From Corinthians to Hell-Born Babes - The Regency underworld revealed Francis Grose's Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue and later versions and editions contain hundreds of words and phrases that take us into a colourful, violent and alien late Georgian and Regency world. Here we encounter criminals, gamesters, sportsmen, gentlemen and prostitutes as they fight, cheat, thieve, gamble and carouse their way through London's underworld. The dictionaries themselves are all arranged in alphabetical order of the terms being defined, making it impossible to find a word for a specific thing, or browse related terms, without reading through the entire volume. This book arranges the words and phrases from two editions of Grose, Pierce Egan's version of the book and John Bee's Slang: A Dictionary to make them accessible both thematically and by an index. This book is designed for anyone interested in the period, its language and what it reveals and can be used alongside the dictionaries themselves - available in both reprints and e-versions.

Dominic Ransleigh has nothing left to live for. Disfigured and impaired on the battlefield he has retreated to a life of solace in the countryside. A life everyone is content to let him have. Everyone, except his new neighbour Theordora Branwell. Theo knows a thing or two about grief after having lost her fiancée to the war. She's ready to move forward and spread her new outlook on life by opening a home to war orphans. With so much renewal and growth sprouting under her own roof, she can't help but reach out to Dom. But Dom doesn't expect his annoyance at the girl next door to turn to attraction, and Theo couldn't prepare herself for the lust that overcomes her. Theoretically they make the perfect fit, but realistically Theo isn't as innocent as she appears, clinging to a secret that has lived on for too long. When an enemy from Theo's past threatens all she holds dear, Dom knows he has to help her...but how will he react when she reveals her secret? The Rake to Reveal Her is a full–length regency romance of white hot lust and scandal. Feeling like a cliché, Lady Marian Lawrence sets out to snare a rich husband to save her family from ruin. Except with her biting wit and lack of beauty, the task is practically Sisyphean. Hiding her true self, she sets her cap for wealthy, amiable Lord Darley—until Darley’s best friend blocks their path to the altar. A man who has vowed never to marry, Reginald Montague is as determined to prevent a fortune hunter from snaring Darley as Marian is to have a wealthy husband. Far from rich but possessed of an aristocratic lineage, Montague is prepared to do anything to stop Marian, including seduce her. With dazzling skill and subtle stratagem, he sets out to change Marian’s dislike for him into desire—as Marian struggles to keep the lie she’s living from being revealed by a truly disastrous love… “A deliciously light-hearted traditional Regency." —Mary Jo Putney, author of No Longer A Gentleman

Perilous Performances written by Katherine Crawford and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-11-30 with History categories.

In a book addressing those interested in the transformation of monarchy into the modern state and in intersections of gender and political power, Katherine Crawford examines the roles of female regents in early modern France. The reigns of child kings loosened the normative structure in which adult males headed the body politic, setting the stage for innovative claims to authority made on gendered terms. When assuming the regency, Catherine de Medicis presented herself as dutiful mother, devoted widow, and benign peacemaker, masking her political power. In subsequent regencies, Marie de Medicis and Anne of Austria developed strategies that naturalized a regendering of political structures. They succeeded so thoroughly that Philippe d'Orleans found that this rhetoric at first supported but ultimately undermined his authority. Regencies demonstrated that power did not necessarily work from the places, bodies, or genders in which it was presumed to reside. While broadening the terms of monarchy, regencies involving complex negotiations among child kings, queen mothers, and royal uncles made clear that the state continued regardless of the king--a point not lost on the Revolutionaries or irrelevant to the fate of Marie-Antoinette.

A historian reveals the grittier side of Regency England, far from the country houses and costume balls of high society. Often upheld as a period of elegance with many achievements in the fine arts and architecture, the Regency era also encompassed a time of great social, political, and economic upheaval. In this insightful social history, the emphasis is on the lives of those not born into nobility—what it was like for the poor, and what challenges they faced. Using a wide range of sources, James Hobson shares the stories of real people. He explores corruption in government and elections, “bread or blood” rioting, the political discontent felt, and the revolutionaries involved. He explores attitudes to adultery and marriage, and the moral panic about homosexuality. Grave robbery is exposed, along with the sharp pinch of food scarcity, prison, and punishment. Venturing beyond the images we have from Jane Austen’s novels or costume-drama films, this book reveals a society where the popular hatred of the Prince Regent was widespread and where laws and new capitalist attitudes oppressed the poor—a society in the throes of change.
