"Colloquia of the International Syriac Language Project. The essays collected in this volume probe various linguistic problems, analyze certain lexicographical methods, evaluate selected lexical tools currently available, and set forth descriptions and/or proposals for forthcoming lexical projects. The papers are organized into three groups, depending on their primary language orientation. The first group focuses on selected areas of lexicography for texts written in Classical Syriac. The second group deals with certain areas of semantics and lexicography for Biblical Hebrew. The third group treats aspects of lexical analysis for the Greek New Testament. The common thread that ties the essays together is a focus on lexicography"--

Lexicography is a very special field of research, in which theory arises from concrete problems and practice moulds on theoretical assumptions in a way of working that is at the same time technical and innovative. The volume offers an overview of the main aspects of the state of art of lexicographical research in Europe, with contributions concerning both historical and synchronic dictionaries and a wide spectrum of the main European languages (French, English, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish). Several contributions show the beneficial effects deriving from the close connection between modern lexicography and information technology, which in the last few years profoundly changed the way of designing, realising and using dictionaries. An appendix contains some reflections on lexicography and translation, one of the most important functional goals for both monolingual and bilingual dictionaries.

The present book contains a collection of works developing new trends in theoretical and practical lexicography devoted to manifold description of lexis. All papers are divided into two main sections: Part I, Systemic and Cross-cultural Relations of Words in the Dictionary, presents analysis of cultural issues and phraseology with special reference to English dictionaries for general- and specific-purposes. The main focus is given to the principles of lexicographic presentation of non-equivalent lexis, idioms, clichés, nominations of non-verbal behaviour and proper names of people in bilingual and monolingual dictionaries. Part II, entitled Specialized Dictionaries: Traditions and Innovations, deals with peculiarities of Author Lexicography, Learners lexicography, LSP dictionaries, dictionaries of English verbs, and varieties of the English language in its synchronic and diachronic aspects. This book is based on plenary presentations of the VIIIth school on Lexicography “Synchronic and Diachronic Lexicography: A New Age of Theory and Practice” (Ivanovo State University, September 10–12, 2009) and continues the series of monographs devoted to theoretical and practical problems of modern and historical lexicography: Essays on Lexicon, Lexicography, Terminography in Russian, American and Other Cultures (2007) and Lexicography and Terminology: A Worldwide Outlook (2009) published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing.

Systematic Lexicography written by Juri Derenick Apresjan and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-08-03 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This book unites lexicography with theoretical linguistics. The two fields tend to ignore each other: lexicographers produce dictionaries, linguists grammars. As a result grammars and dictionaries are often discordant and sometimes glaringly incompatible. In Systematic Lexicography Juri Apresjan shows the insights linguistics has to offer lexicography, and equally that the achievements and challenges of lexicography provide a rewarding field for linguistic inquiry. The author presents the vocabulary of a language as a complicated system reflecting a specific view of the world. He does so within an integrated theory of language, in which grammatical and lexical meanings, and the conceptualizations underlying them, blend and interact. Each lexeme, he argues, is a point of intersection of various lexicographic types classes of lexemes with shared semantic, syntactic, pragmatic or mental properties, that are sensitive to the same rules, and which should thus be uniformly described in the dictionary. When any lexeme is viewed against the whole set of linguistic rules, new facets emerge, and these reveal, he shows, key characteristics of words that dictionaries do not currently record. Professor Apresjan not only presents an original, unified theory of language, inspired by the Moscow school of semantics. He also works out its consequences and describes the problems he faced in applying it to the description of Russian. The reader will find that travelling with the author through Russian semantic space is both enlightening and entertaining. The books wealth of lexical facts, illuminated by systematic thought, give it unique character and importance: it will be of great interest to theoretical linguists and to all concerned with writing of dictionaries as well as to semanticists and students of Russian.

Sacred Text written by Juan Pedro Monferrer Sala and has been published by Peter Lang this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Bible categories.

This book, which gathers seventeen contributions, investigates some lexical and textual aspects in the 'sacred texts' - like the Bible in its several textual traditions, and the Qur'ān -, particulary those elements that serve to provide the textual structure with a lexical-semantic framework. These contributions have been focused on several linguistic aspects: etymologies, loanwords, the symbolic or figurative values of the terms used in the text, the syntagmatic potential of the words, and the literary reflection of the terms like the basic reading of the text and its subsequent comprehension.
