This book approaches the subject of contemporary art by exploring the social embeddedness and identities of Singaporean artists. Linking artistic processes and production to both personal worlds and wider issues, the book examines how artists negotiate their relationships between self and society and between artistic freedom and social responsibility. It is based on original research into the discourses and artistic practices of local artists, with a special focus on emerging artists and artists whose work and perspectives engage with questions of identity. Reimagining contemporary Singapore and their place within it, artists are asserting their multiple and heterogeneous self-identities and contesting hegemonic norms and notions, as they negotiate and adapt to the world around them. Relevant to art and cultural scholars interested in the relationships between self and society, between artistic freedom and social responsibility, this book also presents a new means of understanding contemporary Singapore and Singaporean identity through the lens of its artists. This is of interest to students and researchers of cultural studies, media studies, art, sociology of art, and race and ethnicity studies.

`If one is concerned with the future of education this book is a must. While it is humbling it is also an inspirational invitation for transformation' - Florida Journal of Educational Administration & Policy `It is clear that school leadership has had to adapt to the changing educational climate and this has required changes at all levels, as well as shifts in balance. This book addresses these challenges and demonstrates a variety of illustrative examples of how successful these changes can be. This is a useful primer for those studying leadership in schools and some of the associated theories and practice . There are wide and well-considered references across the educational and management lendscape and it provides thought-provoking views on how leadership can be practised'-ESCalate `The fact that we know you are watching, Brian, helps all of us both to perform well in the present and to invent a future in which we perform better still...I commend Brian's writings to anyone committed to world-class public education' - Professor Sir Michael Barber, Expert Partner, Global Public Sector Practice, McKinsey and Company, Former Head of Prime Minister's Delivery Unit at 10 Downing Street `In Re-imagining Educational Leadership Brian Caldwell has set an outstanding framework for school leaders and educators to fundamentally rethink schools and school leadership. The book is very perceptive and links ideas and concepts to the practical reality of schools in an inspiring and imaginative way. This is a 'must read' book for all those involved in developing inspiring leadership in our schools. This is a major contribution to the educational literature' - Professor Brent Davies, Professor of International Leadership Development at the University of Hull `Brian Caldwell has successfully brought together an analysis of past and current practice in leadership but, most significantly, he has outlined key thoughts, ideas and perspectives to inspire leaders in their personal learning journey in the future... This book will become one of the key sources of ideas for leadership in schools over the next few years. It is both accessible and thought provoking while never losing the practical relevance to schools and school leaders. This is a "must read" for all those involved in educational leadership and 21st century schooling' - International Journal of Educational Management We do not know the precise form that education will take in different settings in 25 years' time. No-one does. No-one should claim to have this foresight. Leadership is required, however, regardless of the form that education takes. In this book, Brian Caldwell draws on his work on self-managing schools, his most recent work in the UK with the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust, and on evidence from around the world, to describe how leadership is changing the world of education on a scale that can best be described as transformation. Such leadership differs in important ways from what has been expected in the past: it requires a change in role at all levels, and shifts the balance from what is often a dispiriting and discouraging experience to one that is exhilarating. The author's insight and recommendations are essential reading for all school leaders, potential school leaders and policy makers at local and national levels who seek to secure high levels of achievement for all students in all settings. About the author Brian J. Caldwell is Managing Director of Melbourne-based Educational Transformations, and Professorial Fellow at the University of Melbourne where he served as Dean of Education from 1998 to 2004. He is Associate Director-Global of International Networking for Educational Transformation, a project of the London-based Specialist Schools and Academies Trust. Brian is internationally known as an expert in educational leadership. Awards include the Gold Medal of the Australian Council of Educational Leaders, the Hedley Beare Educator of the Year Award (Victoria), and the College Medal (Australia) of the Australian College of Educators.

The Media Cultural Control And Government In Singapore written by Terence Lee and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-05-06 with History categories.

