Before the watershed moment of Joan of Arc’s emergence onto the historical scene in 1429, Charles the Dauphin of France was derisively called by the English and their Burgundian allies, the “King of Bourges,” yet by his death in 1461, he had presided over the expulsion of the English from all of their continental possessions except Calais. Were it not for a teenage peasant maiden, however, history might have taken a different course… She arrived suddenly in the spring of 1429. Her dramatic appearance and short but impactful mission were legendary even in her own times, yet her star would explode in the fires of martyrdom almost as quickly as it rose. Held prisoner for the final year of her life from May 23, 1430 until May 30, 1431, she perished in flames at the stake at Rouen like a nova whose time had come. But her story lives on… Joan of Arc. Virgin, martyr, hero, saint. Take your first steps with her today! Intercultural Modes Of Philosophy Volume One written by Eli Kramer and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-08-30 with Philosophy categories.
Until rather recently, philosophy, when practiced as a way of life, was, for most, a communal enterprise of mutually reinforced personal cultivation. In these times of social isolation, including in academic philosophy itself, it is time, yet again, to revitalize this lost, but vital, intercultural mode of philosophy. This volume characterizes a neglected communal mode of philosophy — the philosophical community — by describing the constellation of metaethical principles (general, axiological, cultural, and dialectical) that cultivates its values. The book draws on examples from across the globe and history, including interviews of adherents of living philosophical communities.

Conrad Ferdinand Meyer (1825-1898) was a poet and novelist, born in Zürich, Switzerland. Meyer was preeminently the artist among German novelists; his style is polished and finely balanced; his scenes are delineated with infinite care, and his subjects always have a certain inner harmony with the spirit of the author's own time. In "The Monk's Marriage" Meyer reached the highest development of the "frame-story." It has been universally admired for the genius and audacity of its invention, for its artistic elaboration, and for the wonderful pen-portrait of Dante, "the wanderer through Hell," whose personality dominates the whole story as he narrates it. This introduction of Dante was a bold stroke, justified only by success. The plot of the tale itself is based upon an account (in Machiavelli's "History of Florence") of a family feud which began the bitter factional strife of the Guelfs and Ghibellines in Florence. The frame is a masterpiece, generally more admired than the story. The tale is characteristically Italian, with its sudden changes of fortune, the breathless development of the plot, the volcanic outburst of passion. The plot, one of the few in Meyer's works in which love is the dominant note, is well developed and told with consummate art. The language is noticeable for its stately dignity, such as befits the character of the narrator, the great Dante. The story has one of "those murderous finales which are Meyer's delight," as Gottfried Keller once wrote to Theodor Storm. And yet, The "Monk's Marriage" ranks as one of the best, if not the best, of Meyer's Novellen.

Few musicians shaped Iberian jazz more than pianist Vicenç "Tete" Montoliu i Massana (1933-97). Fascinated by the modernist aesthetics of mid-century jazz, Montoliu was known for a carefully crafted mix of lyricism and dissonance, a penchant for discordant crashes, and a development of highly original compositions. Beyond Sketches of Spain: Tete Montoliu and the Construction of Iberian Jazz explores the artist's life, musical production, and international reception within a cultural studies framework.
