Josée's story has put the reality of life out there. "You wake up in the morning with a normal life, and in the afternoon, gunshots make you leave everything you had behind" Said Josée. Her story tells how you can still fight for your rights even at a younger age. When she was a teenager, she was trapped in the war Zones in three different East African countries (Burundi civil war 1993, Rwandan Genocide 1994 and Congo DRC civil war 1996). "I was born refugee and always found myself in the same position in every country that I have lived in, until the age 29" She said. She was used to running away because of war and became so traumatised to believe that she could settle or feel comfortable living in a new country without being worried that anytime things might turn around the wrong way. She always thought that war might break down and make her leave again. In her story of being a Survivor Champion, she also opens up about her experiences of domestic violence, living an emotionally abusive life and many more tragedies that will be found in the pages of this book. Josée's story shows that you can always be adventurous and try to move to other places for a better life. She says: "The best decision I have ever made in life, was moving to other places (countries, cities) for a better life. You don't have to settle for a painful life"

Life S Journey Of A Refugee written by Edwin Stalzer and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with German Americans categories.

Life's Journey of a Refugee is a unique voyage from the cauldron of early 20th-century ethnic cleansing to the melting-pot of the mid-century American Dream, from the wrong side of World War II through the gang wars of 1950's Brooklyn and the triumph and tragedies of postwar America. For six hundred years the Catholic Land of Gottschee has endured as a remote outpost of the House of Austria, the outermost point of the Holy Roman Empire, a "linguistic Island" of medieval German in present-day Slovenia. It has withstood the Bosnian Warlord and Napoleon, but German catastrophe in World War I brings tension with the local Slavs to a simmer, hastening the exodus of educated Gottscheers. Edwin Stalzer, the author, is born at the boiling point, the moment of Gottschee's final tragedy. Life's Journey of a Refugee takes you through his life in an Austrian refugee camp from 1945 to 1952, his escape to America, and his triumphant battle for the "American Dream".

She also describes her history of sexual abuse by a Catholic priest for seven years, its impact on her life, and how she found the strength to extricate herself from the perpetrator's control. This moving and inspiring book is a human story about trauma, hope, resilience, and the power of the human spirit to survive and thrive under the most difficult circumstances.

‘This is Doro and he is beautiful.’ So begins the extraordinary story of Doro Ģoumãňęh, who faced an unimaginable series of adversities on his journey from persecution in The Gambia to refuge in France. Doro was once a relatively prosperous fisherman, but in 2014, when the country’s fishing rights were stolen and secret police began arresting Gambian fishermen, Doro left home, fleeing for his life. From Senegal to Libya to Algeria and back to Libya, Doro fell victim to the horrific cycle of abuse targeted at refugees. He endured shipwrecks, torture and being left for dead in a mass grave. Miraculously, he survived. In 2019, during one of his many attempts to reach Europe, Doro was rescued by the boat Sea-Watch 3 in the Mediterranean, where he met volunteer Brendan Woodhouse. While waiting out a two-week standoff – floating off the coast of Sicily, as political leaders accused Sea-Watch, a German organisation that helps migrants, of facilitating illegal entry to Europe – a great friendship formed. Told through both Doro’s and Brendan’s perspectives, Doro touches on questions of policy and politics, brutality and bravery, survival and belonging – issues that confront refugees everywhere. But ultimately it is one man's incredible story – that of Doro: refugee, hero, champion, survivor and friend.

