Après Paramaribo en 1998 et la Havane en 1999, Cayenne a accueilli la conférence annuelle de l'Association des Historiens de la Caraïbe (AHC) du 16 au 20 avril 2000. L'AHC regroupe des historiens du bassin de la Caraïbe ainsi que des membres venant des universités et des organismes de recherche des Etats-Unis, du Canada, du Mexique, du Venezuela et du Brésil et de certaines universités de l'Union Européenne.
