The tragedy of December 1st is still fresh in the minds of Sam, Nathan, and Trent. As Sam adjusts to his new life of becoming a father after losing his own to Nergal, he does not know there will be no respite for him or his friends. They believe their ordeal, which started in Talihina, Oklahoma, two years earlier, was over, and they had realized their triumph over Nergal and his grip on Southeastern Oklahoma. With the deaths of the Choctaw elders, Addison, and Joshua, came a loss of wisdom and foresight into the true nature of their enemy. Nergal had established his dominion over the area thousands of years before the first nations people migrated in and began establishing their civilizations in the area. He would not give it up now, especially now that these humans were in possession of a prized relic of his. The mysterious obelisk the men had manipulated to their advantage in the hills of Honobia was recovered from the smoldering wreckage of the helicopter that had become Paul Eastman's funeral pyre. Nathan and Trent alerted their commander, General Malcolm Henderson, to the relic and its mysterious properties. After an inspection by a Department of Defense physicist, the General knows of only one man who might have insight into the unique qualities of the relic. To their surprise, the obelisk had survived the inferno and seemed to repair itself. Eben Maqor, a hyperintelligent polymath with his feet planted firmly in two of the world's most renowned intelligence agencies, is called to investigate the object. Immediately recognizing the exotic nature and properties of the object, Maqor has the object moved to the laboratory of an enigmatic aerospace tycoon who has been missing for two years. Under the scrutiny of the tycoon's daughter and an ex-WWII German fighter pilot, the object's true nature and its relevance to another ancient relic also become known. Maqor knows the object's significance to Nergal and that the fallen angel will not rest until he recovers the obelisk. Realizing the danger posed to the men who recovered it and that the dizzying coincidences occurring, such as Trent's past romance with Jenna Weston, the daughter of the missing tycoon, are not coincidences at all. They are merely the residue of battles fought thousands of years earlier between God and his rebellious creations. He knows Nergal, one of the most rebellious of the fallen, will use every weapon available to retrieve what he sees as his property. For Sam, there will be no rest between battles, no time to mourn his losses or celebrate his new son. As for Nathan and Trent, what they thought was a victory was, in fact, merely an opening maneuver. It will force them to battle new menaces. The most dangerous will come from institutions they should be able to trust, Congress, and the Pentagon. These human enemies will ultimately kill them and ruin their names and reputations if they cannot figure out a way to counter them, but before they can do anything to save themselves from their government. They must defeat Nergal and his creatures inside his "Lair of the Ancients."

The Holy Blood written by Nicholas Vincent and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-12-13 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

The first extended study of relics of the Holy Blood: portions of the blood of Christ's passion preserved supposedly from the time of the Crucifixion and displayed as objects of wonder and veneration in the churches of medieval Europe. Inspired by the discovery of new evidence relating to the relic deposited by King Henry III at Westminster in 1247, the study proceeds from the particular political and spiritual motives that inspired this gift to a wider consideration of blood relics, their distribution across western Europe, their place in Christian devotion, and the controversies to which they gave rise among theologians. In the process the author advances a new thesis on the role of the sacred in Plantagenet court life as well as exploring various intriguing byways of medieval religion.

Relics Of The Christ written by Joe Nickell and has been published by University Press of Kentucky this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-03-16 with Religion categories.

Religious relics, defined as "either portions of or objects connected with the body of a saint or other holy person," are among the most revered items in the world. Christian relics such as the Holy Grail, the True Cross, and the Lance of Longinus are also the source of limitless controversy. Such items have incited people to bloodshed and, some say, have been a source of miracles. Relics inspire fear and hope among the faithful and yet are a perennial target for skeptics, both secular and Christian. To research the authenticity of numerous Christian relics, Joe Nickell takes a scientific approach to a field of study all too often tainted by premature conclusions. In this volume, Nickell investigates such renowned relics as the Shroud of Turin, the multiple heads of John the Baptist, and the supposedly incorruptible corpses of saints, first examining the available evidence and documented history of each item. From accounts of true believers to the testimony of the relics' alleged fabricators, Nickell then presents all sides of each story, allowing the evidence to speak for itself. For each relic, Nickell evaluates both the corroborating and contradictory bodies of evidence and explores whether the relic and attributed miracles can be reconstructed. In addition to his own experiments, Nickell presents findings from the world's top scientists and historians regarding these controversial objects of reverence and ire, explaining the circumstances under which each case was examined. Radiocarbon dating and tests to determine the validity of substances such as blood or patina indicate a variety of possible origins. Nickell even reveals some of the techniques used to create archaeological forgeries and explains how investigators have exposed them. Each relic is a mystery to be solved; guided by the maxim, "extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof," Nickell seeks only the truth.

Relics Prayer And Politics In Medieval Venetia written by Thomas E. A. Dale and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997 with Art categories.

Against a historical backdrop of relic theft and propaganda campaigns waged by two cities vying for patriarchal authority in medieval Venetia, Thomas Dale shows how Romanesque mural painting shaped sacred space and institutional identity. His focus is on the late twelfth-century murals in the crypt of Aquileia Cathedral. The crypt, which contains the relics of Aquileia's founding bishop, Saint Hermagoras, has a historical significance rooted in a legend identifying the saint as a direct disciple of Saint Mark the Evangelist. On this basis, the Carolingians promoted the city's status as patriarchal see of Venetia--a claim that prompted Venice to steal Mark's relics from Alexandria, Egypt, and appropriate Aquileia's history. This book, the first English-language study of the crypt, explores how the paintings complement the relics of Hermagoras in their distinct devotional and political roles. Hermagoras's intercessory power is activated by his orant image displayed over the central aisle within a larger hierarchy of apostles, martyrs, and bishops. The surrounding hagiographic cycle justifies in legalistic fashion Aquileia's patriarchal title and the consecration of the city as locus sanctus of Venetia by the blood of its martyrs. The iconic images in the eastern lunettes present the Virgin's compassio as a pictorial model for the vicarious experience of Christ's Passion. Finally, a fictive curtain over the socle presents allegories of spiritual warfare in the form of exempla from crusades, pilgrimage, and the epic poem Psychomachia, which Dale analyzes as a gloss on the main program.

Public Uses Of Human Remains And Relics In History written by Silvia Cavicchioli and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-11-08 with History categories.

The principal theme of this volume is the importance of the public use of human remains in a historical perspective. The book presents a series of case studies aimed at offering historiographical and methodological reflections and providing interpretative approaches highlighting how, through the ages and with a succession of complex practices and uses, human remains have been imbued with a plurality of meanings. Covering a period running from late antiquity to the present day, the contributions are the combined results of multidisciplinary research pertaining to the realities of the Italian peninsula, hitherto not investigated with a long-term and multidisciplinary historical perspective. From the relics of great men to the remains of patriots, and from anatomical specimens to the skeletons of the saints: through these case studies the scholars involved have investigated a wide range of human remains (real or reputed) and of meanings attributed to them, in order to decipher their function over the centuries. In doing so, they have traversed the interpretative boundaries of political history, religious history and the history of science, as required by questions aimed at integrating the anthropological, social and cultural aspects of a complex subject.
