This work explores a new development paradigm whose central focus is on human well-being. Increase in income is treated as an essential means, but not as the end of development, and certainly not as the sum of human life. Development policies and strategies are discussed which link economic growth with human lives in various societies. The book also analyzes the evolution of a new Human Development Index which is a far more comprehensive measure of socio-economic progress of nations than the traditional measure of Gross National Product. For the first time, a Political Freedom Index is also presented. The book offers a new vision of human security for the twenty-first century where real security is equated with security of people in their homes, their jobs, their communities, and their environment. The book discusses many concrete proposals in this context, including a global compact to overcome the worst aspects of global poverty within a decade, key reforms in the Bretton Woods institutions of World Bank and IMF, and establishment of a new Economic Security Council within the United Nations.

The Right to Development (RTD) is a new and highly contested right. Its emergence is linked to the demand for a `new international economic order’ by developing countries. Composite in nature and integrating civil and political rights with economic, social and cultural rights, the RTD approach underscores participation, a fair sharing of benefits, transparency and non-discrimination. The present volume explores the theoretical and practical aspects of RTD as an alternative to existing approaches to development. It brings together the reflections and insights of some of the finest scholars on the specific aspects of RTD.

The new human development paradigm rests on the human and cultural capital of peoples and revolves around the challenge of increasing the well-being and happiness of people. Therefore, leisure understood in today’s societies as one of the key means to feel good, satisfied with life and reaffirmed in the pursuit of a meaning for life, seems to be ultimately called to play a key role in promoting human development processes. The contents of this book are a good proof of it. Each chapter focuses on a different approach, discipline or group and highlights the potential of leisure experiences for human development. This book is an invitation to reflection and thought on issues that, far from being irrelevant, have a bearing on people's future, in terms of happiness, well-being and quality of life. It is everyone’s responsibility to ensure that future leisure develops under the guidelines of a leisure that contributes to human development.

Many of the concepts, values and basic assumptions on which 'modern' economic and business theory is based do not translate into or convey the same meaning in non-European languages or non-Western cultures as they do in Western societies. This results in a mismatch between what Many of the concepts, values and basic assumptions on which 'modern' economic and business theory is based do not translate into or convey the same meaning in non-European languages or non-Western cultures as they do in Western societies. This results in a mismatch between what have now become global economic values and 'local' cultural ones. Kensei Hiwaki considers a new paradigm - that a sound culture is needed to underpin development, employment and trade, and an optimal development path. This concept is discussed against the background of the author's contention that his own Japanese society has succumbed to unsustainable modern tendencies leading to the antithesis of sustainable development and placing the society and economy in a 'credibility trap' into which it is predicted other countries, like China, might also fall. Professor Hiwaki presents a detailed theoretical framework for balanced socioeconomic development relevant to sustainable development of the global community, explaining the pivotal concepts on which it is based, as well as the institutional and practical implications of adopting the paradigm, including new approaches to taxation, employment, trade, multi-media communications, and global governance. Culture and Economics in the Global Community is a challenging but ultimately hopeful book that introduces new perspectives for leaders in the political arena, in business, in development agencies, and to researchers and others with a professional or academic interest in economics, trade, governance and environmental issues, social policy or cultural anthropology.

This book provides a critical reflection on automated science and addresses the question whether the computational tools we developed in last decades are changing the way we humans do science. More concretely: Can machines replace scientists in crucial aspects of scientific practice? The contributors to this book re-think and refine some of the main concepts by which science is understood, drawing a fascinating picture of the developments we expect over the next decades of human-machine co-evolution. The volume covers examples from various fields and areas, such as molecular biology, climate modeling, clinical medicine, and artificial intelligence. The explosion of technological tools and drivers for scientific research calls for a renewed understanding of the human character of science. This book aims precisely to contribute to such a renewed understanding of science.

This book is a series of essays (13) about some of the more important questions in philosophy and religion. The essays represent the author's take on the most reasonable answers to these questions as well as the justifications for those answers. They are written in an essay form and a colloquial style rather than in the style of a professional journal article in the hope of easing the reader's way through them and rewarding his/her interest and curiosity. No dogmatism here, just a reflective and open attempt to discern what is the case with regard to some perennial and serious issues which commonly confront us.

Thoughts are a natural result of your cognitive activity, and they may be ideas, knowledge, beliefs, impressions, stereotypes, memories, needs, feelings, information, suggestions, and much more. Thoughts are meant to determine directly your behavior throughout life, while you fulfil your needs. Thoughts make the difference if you are successful or not in life, they determine directly your life, and if you happen to neglect, ignore, confuse, or forget them in any manner, then you fail. But aren’t thoughts everywhere, simply popping up in your mind, you use them as they come, and this is how you think and act in life? No, not exactly, since right now, there is this extraordinary idea just about to happen in the world, and it can make you rich beyond your expectations, if you can only generate it yourself, and if you are the first to do so. But can you? Because if you cannot control your reasoning and therefore the generation of your own thoughts at will, then can you actually reason? Or who exactly does the reasoning for you, if you cannot even control it? Can you identify it? Can you model it? Do you know where thoughts come from? No, we do not know it yet, or this is what psychology states, but can you understand your thoughts and entire cognition even without the help of psychology? Do you know what thoughts are and how the human thinking generates them, along with all needs, ideas, feelings, impressions, memories, and decisions? Some thoughts are conscious and some unconscious, and many times, it seems that even the conscious cognitive activity remains uncontrolled, not through human limitations, but through human lack of understanding of the human mind and of the entire human cognitive activity. There is more to know about thoughts, reasoning, intelligence, and behavior, and we will see it throughout the book, along with everything necessary to manage thoughts and thinking, in all circumstances. Because you cannot understand anything in life at a higher cognitive level, if you do not understand the human thoughts, for the simple reason that you use thoughts throughout your reasoning, in order to understand everything in life, including yourself, the world, and your place and meaning in life and in the world. Even more, thoughts in general, and your thoughts in particular, define your reasoning and intelligences, since intelligences count for the world through their reasoning, thoughts, and interconnectivity, just the way living beings count for the world through their acts, behavior, and interconnectivity. Thoughts construct your cognitive system, and they develop you wholly throughout life, through the gradual improvement of your cognitive system. This is why you are who you are, because you think the way you do, because you have the thoughts that you do, and certainly, because you think exactly the thoughts that you do. Throughout this book, we integrate thoughts within the body, brain, mind, and intelligences, studying them in all details and from all perspectives. We study how thoughts originate, develop, and are controlled at the cognitive and social levels. If you want to know more about thoughts, ideas, feelings, learning, and reasoning in general, this book is for you.
