For Japan, as one of the victorious allies, World War I meant territorial gains in China and the Pacific. At the end of the war, however, Japan discovered that in modeling itself on imperial Germany since the nineteenth century, it had perhaps been imitating the wrong national example. Japanese policy debates during World War I, particularly the clash between proponents of greater democratization and those who argued for military expansion, thus became part of the ongoing discussion of national identity among Japanese elites. This study links two sets of concerns—the focus of recent studies of the nation on language, culture, education, and race; and the emphasis of diplomatic history on international developments—to show how political, diplomatic, and cultural concerns work together to shape national identity.

House And Home In Modern Japan written by Jordan Sand and has been published by Harvard Univ Asia Center this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Architecture categories.
A house is a site, the bounds and focus of a community. It is also an artifact, a material extension of its occupants' lives. This book takes the Japanese house in both senses, as site and as artifact, and explores the spaces, commodities, and conceptions of community associated with it in the modern era. As Japan modernized, the principles that had traditionally related house and family began to break down. Even where the traditional class markers surrounding the house persisted, they became vessels for new meanings, as housing was resituated in a new nexus of relations. The house as artifact and the artifacts it housed were affected in turn. The construction and ornament of houses ceased to be stable indications of their occupants' social status, the home became a means of personal expression, and the act of dwelling was reconceived in terms of consumption. Amid the breakdown of inherited meanings and the fluidity of modern society, not only did the increased diversity of commodities lead to material elaboration of dwellings, but home itself became an object of special attention, its importance emphasized in writing, invoked in politics, and articulated in architectural design. The aim of this book is to show the features of this culture of the home as it took shape in Japan.

Why is ethics important to organizations? What are the characteristics of an ethical organization? How can we audit the ethics of an organization? What measures and activities stimulate the ethical development of organizations? This book addresses these questions. It is easier to say that ethics is necessary than to tell how to organize ethics. This book provides a fundamental and coherent vision on how ethics can be organized in a focused way. This study examines the assumptions for organizing ethics, the pitfalls and phases of such a process, the parts of an ethics audit and the great variety of measures. The methods and insights illustrated in this book are based partially on practical research. One of these methods, the Ethics Thermometer, was based on more than 150 interviews at various organizations. The Ethics Thermometer has been applied in a great variety of profit and not-for-profit organizations in order to measure an organization's perceived context, conduct and consequences. This book will be important to scholars in the field of business ethics, as well as to managers and practitioners. For scholars, this study provides general knowledge about auditing and developing the ethics of an organization. A summary is given of the criteria by which the ethical content of an organization can be measured. For managers and practitioners, this study provides concrete suggestions for safeguarding and improving ethics within their organizations.

At a time when international headlines have moved on to depict the travails of a global pandemic and the reemergence of Great Power rivalry, this introductory volume of Legacies of 9/11 and the Global War on Terror highlights the subtle ways the war on terror continues to shape our future, coursing through our social relations, political language, and engagements with technology. Ranging from conceptual reflections on ideology, religion, politics, and surveillance to case studies of nations across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, the essays have been organized into seven general categories: Muslim Networks, Counterinsurgency Strategies, Knowledge and Cultural Production, Capital Flows and Patronage Networks, Rise of Authoritarianism, Semantics and the Language of Terror, and Islamism and Internationalism. It is intended that these categories guide the reader in situating the variegated legacies of 9/11 and the Global War on Terror into more manageable areas of inquiry and exploration.

A Comparative Handbook To The Gospels Of Matthew And Luke written by Bruce D. Chilton and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-08-09 with Religion categories.
This Handbook provides any commentator — whose purposes might include writing a consecutive treatment of a Gospel, or engaging with episodic themes or passages, or preparing a particular section of the Gospel for study, teaching, or preaching — with resources from the Gospels’ Judaic environment that appear useful for understanding the texts themselves. Translation, presentation, comparison with Judaica, and occasional comments are all designed with that end in view. Materials are included from the Pseudepigrapha (together with Philo and Josephus), discoveries related to Qumran, and Rabbinic Literature (inclusive of the Targumim). As in a previous volume that dealt with Mark’s Gospel, this Comparative Handbook targets the issue of comparison more than analysis or commentary.

Bosnian Authentication Of Hadith Redefining The Criteria written by Israr Ahmad Khan and has been published by International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-01-01 with Religion categories.
In today’s complex and volatile world, the consequences of relying on fraudulent and counterfeit Hadith to legitimize extremist behavior, issue violent fatwas, and justify blatant abuse, particularly of women, is not only far too easy but in fact dangerous. Israr Khan addresses the sensitive topic of Hadith authentication, focusing on the criteria adopted by classical scholars to maintain that concentration on the continuity and accuracy of the chain of narrators, rather than the textual content of Hadith, has led to particular Hadith being included which either contradict other Hadith directly, project the Prophet (SAAS) in an uncharacteristic light, or do not reflect and/or conflict with the teachings of the Qur’an. The study traces in careful detail the historical development of the oral and written traditions, as well as the many targeted attempts at fabrication that took place, critiquing in methodical detail certain Hadith which have come to be widely accepted as “authentic.” The prominent collections we have today, were made possible by the development of the science of Hadith criticism, and Muslim scholars deserve deep appreciation for their painstaking work, as well as their invaluable contribution towards preserving the Hadith literature to the best of their ability. However, insists the author, the process is ongoing, and the closed-door policy which currently surrounds Hadith authentication needs to be carefully reexamined.

Integrated And Holistic Perspectives On Learning Instruction And Technology written by J.M. Spector and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-12-17 with Education categories.
One outcome of recent progress in educational technology is strong interest in providing effective support for learning in complex and ill-structured domains. We know how to use technology to promote understanding in simpler domains (e.g., orientation information, procedures with minimal-branching, etc.), but we are less sure how to use technology to support understanding in more complex domains (e.g., managing limited resources, understanding environmental impacts, etc.). Such domains are increasingly significant for society. Technology (e.g., collaborative tele-learning, digital repositories, interactive simulations, etc.) can provide conceptually and functionally rich domains for learning. However, this introduces the problem of determining what works in which circumstances and why. Research and development on these matters is reflected in this collection of papers. This research suggests a need to rethink foundational issues in educational philosophy and learning technology. One major theme connecting these papers is the need to address learning in the large - from a more holistic perspective. A second theme concerns the need to take learners where and as they are, integrating technology into effective learning places. Significant and systematic progress in learning support for complex domains demands further attention to these important issues.
