All education and educational scholarship occurs on Indigenous Lands. Despite this reality, U.S. social studies education and scholarship has reinforced settler colonialism through curricula, teacher education, professional development, policy research, and more. To confront settler colonial social studies and transform the field, educators and scholars must engage relational approaches, prioritize community and student expertise, and commit to action that recognizes Indigenous Ways of Knowing. This book brings together Indigenous and non-Indigenous scholars, practitioners, and community partners from across the U.S. to share experiences of, stories about, and hopes for anti-colonial social studies. By sharing these examples, the book also provides methodological guidance for researchers, teacher educators, curriculum developers, and policymakers looking to learn about scholarly processes and partnerships with Indigenous communities. In addition to individual chapters, contributors engaged in conversations and collaboration between chapters and about the book as a whole. In Riotous Deathscapes, Hugo ka Canham presents an understanding of life and death based on indigenous and black ways of knowing that he terms Mpondo theory. Focusing on amaMpondo people from rural Mpondoland, in South Africa’s Eastern Cape, Canham outlines the methodologies that have enabled the community’s resilience and survival. He assembles historical events and a cast of ancestral and living characters, following the tenor of village life, to offer a portrait of how Mpondo people live and die in the face of centuries of abandonment, trauma, antiblackness, and death. Canham shows that Mpondo theory is grounded in and develops in relation to the natural world, where the river and hill are key sites of being and resistance. Central too, is the interface between ancestors and the living, in which life and death become a continuity and a boundlessness that white supremacy and neoliberalism cannot interdict. Socioecological Transformations confronts dominant framings of transformation that either remain apolitical and ahistorical, or overemphasizes the structural causes, while bypassing the ontological roots of the present-day socioecological violence and destruction. It challenges the technocratic and structuralist tendencies that either reduce transformation to policy tweaks, or to social movements and activism. This volume reclaims socioecological transformations as a radical, justice-centred theory-praxis. By connecting the structural and the ontological roots of the colonial-racial-capitalist system of oppression, the book exposes how materialist-dualist ontology and associated worldviews uphold hierarchies of worth, which in turn serve and uphold the colonial-racial-capitalist system of oppression. In doing so, it widens the spectrum of viable responses to include in addition to social movements and activism, those that unsettle the ontological bases of our socioecological calamities—the human exceptionalism and the illusion of separation. The fifteen chapters span diverse geographies, struggles, and approaches, weaving together onto-epistemic inquiry with grounded transformative practices, movements and action. The contributions share the common focus on justice as both motivation and a guiding principle for transformations. The book calls for transformation where being, knowing, and doing are reimagined in relational, life-affirming terms. A vital resource for students, academics, activists inspired by political ecology, feminist studies, decolonial and relational approaches, social movements, and transformations, but also practitioners and policy actors seeking to engage transformation beyond surface-level solutions.
