Introduces applied mathematicians and graduate students to an original relaxation method based on a continuous extension of various optimization problems relating to convex compactification; it can be applied to problems in optimal control theory, the calculus of variations, and non-cooperative game theory. Reviews the background and summarizes the general theory of convex compactifications, then uses it to obtain convex, locally compact envelopes of the Lebesague and Sobolev spaces involved in concrete problems. The nontrivial envelopes cover the classical Young measures as well as various generalizations of them, which can record the limit behavior of fast oscillation and concentration effects. The relaxation method has enjoyed an intensive development during many decades and this new edition of this comprehensive text reflects in particular the main achievements in the past 20 years. Moreover, many further improvements and extensions are included, both in the direction of optimal control and optimal design as well as in numerics and applications in materials science, along with an updated treatment of the abstract parts of the theory.

The calculus of variations is a classical area of mathematical analysis-300 years old-yet its myriad applications in science and technology continue to hold great interest and keep it an active area of research. These two volumes contain the referenced proceedings of the international conference on Calculus of Variations and Related Topics held at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in March 1998. The conference commemorated 300 years of work in the field and brought together many of its leading experts. The papers in the first volume focus on critical point theory and differential equations. The other volume deals with variational aspects of optimal control. Together they provide a unique opportunity to review the state-of-the-art of the calculus of variations, as presented by an international panel of masters in the field.

Convex Functional Analysis written by Andrew J. Kurdila and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-03-30 with Science categories.
This volume is dedicated to the fundamentals of convex functional analysis. It presents those aspects of functional analysis that are extensively used in various applications to mechanics and control theory. The purpose of the text is essentially two-fold. On the one hand, a bare minimum of the theory required to understand the principles of functional, convex and set-valued analysis is presented. Numerous examples and diagrams provide as intuitive an explanation of the principles as possible. On the other hand, the volume is largely self-contained. Those with a background in graduate mathematics will find a concise summary of all main definitions and theorems.

Infinite Dimensional Linear Control Systems written by and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-07-12 with Mathematics categories.
For more than forty years, the equation y'(t) = Ay(t) + u(t) in Banach spaces has been used as model for optimal control processes described by partial differential equations, in particular heat and diffusion processes. Many of the outstanding open problems, however, have remained open until recently, and some have never been solved. This book is a survey of all results know to the author, with emphasis on very recent results (1999 to date). The book is restricted to linear equations and two particular problems (the time optimal problem, the norm optimal problem) which results in a more focused and concrete treatment. As experience shows, results on linear equations are the basis for the treatment of their semilinear counterparts, and techniques for the time and norm optimal problems can often be generalized to more general cost functionals. The main object of this book is to be a state-of-the-art monograph on the theory of the time and norm optimal controls for y'(t) = Ay(t) + u(t) that ends at the very latest frontier of research, with open problems and indications for future research.Key features:· Applications to optimal diffusion processes.· Applications to optimal heat propagation processes.· Modelling of optimal processes governed by partial differential equations.· Complete bibliography.· Includes the latest research on the subject.· Does not assume anything from the reader except basic functional analysis.· Accessible to researchers and advanced graduate students alike· Applications to optimal diffusion processes.· Applications to optimal heat propagation processes.· Modelling of optimal processes governed by partial differential equations.· Complete bibliography.· Includes the latest research on the subject.· Does not assume anything from the reader except basic functional analysis.· Accessible to researchers and advanced graduate students alike

Rate Independent Systems written by Alexander Mielke and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-10-21 with Mathematics categories.
This monograph provides both an introduction to and a thorough exposition of the theory of rate-independent systems, which the authors have been working on with a lot of collaborators over 15 years. The focus is mostly on fully rate-independent systems, first on an abstract level either with or even without a linear structure, discussing various concepts of solutions with full mathematical rigor. Then, usefulness of the abstract concepts is demonstrated on the level of various applications primarily in continuum mechanics of solids, including suitable approximation strategies with guaranteed numerical stability and convergence. Particular applications concern inelastic processes such as plasticity, damage, phase transformations, or adhesive-type contacts both at small strains and at finite strains. A few other physical systems, e.g. magnetic or ferroelectric materials, and couplings to rate-dependent thermodynamic models are considered as well. Selected applications are accompanied by numerical simulations illustrating both the models and the efficiency of computational algorithms. In this book, the mathematical framework for a rigorous mathematical treatment of "rate-independent systems" is presented in a comprehensive form for the first time. Researchers and graduate students in applied mathematics, engineering, and computational physics will find this timely and well written book useful.

Analysis And Computation Of Microstructure In Finite Plasticity written by Sergio Conti and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-04-23 with Science categories.
This book addresses the need for a fundamental understanding of the physical origin, the mathematical behavior and the numerical treatment of models which include microstructure. Leading scientists present their efforts involving mathematical analysis, numerical analysis, computational mechanics, material modelling and experiment. The mathematical analyses are based on methods from the calculus of variations, while in the numerical implementation global optimization algorithms play a central role. The modeling covers all length scales, from the atomic structure up to macroscopic samples. The development of the models ware guided by experiments on single and polycrystals and results will be checked against experimental data.
