Good vision is more than 20/20 on a Snellen visual acuity chart. The modern ophthalmologist understands that contrast sensitivity, near and distance vision, performance under light and dark conditions, and the brain's interpretation of input from the sensory apparatus, are all important elements in patients' quality of vision. In Quality of Vision: Essential Optics for the Ophthalmic Surgeon, ophthalmologist and optics expert Dr. Jack T. Holladay explores the elements of vision that lie beyond Snellen testing. He explains the Quality of Vision addresses: - Measuring and treating astigmatism in corneal and IOL surgery - The importance of correcting spherical aberration in cataract and refractive surgery - IOL calculations after refractive surgery - Promising approaches to the correction of presbyopia - Other practical topics the clinician can use every day Recognized as the leader in ophthalmic optics, Dr. Holladay incorporates practical aspects of daily practice into each chapter as he expertly explains the scientific principles, mathematical formulas, and theories behind these important issues. Additionally, Quality of Vision includes numerous color illustrations to provide visual representations of the text's key points. Dr. Holladay discusses what's on everyone's mind: - How to take the best measurements and perform the best calculations to ensure good outcomes in cataract and refractive surgery - How neural adaptation can improve outcomes - How today's excimer laser systems deliver excellent optical correction, and why tomorrow's systems will perform even better Quality of Vision: Essential Optics for the Ophthalmic Surgeon is the most complete and practical reference for ophthalmologists looking to increase their understanding of optical physics and their ability to deliver good vision to their patients after cataract and refractive surgery.

Retinoscopy is an eye exam that determines the refractive error of the eye (long sighted, short sighted, astigmatism). A refraction test indicates the strength of the prescription needed for glasses or contact lenses. The new edition of this book provides a concise overview of clinical refraction. Presented in an easy to read format, it is divided into two main sections. The first part explains basic clinical procedures for routine refraction, beginning with an introduction to instruments and the procedure, followed by aspects of the test for different disorders including myopia (short sightedness), astigmatism, keratoconus and refraction in children. Section two provides in depth discussion on retinoscopy and correct use of the retinoscope. The second edition has been fully revised and updated to explain the latest advances in the field, and is further enhanced by clinical images and figures. Key points Practical guide to clinical refraction and retinoscopy Fully revised and updated second edition Explains basic procedures and instruments for refraction test and refraction in different ophthalmic disorders Previous edition (9789351520634) published in 2014

From his early career as an art critic during the sixties to his art historical writings of recent decades, Michael Fried has remained one of the most controversial and fascinating art writers of the late twentieth-century. The theoretical and historical aftereffects of Fried's art criticism continue to be played out in contemporary art and criticism, while his art historical studies impinge on many of the most pressing recent debates in art history and theory. This collection brings together for the first time a range of scholarly responses to Fried's art criticism, art history, and poetry. It illuminates Fried's distinguished contribution to the study of art, while taking his work in exciting new directions. This book will be of significant interest to art historians, those engaged in contemporary art and criticism, as well as critical and visual theory. First published in 2000, it remains the only anthology devoted to analysis of the work of this prodigious scholar.

Refracted Visions written by Karen Strassler and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-04-20 with Social Science categories.

A young couple poses before a painted backdrop depicting a modern building set in a volcanic landscape; a college student grabs his camera as he heads to a political demonstration; a man poses stiffly for his identity photograph; amateur photographers look for picturesque images in a rural village; an old woman leafs through a family album. In Refracted Visions, Karen Strassler argues that popular photographic practices such as these have played a crucial role in the making of modern national subjects in postcolonial Java. Contending that photographic genres cultivate distinctive ways of seeing and positioning oneself and others within the affective, ideological, and temporal location of Indonesia, she examines genres ranging from state identification photos to pictures documenting family rituals. Oriented to projects of selfhood, memory, and social affiliation, popular photographs recast national iconographies in an intimate register. They convey the longings of Indonesian national modernity: nostalgia for rural idylls and “tradition,” desires for the trappings of modernity and affluence, dreams of historical agency, and hopes for political authenticity. Yet photography also brings people into contact with ideas and images that transcend and at times undermine a strictly national frame. Photography’s primary practitioners in the postcolonial era have been Chinese Indonesians. Acting as cultural brokers who translate global and colonial imageries into national idioms, these members of a transnational minority have helped shape the visual contours of Indonesian belonging even as their own place within the nation remains tenuous. Refracted Visions illuminates the ways that everyday photographic practices generate visual habits that in turn give rise to political subjects and communities.
