Knowledge And Belief written by Frederick F. Schmitt and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-11-22 with Philosophy categories.

Knowledge, from Plato onwards, has been considered in relation to justified belief. Current debate has centred around the nature of the justification and whether justified belief can be considered an internal or extenal matter. Epistemological internalists argue that the subject must be able to reflect upon a belief to complete the process of justification. The externalists, on the other hand, claim that it is only necessary to consider whether the belief is reliably formed, and argue that the ability to know by reflection is not required for a justified belief. In the historical section of this book the three most important epistemologists, Plato, Descartes and Hume, as well as the ancient epistemologies of the stoics, Academics and Pyrhonians, are considered. In reconsidering the history of epistemology the author is led to argue against hte view that internalism is historically dominant. His critique of internalism is then developed into a sustained argument against many of its forms, and he goes onto defend an externalist, reliabilist epistemology.

Thomas Reid And Scepticism written by Philip De Bary and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-01-14 with Philosophy categories.

This book bears witness to the current reawakening of interest in Reid's philosophy. It first examines Reid's negative attack on the Way of Ideas, and finds him to be a devastating critic of his predecessors. Turning to the positive part of Reid's programme, the author then develops a fresh interpretation of Reid as an anticipator of present-day 'reliabilism'. Throughout the book, Reid is presented as a powerful thinker with much to say to philosophers in the twenty-first century. The book will be of interest not only to Reid scholars and historians of philosophy, but also to specialists and students in contemporary epistemology.

Structural Reliabilism written by P. Kawalec and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Philosophy categories.

Kawalec's monograph is a novel defence of the programme of inductive logic, developed initially by Rudolf Carnap in the 1950s and Jaakko Hintikka in the 1960s. It revives inductive logic by bringing out the underlying epistemology. The main strength of the work is its link between inductive logic and contemporary discussions of epistemology. Through this perspective the author succeeds to shed new light on the significance of inductive logic. The resulting structural reliabilist theory propounds the view that justification supervenes on syntactic and semantic properties of sentences as justification-bearers. The claim is made that this sets up a genuine alternative to the prevailing theories of justification. Kawalec substantiates this claim by confronting structural reliabilism with a number of epistemological problems. Kawalec writes in a clear manner, makes his theses and arguments explicit, and gives ample bibliographical references.

Since the time of Plato's Theatetus, philosophers such as Plato's Socrates have asked the question: what is propositional knowledge? Merely believing something is insufficient for knowledge because anyone can believe anything without any further stipulations than that the subject accepts the belief. Even if the beliefs in question are true, knowledge still seems to require more than a simple approximation to truth by an accepted belief. Plato's solution to this problem was to develop three conditions for the transmission of belief into knowledge: justification, truth, and belief. Since Plato, a number of thinkers have developed critiques of this paradigm that account for different criticisms of it. I build on the work of a contemporary epistemologist named Alvin Goldman who in his seminal work Epistemology and Cognition developed a radical new concept of justification called process reliabilism. Process reliabilism claims that S knows that p only if S's belief in p results from a reliable belief-forming cognitive process. As a result of this work, a debate sparked in contemporary analytic epistemology between what are traditionally called the internalists and the externalists. Internalists claim that the determiners of justification must be internal to the epistemic agent, whereas externalists claim that external reliability is the sole determiner of justification. In the second chapter of this work, I provide an analysis of this debate and subsequently argue for the externalist position against a number of contemporary thinkers who seek to collapse the distinction. In the final section of this thesis, I incorporate research from experimental cognitive psychology and neuroscience to update the research cited by Goldman in Epistemology and Cognition.
