Dabei geht es nicht darum, eine der Definitionen als endgültig anzuerkennen, vielmehr soll deutlich werden, wie komplex die Begriffe sind. Es ist mir besonders wichtig, zu zeigen, dass Religion bei beiden Soziologen als tief in der Gesellschaft verwurzelt anzusehen ist und nicht als externes Element betrachtet werden kann, denn Religion hat Einfluss auf nahezu alle Bereiche des Lebens, wie etwa Gesellschaft, Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft, Kultur, Ethik, Arbeit, Politik, Bildung, Erziehung, Kunst und Medien.

Religionen und religiöse Gemeinschaften weisen gegenwärtig Tendenzen sowohl zu mehr Liberalismus als auch zu mehr Fundamentalismus auf. Das religiöse Feld ist vielschichtiger geworden - und konfliktreicher. So führt Modernisierung nicht zwangsläufig zum Rückgang der Religionen, sondern zur Pluralisierung von Weltsichten und Wertsystemen. Dennoch ist die Säkularisierungsthese nicht einfach überholt. Richtig ist vielmehr die Einsicht, dass ein einflussreicher säkularer Diskurs dem religiösen Diskurs an die Seite getreten ist - dies lässt sich beispielsweise in Krankenhäusern studieren. Daher ist es erforderlich, zwischen einem innerreligiösen Pluralismus und dem Pluralismus von religiösen und säkularen Diskursen zu unterscheiden. Das Buch Bergers beansprucht, ein neues Paradigma zur Erfassung und Analyse dieses aktuellen Pluralismus zu entwickeln.

A broad perspective on the role of religious institutes in social and cultural practices This volume examines the cultural contribution of religious institutes, men and women religious, and their role in the constitution of Catholic communities of communication in different European countries (England, Germany, Liechtenstein, the Low Countries, the Nordic Countries, Switzerland). The articles focus on social and cultural history by comparing both discourses and cultural and social practices, as well as examining international networks and cultural transference. How did religious institutes function as cultural elites in the production and mediation of knowledge, ideologies, cultural codes, and practices? What kind of discursive and operational strategies did they use to help construct and propagate social Catholicism, ultramontanism, and confessionalism, and to establish and promote the Catholic communication system?
