"When we are called to minister to the dying and/or bereaved, many of us who count ourselves as servants of God too easily prejudge the matter and rush in with words and a trite formula. Words have become our trade, jargon our bane, and verbiage our downfall. "Bert Walsh knows this all too well. Only in the last of five chapters does he get around to the things which we are to say in the presence of crisis. But those are words we have long ago learned from reading the New Testament or heard time and again from well-meaning consolers. What is crucial is that which comes before those words are spoken and surrounds them." --from the Foreword by G. Clarke Chapman Jr. Believing that death and bereavement present pastors and believers with the most extreme challenges to faith, Bert Walsh carefully examines the potential for new discoveries, greater personal growth, and maturity in faith offered to those who minister to the dying and bereaved. With his uncommon insight and measured, simple, purposeful style, the author helps those who minister to the grieving to develop a new sensitivity to both spoken and unspoken needs. He expertly demonstrates that there is a time for words of solace and consolation; there is also a time for silence, a time for touching, a time to share tears. Periods of silence no longer need to be awkward or uncomfortable. Rather, they can become productive moments of quiet reflection and prayer.

The methodology of "Reflections on Death, Dying and Bereavement" is mainly philosophical. It is intended to complement scriptural and theological studies. The volume has five main sections that are further divided by chapter. The first section contains foundational considerations. Since the belief in a continuation of life after death or reunion with deceased loved ones offers consolation to many people, the book examines the possibility of human immortality. Various rational arguments are also presented.

Wrestling with the Angel addresses the human struggle to cope with death, dying, grief, and bereavement. The book includes essays, a one-act play, a short story, and poetry, including shape poems, rhyming, structured verse, and free verse. In the one-act play, an angel of death comes for a man who has lived an unexamined life and wants to explain why he is not prepared to leave. The short story offers a humorous look at a man who resists aging by continuing to view himself as the young man he once was. The diverse genres allow for different ways of exploring these issues, but all are intended to engage the reader's emotions as well as intellect. The writings incorporate reflections and quotations addressing common human issues related to our mortality and explore reactions to the loss of a loved one--whether expected, such as the death of an aging parent or someone with a terminal illness, or unexpected, such as accidental death. The final chapters examine how aging causes us to assess our lives and why preparing ourselves for death can enhance the quality of our life. This is a book with many more questions than answers, but the reader is invited to share in the process of finding answers. It is a book that requires the reader to be comfortable with ambiguity, because the reality it describes is often ambiguous--a reality that presents us with many choices but few certainties. Intended Audience: Scholars, hospice workers, funeral home directors, hospital chaplains, ministers, and others who work with bereavement issues; classes in death education and classes for mental health professionals in death and grief; general readers who have suffered the loss of a loved one.

Written in an informal, approachable style, each brief meditation offers grief insight through the rich imagery of stories and scenes from everyday experience, supported by Scripture and a prayer idea. Through these positive, uplifting reflections on life and love and death, you will discern how your faith can grow as a gift of grief through the steadfast love and faithfulness of God. When you read these almost devotionals, you may think, Oh yes, that happened to me or Now I understand more about what it is Im feeling or I thought I was the only one whod ever experienced that or Theres really some plain talk here about human nature. Grief Light also addresses some of the more contemporary, yet seldom fully acknowledged issues that surround grief, including collective/communal grief, incomplete grief, compound grief, and complicated grief. The hope is that the heart and spiritual truths of Grief Light will guide you toward a better understanding of your grief and direct you away from the darkness, toward the light of new life.

Reflections on Grief: Loss, Love, and Happiness is a non-fiction book on grief that begins with Linda telling her own, vulnerable story. Although Linda experienced many events that caused grief, she goes into detail about three incidents involving the death of loved ones. The grief intensified after each experience until it became debilitating and propelled her on a journey to find happiness. She goes through three harrowing experiences. First, her brother who died of Lewy Body Dementia, then her ex-boyfriend who died of complications related to alcoholism, and the final loss is her mother who died of Alzheimer's. A death of a sibling sometimes brings a search for meaning. The search that came about from her sibling's death was the search for her belief in what happens after death. If the death is unexpected, the search for where that person has gone becomes more pronounced. There are no words to describe the intense loneliness felt after the death of a loved one. The mixture of sadness and relief that they are in a better place. She continues on with the signs she has experienced to know her loved ones are still around her, even after they have transitioned. She discusses her coping mechanisms to find happiness with herself and others. Mindset is a big word, but it is also one that if practiced, carries you through times of your life where happiness seems impossible. Lastly, there is a happy ending.

In a modern world, we are continually preoccupied by others' perceptions of our own lives - we have created false hierarchies of human value. Death is a topic that is speculated upon and gossiped about and the acceptance that it is both the beginning and end of a journey has been disregarded. Wouldn't we all be happier if we recognised that every second of life is an infinite gift and so lived accordingly? In Gone Before Us, Fr. Emmanuel Okami guides readers to reflect on death, both spiritually and emotionally, covering topics from grieving for loved ones to preparing for your own death. This book helps readers to recognise that the ultimate goal is to be a citizen of heaven and offers the quiet comfort that even in death, we still speak. Fr. Emmanuel offers a unique insight into the enigma of death and weaves modern events and anecdotes with Scripture and prayer, to help us return to the idea that a good death is simply a holy death - to die in a state of grace.
