Regulating Drinking Water Quality examines the issue of safe drinking water from both scientific and public health policy points of view. Twenty-seven chapters provide a forum in which EPA and non-EPA scientists discuss the challenges of implementing the 1986 Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) amendments. General areas covered include an update on regulating lead in drinking water, radon in drinking water, regulating for microbes and disinfection by-products, exposure assessment and drinking water contamination, risk assessment and drinking water contamination, and consumer protection from drinking water point of use systems. Drinking water professionals, environmental and engineering professionals, regulatory personnel, and legislators should consider this important new book a "must have" acquisition for their libraries. This is the third edition of the WHO's guidelines which are used by countries worldwide to set standards for the regulation of drinking water quality and effective approaches to water safety management. This revised edition has been updated to take account of recent developments in risk assessment and management. Topics discussed include: a framework for drinking water safety and discussion of the roles and responsibilities of different stakeholders, such as national regulators, water suppliers and independent surveillance agencies; guidance on microbial safety of drinking water through safety plans; new scientific information on chemicals, waterborne pathogens and individual chemical hazards of actual or potential concern. It also considers the application of the guidelines in specific circumstances, such as in emergencies and disasters, and to specific applications, such as bottled water. It also contains information on over 130 documents which substantiate or explain the content of the Guidelines, and on good practice guidance in achieving drinking-water safety.

Principles Of Water Quality written by Thomas Waite and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-02 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Principles of Water Quality presents the fundamental environmental processes that regulate the movement of materials in natural systems. This book is composed of 10 chapters that cover the chemical and microbiological processes that are operative on organic and inorganic constituents in water. This text deals first with water quality concepts, the development of criteria for water quality, and the determination of various contaminants' threshold levels that can be regulated by imposed standards. These topics are followed by descriptions of natural environmental processes, which include fundamental ecological principles and energy transfer in ecosystems resulting in species stability. The subsequent chapters are devoted to the organic and inorganic constituents that have become water quality problems, including toxic metals, inorganic nutrients, refractory organic compounds, and microorganisms. The discussion then shifts to the environmental impact of heated effluent discharges. The last three chapters focus on water quality modeling, standards, and management methods. These chapters also provide case studies using the phosphorus and the longitudinal dispersion models. This book is of value to advanced undergraduate or graduate students in environmental engineering and science, as well as in health-related disciplines.

Institutional Governance And Regulation Of Water Services written by Michael J. Rouse and has been published by IWA Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-14 with Science categories.

Institutional Governance and Regulation of Water Services aims to provide the key elements of policy, governance and regulation necessary for sustainable water and sanitation services. On policy matters, it covers important aspects including separation of policy and delivery, integrated planning, sustainable cost recovery, provisions for the poor, and transparency. Regulation and Regulatory Bodies are presented in their various forms, with discussion of why some form of independent scrutiny is essential for sustainability. The focus is on what works and what does not, based on consideration of basic principles and on case studies in both developing and developed countries. The early chapters discuss the key elements, with later chapters considering how these elements have come together in successful reforms of public sector operations. A chapter is devoted to the successful use of the private sector based on lessons learnt from ‘failures’ of private contracts and the need for the application of sound procurement principles. The current trend is for a public sector model which benefits from business approaches, the so-called corporatised public utility. Experience since the publication of the first edition in 2007 reinforces the importance of the key elements for sustainable water services. This second edition brings the material up to date and with some increased emphasis on public participation in its many forms. It refers to the opportunity for progress provided by the UN Declaration of Water and Sanitation as a Human Right, but only if it is implemented in a practical and sustainable way. Institutional Governance and Regulation of Water Services is aimed at providing an informative source for national and local governments responsible for water policy, for water utility managers, and for students who will be the policy makers of tomorrow. It is a teaching aid for courses on water policy, governance and regulation. About the Author: Michael Rouse is a Distinguished Research Associate at the University of Oxford and manages the Institutional Governance and Regulation module of the University’s MSc Course on Water Science, Policy and Management. He was formerly Head of the Drinking Water Inspectorate in London and has extensive knowledge and experience of water governance and regulation, including all aspects of audit and enforcement, and the governance issues related to both public sector management and privatisation. He has wide knowledge of water technical and operational matters, based on his applied research and development background at the Water Research Centre, where he spent 9 years as Managing Director. Michael has a good understanding of international water matters and advises governments on policy and regulation. He is a Past President of the International Water Association. He is a visiting professor at Tsinghua University in Beijing and at the Shanghai Academy of Social Science. In 2000 he was awarded the CBE (Commander of the British Empire) for his professional services.