The Unbelievable True Story of a Vietnamese Refugee Who Not Only Made the United States Her Home, But Learned the True Value of Hope, Love, and Religion Along the Way The soles of Nhi Aronheim's feet still bear the scars of her escape from Vietnam—trudging through the jungles of Cambodia as a twelve-year-old with a group of strangers seeking the land of opportunity: America. Her quest for survival through the Cambodian jungle eventually led her to a boat that took her to Thailand and an orphanage where Nhi lived for two years until she qualified for refugee status in the United States. Years later, she returned to Vietnam with a film producer to reunite with the family she never thought she’d see again. A second trip to Vietnam brought her two mothers, birth and adopted, face to face. Yet Soles of a Survivor isn’t just another inspirational survival story. It’s about the lessons Nhi learned about humanity, diversity, and unconditional love since arriving in the United States. She now has a deeper appreciation for the parallels between the Jewish and Vietnamese cultures, and others. After she met her Jewish beau, they got married. She eventually converted to Judaism, though the process was challenging for an Asian woman adopted into a Christian household. Her story shows it matters less what religion we’re part of, as long as we radiate goodness to those we meet. Now she relishes being a Vietnamese Jew. Having come full circle from prosperity to poverty and back, Nhi hopes to encourage others to believe that in spite of overwhelming odds, all things are possible if one has an intense desire, focused energy, and the audacity to grasp presented opportunities.

BORDERS, BOMBS, AND... TWO RIGHT SHOES.WWII through the Eyes of a Ukrainian Child Refugee SurvivorThe Author writes in the Introduction: "In my memoir, many brief scenes of the reality that I had to face during WWII demonstrate once again how some of our human species are capable of bringing utter devastation to others of our own kind. Still, at the same time, there are also examples proving that we can manage to survive even great adversities. Yet, in order to survive a life-threatening journey, it usually takes a helping hand from others, who thus prove their own humanity."A CHILD'S JOURNEY THROUGH WWIIWWII shaped the Author's daily life from the age of 4 through 11. In 1939, a communist/Russian invasion of Western Ukraine took place, and with it not just the beginning of war, but the horrors it had brought to the family and friends, causing the death of her grandfather, a Ukrainian Greco-Catholic priest. In 1941, a day before a Nazi invasion, the Author witnessed charred bodies of victims of a Russian massacre of Ukrainian political prisoners in her city of Stryi. Soon, the Nazis replaced the communists: their ideology introduced ghettos for the Jewish population, threatening all others with the severest punishment for sheltering any Jews. The little girl and her mother took great risk when they agreed to help a Jewish girl, and later also sheltered a young Jewish woman. Many of the family's friends acted similarly, providing shelter to Jewish neighbors and strangers, including important rabbis (such as The Great Rabbi Robeach of Belz, whom Raoul Wallenberg came to visit, while the Rabbi was in hiding). In 1944, the Soviets were again at the city's doorstep, and for many Ukrainians that meant renewed arrests, executions, or exile to Siberia. The Author's family became refugees, passing through Poland, Slovakia, Austria, and Germany, including a stay in a German internment camp, and later working on a farm and at a railroad yard. After the war ended, a new threat faced most the 2.5 to 3 million East European Ostarbeiter (slave workers) and refugees in Germany: Russia demanded that all the refugees whose country it invaded even for two years, were to be forcibly "repatriated", although not to their own patria, but to the labor camps in Siberia. Finally, over 200,000 Ukrainian refugees found haven in Displaced Persons camps for various nationalities. During 1945-1948, these camps had a substitute town infrastructure, including schools, theaters, choirs, publications, and chapels for various denominations. They also provided training for new occupations in overseas countries that were ready to take in these refugees. As a child, the Author survived interrogations, three execution attempts, daily bombardments, and extensive nomadic wanderings, mostly in freight trains. Yet, her family survived, mostly by chance, and through the kindness of friends and several complete strangers. The Author provides other examples about WWII events experienced by her and some of her friends or acquaintances. In order to help the reader place the depicted events within a historical framework, the book includes historical maps and timelines of events that had influenced her life as well as that of her ancestors. There is also a timeline, illustrating how historical events kept being repeated and continued to affect her people throughout the 20th century. Another timeline refers to the family's odyssey during WWII. Information is also included about the Author's maternal ancestors, the Shankovskys, who represented 16 generations of Ukrainian Greco-Catholic priests. Many of the historical events affecting the Author's family, took place in Ukraine for over a millennium, in the vicinity of the thousand year-old Svitovyd statue, on the banks of the Zbruch River. For centuries, this river served as the border between the East and the West. The books has 5 maps, 78 photos and documents, a glossary of terms, and an index of names.
