Bei diesem Band handelt es sich um die erste zusammenfassende Darstellung zu Qualität und Qualitätsentwicklung im Religionsunterricht. Er nimmt damit die in fast allen Bundesländern derzeit aktuelle Umstellung von Qualitätsentwicklung sowie der Aus- und Fortbildung im Sinne empiriebasierter Verfahren auf und stellt die dafür erforderlichen wissenschaftlichen Grundlagen bereit. Der Band widmet sich drei großen essenziellen Fragen: Welche Kriterien sind für »guten Religionsunterricht« entscheidend? Wie lässt sich Qualität im Religionsunterricht erfassen und beurteilen? Wie lässt sich Qualität im Religionsunterricht weiterentwickeln? Die Abfolge dieser drei Themenkomplexe folgt damit einem leicht nachvollziehbaren Aufbauverhältnis: Von Qualität kann nur gesprochen werden, wenn Rechenschaft über die Kriterien gegeben wird, anhand derer Qualität bestimmt werden soll. Auf dieser Grundlage können dann die unterschiedlichen Ansätze religionspädagogischer Unterrichtsforschung sowie deren Ergebnisse dargestellt werden, um auf diese Weise in Möglichkeiten der Wahrnehmung und Beurteilung der Qualität von Religionsunterricht einzuführen. Am Ende entscheidend ist aber der dritte Schritt, der nach Möglichkeiten der Qualitätsentwicklung fragt.
