Justification written by Paul ChulHong Kang and has been published by Peter Lang this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with Religion categories.

This book returns to the true nature of the gospel, justification by grace alone through faith alone because of Christ alone. Fundamental to the book's argument is a rejection of the biblical truth and the faithful heritage of the gospel. By tracing the development of Reformation theology in Luther and Calvin, the giants in the American Great Awakening and the Korean revivals are brought up for analysis: Jonathan Edwards, Timothy Dwight, Sun-Ju Kil, Ik-Doo Kim, Yong-Do Lee, and Sung-Bong Lee. Paul ChulHong Kang makes clear what can be at stake not merely for academic theologians but for all Christians - the gospel itself.

Sisters Crossing Boundaries written by Katharina Stornig and has been published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-02 with Religion categories.

The last third of the 19th century witnessed a considerable increase in the active participation of women in the various Christian missions. Katharina Stornig focusses onthe Catholic case, and particularly explores the activities and experiences of German missionary nuns, the so-called Servants of the Holy Spirit,in colonial Togo and New Guinea in the late 19th and first half of the 20th centuries. Introducing the nuns' ambiguous roles as travelers, evangelists, believers, domestic workers, farmers, teachers, and nurses, Stornig highlights the ways in which these women shaped and were shaped by the missionary encounter and how they affected colonial societies more generally. Privileging the sources produced by nuns (i.e. letters, chronicles and reports) and emphasizing their activities, Sisters Crossing Boundaries profoundly challenges the frequent depiction of women and particularly nuns as the largely passive observers of the missionizing and colonizing activities of men. Stornig does not stop at adding women to the existing historical narrative of mission in Togo and New Guinea, but presents the hopes and strategies that German nuns related to the imagination and practice of empire. She also discusses the effects of boundary-crossing, both real and imagined, in the context of religion, gender and race.

Europe As The Other written by Judith Becker and has been published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-12-11 with Religion categories.

There has been much academic debate over recent years on Europe defining itself over against the »Other.« This volume asks from the opposite perspective: What views did non-Europeans hold of »European Christianity«? In this way, the volume turns the agency of definition over to non-Europeans. Over the last centuries, the contacts between Europeans and non-Europeans have been diverse and complex. Non-Europeans encountered Europeans as colonialists, traders, missionaries and travellers. Most of those Europeans were Christians or were perceived as Christians. Therefore, in terms of religion Europe was often identified with Christianity. Europeans thus also conveyed a certain image of Christianity to non-European countries. At the same time, non-Europeans increasingly travelled to Europe and experienced a kind of Christianity that often did not conform to the picture they had formed earlier. Their descriptions of European Christianity ranged from sympathetic acceptance to harsh criticism. The contributions in this volume reveal the breadth of these opinions. They also show that there is no clear line of division between »insiders« and »outsiders«, but that Europeans could sometimes perceive themselves as being »outsiders« in their own culture while non-Europeans could adopt »insider« perspectives. Furthermore, from these encounters new religious and cultural expressions could emerge.

The Churches of the Union. History – Theology – Perspectives The union between Lutherans and Reformed at the beginning of the 19th century is underestimated, its formative function for most regional churches in Germany is mostly unknown. Mediation theology and liberalism created different theological systems within the Union that deserve historical respect. At the same time, the idea of the Union today faces new challenges in the communication processes of the so-called "Uniting Churches" in the context of ecumenism, confession and development. The book gives an overview of the history of the German Union Churches, of theologies and theologians. In addition there are case studies on the history of the Union from all continents as well as a study on the role of the Union Churches today.

[Reformation ;Formations and Effects. Speyer Lectures] The impulses that were set in motion by the Reformation caused changes not only in the church and in popular piety but also in the structures of society as well as the legal and political dimensions of the world of that time. The essays that appear in this collection, which arose primarily out of the annual themes of the Reformation Decade, provide vantage points from which to view the capacity of the Reformation to shape elements of society with lasting effect. The essays span a wide spectrum from the sixteenth into the early nineteenth centuries and open perspectives on the early spread of the reformational message, forms of piety and catechetical instruction, as well as the legal reordering resulting from politically motivated regulations set down in religious peace treaties and an ecclesiastically arranged Union.

When Jesus ascended to heaven and sat down at the right hand of God the Father, He poured out His Holy Spirit at Pentecost. This significant historical and redemptive event was not the last time Christ poured out His Spirit in redemptive history. Mindful of these subsequent acts, Pentecostal Outpourings , presents historical research on revivals in the Reformed tradition during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Investigating the British Isles, it observes the outpourings experienced among Welsh Calvinistic Methodists, Irish Dissenters, Calvinistic English Baptists, and Scottish Presbyterians. It then moves on to evaluate the revival instincts among Presbyterians, Congregationalists, Baptists, and the Dutch Reformed in America. May the knowledge of these outpourings of the Holy Spirit help us seek God earnestly to revive His Church once again. Table of Contents: Preface - Steve Lawson I. Revival in the British Isles 1.
