American culture is far more radical than that of any socialist state and the implications of American radicalism are far more revolutionary than forms of Marxism-Leninism.

New Fields written by Max Nettlau and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-05 with categories.

In a career spanning nearly six decades, Max Nettlau--"the Herodotus of Anarchy"--produced a vast body of work on anarchist history, published in numerous countries and languages, while compiling one of the most impressive archives of anarchist material in existence. His best known work, A Short History of Anarchism, remains one of the standard accounts of the development of anarchist ideas. At the same time, he produced an impressive body of theoretical work, much of it in the form of internal critiques of present anarchist practices. Although essays like "Responsibility and Solidarity in the Labor Struggle" have been widely translated and disseminated, the majority of this work on anarchism's future development remains little known. During his lifetime, only a single collection of these critiques, the Spanish-language Crítica Libertaria, saw publication. The present anthology is an attempt to at least begin to remedy that lack, drawing together English-language essays published in Freedom and Mother Earth with new translations of work originally published in French. New Fields captures the reflections, questions, and fears of Nettlau from 1895-1921, allowing modern readers both to experience something of that era and to apply these critiques to the anarchist practices of our own era.

This book is a reflection upon the "anarchist turn". It takes three 'newish' anarchists and interprets their work following the method of exegesis. Two questions guide the work. What can the anarchist turn tell us about revolution and nonviolence and what can it tell us about contemporary religion? The protagonists are David Graeber, Timothy Morton and Simon Critchley. This book is of interest to anarchists, activists, and philosophers. Indeed anyone doing and interested in interdisciplinary approaches to important cultural questions and the building of nonviolent cultures should find at least parts of this book interesting.

Prison Memoirs Of An Anarchist written by Alexander Berkman and has been published by Good Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-11-22 with Fiction categories.

'Prison Memoirs of an Anarchist' is Alexander Berkman's autobiographical account of his 14-year imprisonment for an attempted assassination of an industrialist. As an anarchist activist, he hoped to awaken the oppressed American people's consciousness, but his political intent was misunderstood by fellow prisoners and society. Berkman's memoir reads like a diary, tracing his coming-of-age and loss of youthful idealism in prison. His self-imposed distance and moral high ground crumble as he recognizes the flawed humanity in himself and others, including his relationship with fellow anarchist Emma Goldman. The book also notably discusses homosexuality in prison, making it an important political text on the topic. This classic memoir is a must-read for anyone interested in anarchist literature, political violence, and prison reform.
