Honorable Mention, 2019 Barbara T. Christian Literary Award, given by the Caribbean Studies Association Winner, 2017 Clifford Geertz Prize in the Anthropology of Religion, presented by the Society for the Anthropology of Religion section of the American Anthropological Association Finalist, 2017 Albert J. Raboteau Prize for the Best Book in Africana Religions presented by the Journal of Africana Religions An examination of the religious importance of food among Caribbean and Latin American communities Before honey can be offered to the Afro-Cuban deity Ochún, it must be tasted, to prove to her that it is good. In African-inspired religions throughout the Caribbean, Latin America, and the United States, such gestures instill the attitudes that turn participants into practitioners. Acquiring deep knowledge of the diets of the gods and ancestors constructs adherents’ identities; to learn to fix the gods’ favorite dishes is to be “seasoned” into their service. In this innovative work, Elizabeth Pérez reveals how seemingly trivial "micropractices" such as the preparation of sacred foods, are complex rituals in their own right. Drawing on years of ethnographic research in Chicago among practitioners of Lucumí, the transnational tradition popularly known as Santería, Pérez focuses on the behind-the-scenes work of the primarily women and gay men responsible for feeding the gods. She reveals how cooking and talking around the kitchen table have played vital socializing roles in Black Atlantic religions. Entering the world of divine desires and the varied flavors that speak to them, this volume takes a fresh approach to the anthropology of religion. Its richly textured portrait of a predominantly African-American Lucumí community reconceptualizes race, gender, sexuality, and affect in the formation of religious identity, proposing that every religion coalesces and sustains itself through its own secret recipe of micropractices.

Heaven S Kitchen written by Courtney Bender and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-05 with Religion categories.

How do people practice religion in their everyday lives? How do our daily encounters with people who hold different religious beliefs shape the way we understand our own moral and spiritual selves? In Heaven's Kitchen, Courtney Bender takes a highly original approach to answering these questions. For more than a year she worked in New York City as a volunteer for a nonprofit, nonreligious organization called God's Love We Deliver, helping to prepare home-cooked meals for people with AIDS. Paying close attention to what was said and not said, Bender traces how the volunteers gave voice to their moral positions and religious values. She also examines how they invested their conversations, and mundane activities such as cooking, with personal meaning that in turn affected how they saw their own spiritual lives. Filled with vibrant storytelling and rich theoretical insights, Heaven's Kitchen shows faith as a living practice, reshaping our understanding of the role of religion in contemporary American life.

"Eyes of a Chef" is not a cookbook. You won't find any recipes between its pages. What you will find is a look at Christ and the dynamic themes of Christianity through the lens of cookery and the kitchen. The book is more of a devotional than topical in nature. The book takes you on a parabolic journey where culinary tales and life experiences reflect the dynamic truth of Scripture. It is a journey into the realm of the culinary arts with our eyes turned upward, towards Christ and His kingdom. It is a look at Christ as well as creation. It is a buffet table full of little morsels, chapters to cause you to ponder upon the richness of all that Christ is, as seen through the eyes of a Chef. Each chapter is named after a Biblical concept or theme with the subtitle pointing to the culinary lens that illustrates that truth. Dive in and enjoy. I pray that the Lord will bless you as you sift through the issues of life.

Exploring the meaning of a Buddhist story, this book is a testimony of faith in the urgent relevance of India's spiritual traditions to the future of life on Earth, and it is an inquiry into the meaning of some central notions of these traditions. The value of spiritual traditions and of life itself is at stake here. In the Introduction, Ramchandra Gandhi raises the Ayodhya issue to international and universal levels. In the text, he offers a solution on the local and national levels. The temple mound in Ayodhya --the sacred hill on which the present Babri Masjid was built, also known as "Sita's Kitchen"--was originally a sacred place of the Adivasis (the aboriginal inhabitants of the subcontinent). It was sacred to the Goddess, the great nurturing earth, the fecund source of all life, the aboriginal presupposition of all later religions. As an aboriginal place sacred to the Mother Goddess, the hill in Ayodhya brings together all religions. Rather than a source of conflict, Ayodhya should become a meeting ground for the divergent religious traditions of the world to see their ultimate harmony. In the Buddhist story, the principal female character is an adivasi named Ananya ("not other"). The opposing sides come to see their oneness in Ananya. The frame-story is taken from the Vinaya-pitaka of the Pali Canon. It is the Bhaddavaggiyavatthu or "The Story of the Group of Well-Off Ones."

The Old Testament is a violent, bloody book, but the more we modern Christians neglect it, the more our gospel loses its teeth. This little book will call you out, cut you up, lift you up, and set you on fire. It begins where all spiritual meat does: not at the dinner table, not in the kitchen, nor even at the market. It begins in the abattoir. The God of the Old Testament is a butcher only because the Christ of the New Testament is a chef. Real theology deals with food, with milk and honey, flesh and blood, bread, oil, and wine. It is nourishment for children, wisdom for kings, and courage for prophets. God gave us food to teach us about life and death. God gave us sacrifice to teach us about death and resurrection. We prepare food for ourselves as God prepares us for Himself. The culinary art is close to the heart of the God who is a consuming fire.

Israeli cuisine is a mixture of tastes brought from all four sides of the world, combined with the Levantine traditions. Through centuries of life in the Diaspora, Jewish cooks were influenced by traditions and laws of countries in which they lived. Either positively—by sharing the cooking traditions, thus assimilating and transforming some dishes and creating gems like blintzes, bagels or shakshouka—or negatively—by being limited to using only cheaper and unpopular ingredients. This sparked new traditions and culinary customs which eventually become incorporated in local traditional cuisines becoming elements without which those cuisines are unimaginable to people, such as using tomatoes in the Italian cuisine. Through centuries Jews carried flavors from the East to the North, then to the South and onward to the West. Along the way collecting and creating new ones. When these flavors returned to their ancient homeland it was met by new traditions of Levantine cuisines, where it created the mixture of traditions, which can be called Israeli cuisine. Jewish cuisine is influenced also by specific dietary laws and tradition of commemorating Biblical events through dishes and sweets, which gives them distinctive characteristic from other cuisines. That’s why we bring you 40 recipes from Israeli cuisine which show all of the influences on its creation. Make them with joy in your heart because they will bring you great pleasure.

God reaches out to where you are. He isnt cooped up in church, glued to the pews, detached from what matters most to you. Hes bustling through your crowded schedule, flagging you down, waving until you take notice and give pause. He speaks even while youre in the middle of a vegetable-slicing, dinner-prepping, multi-tasking moment. The God who is interested in your comings and goings, weaves through your routines to grab your attention. He has invaded your kitchen space and is cooking up a feast for you. Whats on the menu? Generous helpings of love and mercy, seasoned to perfection with His grace. Hes ready to serve you a platter of patience and integrity, but not until theyre roasted through suffering. He has bowls of sweet comfort for the grief-stricken and stillness for the frazzled. God is in the Kitchen invites you to a serendipitous discovery to broaden your awareness of Gods not-so-hidden intervention in the ordinary. Dont watch out for big miracles alone. God peppers even the most drab, yawn-inducing day with little surprises. You only need eyes of faith to spot them. God is busy in the kitchen. Guess what Hes whipping up for you?