This book explores this inherent contradiction present in most facets of Singaporean media, cultural and political discourses, and identifies the key regulatory strategies and technologies that the ruling People Action Party (PAP) employs to regulate Singapore media and culture, and thus govern the thoughts and conduct of Singaporeans. It establishes the conceptual links between government and the practice of cultural policy, arguing that contemporary cultural policy in Singapore has been designed to shape citizens into accepting and participating in the rationales of government. Outlining the historical development of cultural policy, including the recent expansion of cultural regulatory and administrative practices into the ‘creative industries’, Terence Lee analyzes the attempts by the Singaporean authorities to engage with civil society, the ways in which the media is used to market the PAP’s policies and leadership and the implications of the internet for the practice of governmental control. Overall, The Media, Cultural Control and Government in Singapore offers an original approach towards the rethinking of the relationship between media, culture and politics in Singapore, demonstrating that the many contradictory discourses around Singapore only make sense once the politics and government of the media and culture are understood.

These essays are meant to initiate discussion, promote debate and broaden understanding of the social issues at play, the challenges faced, and the trade-offs involved in enhancing social policies, strengthening the social compact, and shaping the social context in Singapore. This is done through addressing issues and challenges in (1) Government and Civil Society; (2) Education; (3) Employability and Employment; (4) Social and Family Development; (5) Demographics and Social Spending; (6) Healthcare and Healthcare Financing; (7) Urban Planning and the Environment; (8) Disruptions, New Technologies and Smart Nation. It is hoped this book will be useful for students of sociology, social policy or public policy, as they discuss the dynamics and trade-offs involved in planning, shaping and implementing social and public policies in Singapore. Community Arts And Culture Initiatives In Singapore written by Zdravko Trivic and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-09-15 with Education categories.

What Can Space Do for the Arts?; What Can Arts Do for Space?; and What Can Arts and Space Do for the Community? Through the lenses of creative placemaking and neighbourhood arts ecology, Trivic re-examines the position of community arts in the spatial, social and cultural landscape. Emphasising urban design considerations of complex interdependent relationships between arts, space and people, he re-explores the role of community-based arts activities in shaping urban neighbourhoods, enriching public life and empowering communities. This is divided into an analysis of spatial opportunities for the arts in the neighbourhood; and a study of the impacts of bringing arts and culture activities into local neighbourhoods and communities, using Singapore’s nodal approach as a developed case study. Using spatial opportunity analysis, the book demonstrates a step-by-step procedure for identification and evaluation of the neighbourhood spaces that work best for community arts and culture activities. In the study of impacts, Trivic proposes a holistic framework for capturing and evaluating the non-economic impacts of arts and culture, on space, society, well-being, education and participation. An invaluable template for arts event organisers and artists to assess and maximise the outcomes of their creative efforts in local neighbourhoods, as well as an important reading for students and practitioners of neighbourhood planning, urban design, and creative placemaking.

Can Singapore Fall written by Lim Siong Guan and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-07-03 with Social Science categories.

Lim Siong Guan, Singapore's former Head of Civil Service (1999-2005) was the Institute of Policy Studies' 4th S R Nathan Fellow for the Study of Singapore. This book contains edited versions of the three IPS-Nathan Lectures he gave between September and November 2017, and highlights of his dialogue with the audience. Lim addresses the question, 'Can Singapore Fall?', by examining the state of Singapore today and proposing what Singapore and Singaporeans must do in order to prevent economic and social decline. Taking inspiration from Sir John Glubb's essay, The Fate of Empires and Search for Survival, Lim urges Singaporeans to counter decline by observing the 'three legs of honour': Trust, Diversity, and Excellence. These include becoming a gracious society and building up a culture of innovation, excellence and outwardness. Lim also reminds us that cultural change takes a generational effort to effect; for change to happen, Singaporeans must thus act with urgency and act now for the well-being of future generations. The IPS-Nathan Lectures series was launched in 2014 as part of the S R Nathan Fellowship for the Study of Singapore. The S R Nathan Fellow delivers a series of lectures during their term to advance public understanding and discussion of issues of critical national interest.
