Tracing Your Pre-Victorian Ancestors is the ideal handbook for family historians whose research has reached back to the early nineteenth century and are finding it difficult to go further. John Wintrip guides readers through all the steps they can take in order to delve even more deeply into the past. Carrying research through to earlier periods is more challenging because church registers recorded less information than civil registration records and little census data is available. Researchers often encounter obstacles they don't know how to overcome. But, as this book demonstrates, greater understanding of the sources and the specific records within them, along with a wider knowledge of the historical context, often allows progress to be made. Most important, John Wintrip concentrates on how to do the research on the practical steps that can be taken in order to break through these barriers. He looks at online services, archives and their catalogues, factors that can influence the outcome of research, wider family relationships, missing ancestors and mistaken identity. Throughout the book he emphasizes the process of research and the variety of resources and search tools that can be used.

Excerpt from The Society of Colonial Wars in the State of Wisconsin: List of Officers and Members, Including Pedigrees and a Record of the Services Performed by Ancestors in the Wars of the Colonies On April 26, 1897, a meeting was held in Kenosha, Wis., for the purpose of organizing a Society of Colonial Wars in the State of Wisconsin. At this meeting a letter was read from the Secretary General of the General Society of Colonial Wars, authorizing the formation of a Society of Colonial Wars in this state, and acting upon that authority a preliminary organization was effected and the Constitution of the Society of Colonial Wars in the State of Massachusetts, with one or two changes, was temporarily adopted, and officers were elected to serve until the first General Court. On July 28, 1897, the first Special Court of the Society was held in Milwaukee and Articles of Incorporation were signed, all the officers being re-elected to serve until the date of the first General Court mentioned in the Articles of Incorporation. At a meeting of the Council held in Milwaukee on October 26, 1897, the By-Laws of the Society were adopted. The first General Court of the Society was held on December 22, 1897, when officers for the ensuing year were elected. Immediately after the adjournment of the Court, the first annual dinner of the Society was held at Hotel Pfister, ten members being present and four guests of the Society. At a meeting of the Council held January 14, 1898, it was unanimously voted to publish the first Year Book of the Society. Genealogists and other historical researchers have valued the first two editions of this work, often referred to as the genealogist's bible."" The new edition continues that tradition. Intended as a handbook and a guide to selecting, locating, and using appropriate primary and secondary resources, The Source also functions as an instructional tool for novice genealogists and a refresher course for experienced researchers. More than 30 experts in this field--genealogists, historians, librarians, and archivists--prepared the 20 signed chapters, which are well written, easy to read, and include many helpful hints for getting the most out of whatever information is acquired. Each chapter ends with an extensive bibliography and is further enriched by tables, black-and-white illustrations, and examples of documents. Eight appendixes include the expected contact information for groups and institutions that persons studying genealogy and history need to find. ""
