In light of the myriad needs in this world and the scope of God's mission, how do believers and churches determine their responsibility to others within and beyond the people of God? This thesis suggests that the answer to this question lies in a proper conception of relational responsibility. In order to determine that responsibility, I seek to develop a relational paradigm that takes into account both the relational identity of believers and the purpose of their existence in light of the mission of God. The foundation for this paradigm is the Free church eccesliology of Miroslav Volf. The other key lines of investigation are theological anthropology and mission. They are considered and then integrated with Volf's ecclesiological foundation. All three are discussed in an eschatological framework. The thesis suggests that it is part of the human vocation to live in the local church as an anticipation of the eschatological community of God's people, because that community represents the fulfilment of the imago Dei. Indeed, living in the church as an anticipation of the eschatological people of God is living as an anticipation of the fulfilment of the imago Dei. The eschatological community is a catholic community. The church's anticipation of this catholicity within history should have two dimensions, namely temporal expansion and working toward relational wholeness. It is the presence of the Spirit that includes believers in the community of God's people. Because the same Spirit is present in all believers, they share a common identity and a common mission. The reality of this common identity means that a relational responsibility exists between believers. The relational responsibility is significant because it involves seeking to image the relational life of the Trinity. This is enacted by way of the church loving as Christ loved. Yet within history there are obvious limitations to the believer's capacity for such love. In light of these limitations, two principles for the relational life of the believer are suggested. The first is to engage deeply in the particular relationships in which God places one. The second is to consistently and intentionally engage in relationships beyond one's sphere of influence.
