Die eigentliche Herausforderung der Kirche im Blick auf ihre Bildungsverantwortung und ihr pädagogisches Handeln ist die religiöse und weltanschauliche Pluralität, die gerade auch in der Schule in den letzten zwanzig Jahren erheblich zugenommen hat. In der Grundschule haben bald ein Drittel der Schülerinnen und Schüler einen Migrationshintergrund. In dieser Situation hat die Schule die Aufgabe, sowohl die je eigene Identität wie das Gemeinsame inmitten des Differenten zu stärken. Schülerinnen und Schüler sollen befähigt werden, in einer pluralen Gesellschaft in gegenseitigem Respekt und friedlich zusammenzuleben. Dazu kann der Religionsunterricht einen entscheidenden Beitrag leisten. Die vorliegende Denkschrift benennt die veränderten Bedingungen und Herausforderungen religiös-weltanschaulicher Pluralität in der Schule und zeigt Entwicklungslinien auf, denen gefolgt werden muss, wenn der Religionsunterricht als ordentliches Lehrfach auch noch in zwanzig Jahren Teil des schulischen Fächerkanons sein soll.

The concept of religiosity is a highly individual aspect of religion. The understanding of it was shaped in Protestant circles in the Western context and it has inspired a huge body of research and further developments in theology, as well as in religious education. However, both charismatic movements within Christianity and orthopractic religious traditions such as Islam raise the question of whether an individualized account of religiosity is able to grasp the spectrum of lived religion comprehensively. Furthermore, with increasing globalization, even Asian worldviews like Hinduism or Buddhism are part of daily experience and have expanded the notion of what can be perceived of as religion. These changes were discussed at the international conference ‘Religiosity in East and West: Conceptual and Methodological Challenges’ at the University of Münster, Germany, from 25 to 27 June 2019. Religious Education in schools in Europe is facing societal and cultural diversity. It has become a key issue how to handle diversity adequately in the classroom. Religious Education and diversity are also the background of an Erasmus+ project of teacher training institutions (READY) in five European countries: Austria, Germany, England, Scotland, and Sweden (2016-2018). The book contains contributions from READY, a European project on teacher training in Religious Education. Experts and student teachers worked together on issues of diversity in classrooms of different European countries. Outcomes of the project include guidelines for study visits and online communication, case studies on Religions Education in the participating countries, contributions from national and international multiplier events and academic insights into the project.
