This volume aims to revitalize the exchange between sociological differentiation theory and the sociology of religion, which previously held center stage among the sociological classics. It brings together contributions from different disciplines, as well as various forms of regional and historical expertise, which are indispensable in forming a globally oriented sociological perspective today. Secularization is understood as a process of boundary demarcation, that is, as the enactment of semantic, practical, and institutional distinctions between religion and other spheres of activity and knowledge. These distinctions may emerge from within the religious field itself, or may be absorbed into the field having originally emerged elsewhere. They may even be directly imposed upon religion by external forces. The volume is therefore based on the premise that societal differentiation – and secularity as a specific expression of it – is a widespread structural feature that nonetheless takes on various forms, depending on its historical and cultural context. In order to make this diversity visible, the volume adopts a global comparative perspective, and examines historical distinctions and differentiations in the West and beyond. By examining different forms and modes of secularity in statu nascendi, the volume contributes to developing a better understanding of the diversity of secularities, even of those found in the present day, in terms of their historicity and their specific path dependencies. With this shift in perspective, this special volume initiates a global and historical turn in the theory of differentiation, as well as in the study of secularity.

For over seven hundred years, bodies of writing in vernacular languages served an indispensable role in the religious and intellectual culture of medieval Christian England, yet the character and extent of their importance have been insufficiently recognized. A longstanding identification of medieval western European Christianity with the Latin language and a lack of awareness about the sheer variety and quantity of vernacular religious writing from the English Middle Ages have hampered our understanding of the period, exercising a tenacious hold on much scholarship. Bringing together work across a range of disciplines, including literary study, Christian theology, social history, and the history of institutions, Balaam's Ass attempts the first comprehensive overview of religious writing in early England's three most important vernacular languages, Old English, Insular French, and Middle English, between the ninth and sixteenth centuries. Nicholas Watson argues not only that these texts comprise the oldest continuous tradition of European vernacular writing, but that they are essential to our understanding of how Christianity shaped and informed the lives of individuals, communities, and polities in the Middle Ages. This first of three volumes lays out the long post-Reformation history of the false claim that the medieval Catholic Church was hostile to the vernacular. It analyzes the complicated idea of the vernacular, a medieval innovation instantiated in a huge body of surviving vernacular religious texts. Finally, it focuses on the first, long generation of these writings, in Old English and early Middle English.

Die einzelnen Beiträge beleuchten die Beziehungen zwischen ideengeschichtlichen Entwicklungen und lokalen Konflikten mit einem unterschiedlichen regionalen, lokalen oder gar persönlichen Zuschnitt, mit Schwerpunkten in Italien, Frankreich und im römisch-deutschen Reich. Viele Beiträge präparieren die Momente heraus, in denen neue Formen der Entscheidungsfindung in Konflikten vor dem Hintergrund der politischen und strukturellen Umbrüche der Zeit sichtbar wurden. Damit geraten die vorherrschenden Forschungsparadigmen zu dieser Zeit (z.B. Investiturstreit, Feudalgesellschaft, Kommunalisierung) in den Blick und werden hinterfragt. Im Ergebnis zeigt sich, wie komplex die Beziehungen zwischen Konflikten auf der lokalen Ebene und auf der Ebene der Reiche sowie den großen, übergreifenden Entwicklungslinien der Zeit waren. Der Wandel, der die Zeit um 1100 prägte, lässt sich so in neuer Weise als zusammenhängende, europäische Entwicklung verstehen.
