Relics of the Past tells the story of antiquities collecting, antiquarianism, and archaeology in Peru and Chile in the second half of the nineteenth and the early twentieth century. While the role of foreign travellers and scholars dedicated to the study of South America's pre-Columbian past is well documented, historians have largely overlooked the knowledge gathered and the collections formed among collectors of antiquities, antiquaries, and archaeologists born or living in South America during this period. The landed gentry, the clergy, and an urban bourgeoisie of doctors, engineers, and military officials put antiquities on display in their private mansions or bestowed them upon the public museums that were being formed by municipalities and governments in Santiago de Chile, Cuzco, or Lima. Men, and some few women, gathered antiquities on their journeys 'inland' and during sociable weekend excursions, but also on quotidian commercial voyages or in military campaigns. They bartered antiquities with their fellow collectors or haggled about their price on the antiquities market. In their hours of leisure, they marvelled at them, wrote about them, and disputed over their meaning, age, and interest in learned societies, informal gatherings, and at meetings in universities and public museums. This volume unveils a hitherto largely unknown world of antiquarian and archaeological collecting and learning in Peru and Chile.

A piece of Plymouth Rock. A lock of George Washington’s hair. Wood from the cabin where Abraham Lincoln was born. Various bits and pieces of the past—often called “association items”—may appear to be eccentric odds and ends, but they are valued because of their connections to prominent people and events in American history. Kept in museum collections large and small across the United States, such objects are the touchstones of our popular engagement with history. In Sacred Relics, Teresa Barnett explores the history of private collections of items like these, illuminating how Americans view the past. She traces the relic-collecting tradition back to eighteenth-century England, then on to articles belonging to the founding fathers and through the mass collecting of artifacts that followed the Civil War. Ultimately, Barnett shows how we can trace our own historical collecting from the nineteenth century’s assemblages of the material possessions of great men and women.

"90 religious objects, icons and vestments used to track the history of Christian populations in the Ottoman Empire. The treaty signed in 1923 between Greece and Turkey provides for the transfer of personal property by community members of both communities. In the case of Greek Christian populations of Asia Minor (Anatolia), Bridge (Black Sea) and Eastern Thrace, the property consisted of religious objects in silver, embroidery, icons, manuscripts and [liturgical] books, which formed the content of the sacristy in churches and monasteries. In a pre-modern society based on religious differentiation, church treasuries are also stories of local history and collective memory. The contribution of Constantinople/Istanbul is evident in the production and distribution of art. In the seventeenth century the Ottoman capital is exposed to the artistic currents of Western Europe. For the Christian populations of the empire, the lines of communication with the West also pass through Venice and the large Greek community there. Ecclesiastical silverware and other luxurious items also went[;] religious workshops provide the capital to close or remote communities of the empire. Relics Of The Buddha written by John S. Strong and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-06-05 with Religion categories.

Buddhism is popularly seen as a religion stressing the truth of impermanence. How, then, to account for the long-standing veneration, in Asian Buddhist communities, of bone fragments, hair, teeth, and other bodily bits said to come from the historic Buddha? Early European and American scholars of religion, influenced by a characteristic Protestant bias against relic worship, declared such practices to be superstitious and fraudulent, and far from the true essence of Buddhism. John Strong's book, by contrast, argues that relic veneration has played a serious and integral role in Buddhist traditions in South and Southeast Asia-and that it is in no way foreign to Buddhism. The book is structured around the life story of the Buddha, starting with traditions about relics of previous buddhas and relics from the past lives of the Buddha Sakyamuni. It then considers the death of the Buddha, the collection of his bodily relics after his cremation, and stories of their spread to different parts of Asia. The book ends with a consideration of the legend of the future parinirvana (extinction) of the relics prior to the advent of the next Buddha, Maitreya. Throughout, the author does not hesitate to explore the many versions of these legends and to relate them to their ritual, doctrinal, artistic, and social contexts.

The world is divided by five dragon flights, each headed by a powerful and ancient dragon. People are born, live, and die to the land that each dragon rules. Then, a small band of adventurers, venture into a foreign dragon's land to rescue an arcane elven wizard from slavery. Rescuing her was the easy part. Getting her spell book, the main source of her arcane knowledge, takes going through monsters, hostile and paranoid beings, and the undead, but that is only half the problem. Their unlikely guide, an ill-tempered, ice-inflicted kobold is their best chance to get through without the dragons discovering them. But everyone knows, kobolds are the dragons most loyal servants. Or are they?
