Das 19. Jahrhundert markiert innerhalb der reformierten Kirchenfamilie einen inhaltlichen Neuansatz. Kam im 17. Jahrhundert die Bekenntnisbildung mit ihrer Lehrverfestigung im Rahmen der reformierten Orthodoxie vorläufig zu einem Stillstand, blühte diese zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts unter veränderten theologischen wie kirchenpolitischen Vorzeichen erneut auf. Neben verfassten reformierten Territorialkirchen bemühten sich auch staatsunabhängige reformierte Kirchen darum, ihren Glauben in ihrer je eigenen Lebenssituation aufs Neue zu bezeugen. Der Band 4/1 dokumentiert diese reformierte Bekenntnisbildung des 19. Jahrhunderts; der geographische Rahmen weitet sich in diesen Jahrzehnten über Europa hinaus bis nach Asien und Nordamerika. Die einzelnen Bekenntnistexte wurden eingeleitet und bearbeitet von William Black, Eberhard Busch, Emidio Campi, Rieke Eulenstein, Philip H. Eveson, Matthias Freudenberg, Pierre-Yves Kirschleger, David Komline, Andreas Mühling, Peter Opitz, Georg Plasger und Yoshiki Terazono.

Gerade aus solcher Rückbesinnung und Erfahrung von Vätern wie Müttern im Glauben lernt sie, den Weg der Kirche nach vorne auszurichten – in bewusster Verbundenheit mit den reformatorischen Entscheidungen in der Erkenntnis des Evangeliums. Dazu ist historisches Rüstzeug unerlässlich. Mit Band 5 wird die historisch-kritische Edition der Reformierten Bekenntnisschriften in den Originalsprachen durch einen Auswahlband ergänzt, der eine Auswahl repräsentativer Bekenntnistexte in zeitgenössischer deutscher Übersetzung bietet und damit eine leichtere Zugänglichkeit ermöglicht. Sie umfasst die gesamte Zeitspanne von den Anfängen bis in die Gegenwart und berücksichtigt besonders die Wirkungsgeschichte und die geschichtliche Bedeutung der Bekenntnistexte.

This study describes the origins of early Reformed confessional development using the example of those congregations of religious refugees most heavily influenced by John Laski: the congregation at Emden and the Dutch and French Strangers’ Churches in London. At its center are questions about the congregation as the location of ecclesiology. The outlines of Laski’s theology--which viewed the congregation as the communion of the body of Christ--are described in comparison to the approaches of other Reformers and in relationship to daily reality in the second half of the sixteenth century. Working from a rich base of source materials, the author discusses the development of teachings on church offices and the practice of church discipline, thus illuminating the self-understanding of the three congregations. Becker shows how reciprocal influences and attempts to conform led to the unification of doctrine and community life within these congregations.
