This key book - now available in paperback - uses case studies, research findings, and clear examples to examine the sequence and difficulties of China's ownership reforms since the reform and opening up policy was introduced 30 years ago. Leading Chinese academics Zou Dongtao and Ouyang Rihui discuss all aspects of this vital subject, including the changing theories and practice of public ownership, China's modern property rights policies, ownership structures and the consequent economic impacts, developments around private investment and ownership reform, rural land reforms, and China's economic transformation. The book combines rich research knowledge with examples and academic theories, plus quotations, anecdotes, idioms, and Chinese sayings to help elaborate theoretical problems. Examples include the use of Chinese idioms to illustrate various theorems in a Chinese context. Case studies include 'the first enterprise contractor in China' and 'the first private restaurant in China.' Ownership reform is of immense practical concern to the future of China and the world's economy, as well as a key topic in economic theory. The degree of understanding of this phenomenon will influence or even decide the process and pace of other reforms in China. The book supplies important and practical insight into all aspects of ownership reform, which will benefit those countries considering and debating whether to choose between privatization and nationalization, especially socialist countries undergoing reform. The greatest economic challenge facing China in the post-Deng era is the reform of unprofitable, state-owned enterprises (SOEs) which threaten to drag down the rest of the economy. Despite an array of well-intentioned, market-oriented reform measures, these firms have never truly been forced to face the pressure of a bottom line, or the threat of bankruptcy. Forging Reform in China explains how and why these measures have not been sweepingly successful to date, and what it would take to achieve meaningful reform. The author investigates firm-level processes, including case studies of China's steel industry giants, revealing institutional and systemic barriers to market-oriented performance. This book makes a compelling argument that private ownership cannot work in China's current system until governance over complex economic factors has been established, that is, until credit is tightened and market selection processes made to work.

China's urban sprawl has led to serious social cleavages. Unclear land and property rights have resulted in an uneasy alliance between real estate companies and local authorities, with most willing to strike illegal deals over land. The results have been devastating. Farmers live in fear that the land they till today will be gone tomorrow, while urban citizens are regularly evicted from their homes to make way for new skyscrapers and highways. These shocking incidents underscore the urgency of the land question in China. The recent conviction of the Chinese Minister for Land Resources and the forced evictions that have led to the injury and death of ordinary Chinese citizens highlight the case for land reform. Against this backdrop, many scholars criticize China's lack of privatization and titling of property. This monograph, however, demonstrates that these critically depend on timing and place. Land titling is imperative for the wealthier regions, yet, may prove detrimental in areas with high poverty. The book argues that China's land reform can only succeed if the clarification of property rights is done with caution and ample regard for regional variations.

China S State Owned Enterprises written by Hong Sheng and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with Business & Economics categories.

The Nature, the Performance, and the Reform of State-owned Enterprises provides a detailed description of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in China with respect to both efficiency and income distribution. It shows that state ownership in the form of SOEs does not use resources efficiently and has a poor record in income distribution. Moreover, SOEs are found to enjoy unfair advantages in their competition with other firms. To illustrate the point, the book presents data revealing how favored policies, monopolistic powers, and subsidies benefit SOEs. These advantages are worth several trillion yuans a year. It is a sad irony that such wealth of the people is used to beef up the revenues of the SOEs, making their accounts look much better than they should be.This book, with its rich empirical data and information, is an authoritative reference for researchers interested in SOEs. It is also a good read for students of social sciences and the public to learn more about SOEs.
