Und mit Recht ist neuerdings wieder von einem Theologen wie Troltsch darauf hingewiesen (die Bedeutung der Geschichtlichkeit Jesu für den Glauben, Tubingen dass hinter dem allen, sei's bewusst oder unbewusst, die alte Theorie von der Erbsünde oder der uranfänglichen "vergiftung des Menschengeschlechts laure, derzufolge dieses Menschengeschlecht den Weg zu Gott und zu religiös sittlicher Vollendung nicht finden könne ohne einen schöpferischen Eingriff von oben her in der Person Jesu von Nazareth. Tröltsch hebt mit vollem Recht hervor, dass ein Aus spruch wie derjenige Herrmanns ohne Christus ware ich Atheist auf den Ursprung aller dieser theologischen Versuche in der Erbsündenlehre hinweise. Nun ist freilich jener Ausdruck von seinem Urheber selbst zurückgenommen oder erheblich einge schränkt. Man 'wird aber doch nicht verkennen können, dass hier eine Stimmung auf eine klare Formulierung gebracht ist, die tatsächlich in den Herrmann'schen immer wiederholten Aus führungen über die Bedeutung der Person Jesu zum mindesten sehr stark mitschwmgt, und dass ein entschlossenes Festhalten der ganzen hier eingenommenen Position auf diese Konsequenz wirklich hindrängt. Was man hier also als geschichtliche Funda mentierung des christlichen Glaubens bezeichnet, das ist im Grunde das Gegenteil von Geschichte im strengen Sinne des Wortes. Es ist die entschlossene Einführung eines supranaturalen Faktors an einem einzigen Punkt, resp. Wenn die alttestamentliche Offen barung herangezogen wird, an mehreren Punkten des ge schichtlichen Geschehens, es ist die Zerreissung des einheitlichen Gewebes, als welches der Historiker Geschichte verstehen und fassen muss. Daher es auch von hier aus nicht zu verwundern ist, wenn die Vertreter dieser theologischen Betrachtung sich wieder und wieder in scharfem Gegensatz zur allgemeinen Religionsgeschichte, genauer der Betonung des fundamentalen Wertes einer allgemeinen Religionsgeschichte für die Theologie gestellt haben. Among the works most freely used in making these additions are Gieseler's Dogmengeschichte, 1855 Neander's Christliche Dogmen geschichte, edited by Jacobi (translated by J. E. Ryland, London, 1858) and, particularly, the second edition of Baur's Dogmen geschichte, 1858. The latter work, though affected by the theo logical prepossessions of the author, recently deceased, exhibits a thorough knowledge of the different shades of Opinion, as well as of the general characteristics of each period. The additions thus made to the Edinburgh edition, and to the text of Hagenbach, in crease the matter of the volume about one third. What is added to Hagenbach, is uniformly indicated by brackets; and this includes some references and citations by the English translator. The sign T is usually prefixed to the name of a Roman Catholic author the sign prefixed, is intended to commend the work. The Edinburgh translation has been revised throughout in some instances it was found necessary to rewrite whole sentences and even paragraphs. Those passages, too, have been translated, which were there omitted, because they were found to be of such a nature as to convey little definite meaning in translation.
