Especially with the advent of social media, the Internet in China has become the closest thing that China has to a public squarea place where ordinary people can express their ideas and opinions. China has been a multi-religion country since the ancient times. It is well known that Confucianism is an indigenous religion and is the soul of Chinese culture, which enjoyed popular support among people and even became the guiding ideology for feudalism society, but it did not develop into a national belief. It makes the culture more tolerant to others, thus, many other religions have been brought into the country in different dynasties, but none of them developed powerful enough in the history and they only provide diverse people more spiritual support. Religion and the Media in China examines whether religion contributes to the development of civil society in China. It examines how the global interconnectedness of the Internet influences the religion in China and the diaspora, in terms of how they communicate their faith, build their communities and mobilize for their causes. Electronic media has enabled wider circulation of religious symbols and discourses across a range of social fields, which tends to move religion out of the differentiated religious sphere to which it is notionally confined in liberal versions of modernity and into various contested public spheres. The paper discusses whether online social media allows Chinese Christians in the mainland and overseas to engage in religious and socio-political discourses in the same space, and if boundaries between the social and political domains established by the modern secular Chinese state are constantly being blurred and transcended in the process. The Book examines whether the potential blurring of boundaries between the religious and the socio-political in the online practice of religious notions to mobilize themselves in respond to socio-political issues, and hence becoming actors in, and contribute to, the development of civil society in China. This book explores how, unlike in the West, the daily religious life of most Chinese people spreads without institutional propagation. Based upon more than a decade of field research in rural China, the book demonstrates the decisive role of rites of passage and yearly festival rituals held in every household in shaping people’s religious dispositions. It focuses on the family, the unit most central to Chinese culture and society, and reveals the repertoire embodied in daily life in a world envisioned as comprising both the “yin” world of ancestors, spirits, and ghosts, and the “yang” world of the living. It discusses especially the concept of bai, which refers to both concrete bodily movements that express respect and awe, such as bowing, kneeling, or holding up ritual offerings, and to people’s religious inclinations and dispositions, which indicate that they are aware of a spiritual realm that is separate from yet close to the world of the living. Overall, the book shows that the daily practices of religion are not a separate sphere, but rather belief and ritual integrated into a way of dwelling in a world envisaged as consisting of both the “yin” and the “yang” worlds that regularly communicate with each other.

This collection examines the impact of East Asian religion and culture on the public sphere, defined as an idealized discursive arena that mediates the official and private spheres. Contending that the actors and agents on the fringes of society were instrumental in shaping the public sphere in traditional and modern East Asia, it considers how these outliers contribute to religious, intellectual, and cultural dialog in the public sphere. Jürgen Habermas conceptualized the public sphere as the discursive arena which grew within Western European bourgeoisie society, arguably overlooking topics such as gender, minorities, and non-European civilizations, as well as the extent to which agency in the public sphere is effective in non-Western societies and how practitioners on the outskirts of mainstream society can participate.
