Die Ausbreitung neuer Technologie und Kommunikationsmöglichkeiten hat sowohl die Wirtschafts- als auch die Privatwelt stark beeinflusst. Globalisierungseffekte haben die konstruierte Trennung der Welten in Erste, Zweite und Dritte aufgehoben. Globale Klima- und Wirtschaftskrisen in jüngster Zeit führen der Menschheit vor Augen: Es gibt nur "Eine Welt", den Planeten, auf dem wir leben. Das führt dazu, dass unser Leben heute einerseits von globalen Phänomenen beeinflusst wird, andererseits aber auch weltweite Auswirkungen hat, die wir kaum noch überblicken können. Um als Menschen und als Christen verantwortlich leben zu lernen, reicht unser derzeitiges Schulsystem nicht mehr aus - wir brauchen eine neue, eine globale Art zu lernen. Seit Ende der 1980er Jahre existiert ein pädagogisches Konzept, das dieser Erkenntnis Rechnung tragen will. "Globales Lernen" erfährt heute in der "Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung" weite Verbreitung. Dass der katholische Religionsunterricht in Deutschland von seiner Konzeption her ohne ein solches Lernen seinen eigenen Ansprüchen nicht mehr genügen, mit ihm aber eine zeitgemäße Erziehung in der christlichen Lehre realisieren kann, werde ich nachweisen. In den ersten beiden Kapiteln dieser Arbeit werde ich das Phänomen "Globalisierung" konkretisieren und Entstehung und Konzeption des Globalen Lernens vorstellen. Im Hauptteil der Arbeit wird das dritte Kapitel zeigen, dass Globales Lernen in allen ordentlichen Unterrichtsfächern laut internationalen und nationalen Bildungsrichtlinien längst umgesetzt werden sollte. Von den öffentlichen Vorschriften leite ich zur theologischen Begründung über und zeige die Übereinstimmungen von Inhalten und Kompetenzen Globalen Lernens mit den Forderungen der kirchlich

Many people these days regard religion as outdated and are unable to understand how believers can intellectually justify their faith. Nonbelievers have long assumed that progress in technology and the sciences renders religion irrelevant. Believers, in contrast, see religion as vital to society's spiritual and moral well-being. But does modernization lead to secularization? Does secularization lead to moral decay? Sociologist Hans Joas argues that these two supposed certainties have kept scholars from serious contemporary debate and that people must put these old arguments aside in order for debate to move forward. The emergence of a "secular option" does not mean that religion must decline, but that even believers must now define their faith as one option among many. In this book, Joas spells out some of the consequences of the abandonment of conventional assumptions for contemporary religion and develops an alternative to the cliché of an inevitable conflict between Christianity and modernity. Arguing that secularization comes in waves and stressing the increasing contingency of our worlds, he calls upon faith to articulate contemporary experiences. Churches and religious communities must take into account religious diversity, but the modern world is not a threat to Christianity or to faith in general. On the contrary, Joas says, modernity and faith can be mutually enriching.

Seit den 1960er Jahren sind Friedensvisionen und Friedensarbeit global an der Tagesordnung: Mit der Enzyklika "Pacem in terris" machte Papst Johannes XXIII. die Friedensarbeit zu einem Hauptanliegen der Katholischen Kirche; ähnliches taten auch andere christliche Institutionen wie der Weltkirchenrat. Auf der politischen Ebene waren in den 1960er Jahren das Ende des Kolonialismus und der Aufbau einer partnerschaftlichen, friedlichen Welt das zentrale Anliegen der Vereinten Nationen, und zivilgesellschaftliche Initiativen machten aus der Friedensarbeit einen wichtigen Schwerpunkt. Mit der Globalisierung wurde zunehmend klar, dass auch und gerade die Religionen entscheidend zum Frieden beizutragen vermögen - dass sie aber in ihren Pathologien auch ein hohes Gewaltpotential entfalten können.
