In recent years there have been a number of books-both anthologies and monographs-that have focused on the Liar Paradox and, more generally, on the semantic paradoxes, either offering proposed treatments to those paradoxes or critically evaluating ones that occupy logical space. At the same time, there are a number of people who do great work in philosophy, who have various semantic, logical, metaphysical and/or epistemological commitments that suggest that they should say something about the Liar Paradox, yet who have said very little, if anything, about that paradox or about the extant projects involving it. The purpose of this volume is to afford those philosophers the opportunity to address what might be described as reflections on the Liar.

Paradoxes Between Truth And Proof written by Mattia Petrolo and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-12-04 with Mathematics categories.

This book is a collection of essays that offer original logical and philosophical investigations into the century-long endeavor to understand paradoxes. It bridges the gap between the two most prominent traditions in the analysis of paradoxes: the truth-theoretic and proof-theoretic approaches. The truth-theoretic tradition stems from Alfred Tarski's solution to the semantic paradoxes, while the proof-theoretic tradition dates back to Dag Prawitz's analysis of set-theoretic paradoxes in terms of structural proof theory. Rather than viewing these traditions as competing perspectives, this volume advocates for the idea that a deeper understanding of paradoxes requires insights from both truth-theoretic and proof-theoretic conceptions of language and meaning. Although the collection does not aim to be exhaustive, it seeks to highlight the vast scope of the subject and its deep connections to various fields of inquiry. The essays are organized into four sections: the first focuses on methodology, the second and third examine paradoxes through the conventional lenses of logical investigation—semantics and syntax—, and the fourth presents a selection of paradoxes that extend beyond the interplay between syntax and semantics, exploring other dimensions of human rationality.

Lend Me Your Ears written by Antony Jay and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-10-28 with Political Science categories.

Caligula, William Shakespeare, Crazy Horse, and 1,500 other commentators from ancient Greek philosophers to Sarah Palin trade remarks profound, caustic, trenchant, and humorous in this entertaining omnibus. Lend Me Your Ears has a British tinge, but American pols are well represented. Middle and Far Eastern sources are sparsely included. Jay, coauthor of the BBC radio and television series Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister, presents an eclectic assortment of bons mots alphabetically by author. Featuring some 300 quotations new to this edition, the book has an excellent keyword index. Jay's voracious pursuit of sources and discretion in selection are the linchpins that make this a valuable source. He notes in the introduction that "the number of new entries from earlier years is as large as ever, if not larger." Funeral orations, epitaphs, songs, cartoon captions, and slogans ("Burn, baby, burn") contribute to the hodgepodge. Both the pious (including Pius XII) and the rebarbative (Joseph McCarthy) have their say. Competing dictionaries of political maxims are largely nonexistent today. Some are attuned to American affairs, such as Wolfgang Mieder's Proverbs Are the Best Policy: Folk Wisdom and American Politics (2005). Other dictionaries compile the sayings of presidents, including Barack Obama in His Own Words (2007), edited by Lisa Rogak. Jay is especially adept at selecting scathing ripostes by both obscure and well-known British politicians, including Winston Churchill's comment on Stanley Baldwin: "The candle in that great turnip has gone out." Lend Me Your Ears invites readers to eavesdrop on Mark Twain, Sting, and Aeschylus. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All libraries; all levels. General Readers; Lower-division Undergraduates; Upper-division Undergraduates; Graduate Students; Researchers/Faculty; Two-year Technical Program Students; Professionals/Practitioners. Reviewed by C. B. Thurston.

Revenge Of The Liar written by JC Beall and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-12-13 with Philosophy categories.

The Liar paradox raises foundational questions about logic, language, and truth (and semantic notions in general). A simple Liar sentence like 'This sentence is false' appears to be both true and false if it is either true or false. For if the sentence is true, then what it says is the case; but what it says is that it is false, hence it must be false. On the other hand, if the statement is false, then it is true, since it says (only) that it is false. How, then, should we classify Liar sentences? Are they true or false? A natural suggestion would be that Liars are neither true nor false; that is, they fall into a category beyond truth and falsity. This solution might resolve the initial problem, but it beckons the Liar's revenge. A sentence that says of itself only that it is false or beyond truth and falsity will, in effect, bring back the initial problem. The Liar's revenge is a witness to the hydra-like nature of Liars: in dealing with one Liar you often bring about another. JC Beall presents fourteen new essays and an extensive introduction, which examine the nature of the Liar paradox and its resistance to any attempt to solve it. Written by some of the world's leading experts in the field, the papers in this volume will be an important resource for those working in truth studies, philosophical logic, and philosophy of language, as well as those with an interest in formal semantics and metaphysics.

Self-reference, although a topic studied by some philosophers and known to a number of other disciplines, has received comparatively little explicit attention. For the most part the focus of studies of self-reference has been on its logical and linguistic aspects, with perhaps disproportionate emphasis placed on the reflexive paradoxes. The eight-volume Macmillan Encyclopedia of Philosophy, for example, does not contain a single entry in its index under "self-reference", and in connection with "reflexivity" mentions only "relations", "classes", and "sets". Yet, in this volume, the introductory essay identifies some 75 varieties and occurrences of self-reference in a wide range of disciplines, and the bibliography contains more than 1,200 citations to English language works about reflexivity. The contributed papers investigate a number of forms and applications of self-reference, and examine some of the challenges posed by its difficult temperament. The editors hope that readers of this volume will gain a richer sense of the sti11largely unexplored frontiers of reflexivity, and of the indispensability of reflexive concepts and methods to foundational inquiries in philosophy, logic, language, and into the freedom, personality and intelligence of persons.
