The silent coexistence of contemporary and environmental history has changed into an eloquent exchange and has initiated several cooperations in recent years. This is due both to socially-influential environmental challenges as the "climate crisis" and 20th century historians who are closely linked with environmental history. The contributions in this issue explore the potential of an environmental-historical view of Austria in the 20th century on the basis of various aspects: the mobilisation of resources and protests against it during Nazism, the acceleration of material and energy flows and the respective debates ignited by the Marshall Plan, the social consumption of nature and the mobilised environmental movement in the 1970s, as well as photographic representations of Austrian petro-modernity.

National parks are one of the most important and successful institutions in global environmentalism. Since their first designation in the United States in the 1860s and 1870s they have become a global phenomenon. The development of these ecological and political systems cannot be understood as a simple reaction to mounting environmental problems, nor can it be explained by the spread of environmental sensibilities. Shifting the focus from the usual emphasis on national parks in the United States, this volume adopts an historical and transnational perspective on the global geography of protected areas and its changes over time. It focuses especially on the actors, networks, mechanisms, arenas, and institutions responsible for the global spread of the national park and the associated utilization and mobilization of asymmetrical relationships of power and knowledge, contributing to scholarly discussions of globalization and the emergence of global environmental institutions and governance.

This volume on the environmental history of contemporary Austria offers an overview of the field, as well as several topical case studies. In addition to highlighting some innovative methodological approaches, the essays also show how important the environment has been to some of the most crucial aspects of the recent Austrian past. Subjects covered in Austrian Environmental History include: the role of nature in nation-building since the collapse of the Habsburg Monarchy; the reshaping of landscapes during the economic mobilization of the National Socialist period; the function of the Marshall Plan in exploiting natural resources on a previously impossible scale; the socio-natural transformations powered by the Austrian tourist industry; and Austria's new reliance on hydropower, which has transformed hydrology and given rise to social conflicts. Together these essays demonstrate how the study of humanity's interdependence with the natural world uncovers new insights into Austrian history.

Today, the environment seems omnipresent in European policy within and beyond the European Union. The idea of a shared European environment, however, has come a long way and is still being contested. Greening Europe focuses on the many ways people have interacted with nature and made it an issue of European concern. The authors ask how notions of Europe mattered in these activities and they expose the many entanglements of activists across the subcontinent who set out to connect and network, and to exchange knowledge, worldviews, and strategies that exceeded their national horizons. Moving beyond human agency, the handbook also highlights the eminent role nature played in both "greening" Europe and making Europe a shared environment.

Ecology Economy And State Formation In Early Modern Germany written by Paul Warde and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-06-29 with History categories.

This is an innovative analysis of the agrarian world and growth of government in early modern Germany through the medium of pre-industrial society's most basic material resource, wood. Paul Warde offers a regional study of south-west Germany from the late fifteenth to the early eighteenth century, demonstrating the stability of the economy and social structure through periods of demographic pressure, warfare and epidemic. He casts light on the nature of 'wood shortages' and societal response to environmental challenge, and shows how institutional responses largely based on preventing local conflict were poor at adapting to optimise the management of resources. Warde further argues for the inadequacy of models that oppose the 'market' to a 'natural economy' in understanding economic behaviour. This is a major contribution to debates about the sustainability of peasant society in early modern Europe, and to the growth of ecological approaches to history and historical geography.
