Lea - its shelves still laden with that material which assumed so significant an aspect under the guidance of his distinguished mind. Such surroundings were in themselves an inspiration and she is grateful for the kindness which procured them. Thanks are also due for the courteous co-operation of the librarians of the two Friends' Libraries, of the Presbyterian and Methodist Historical Societies, of the Philadelphia Library, of Haverford College, of S. Carlo Borromeo, and of S. Thomas of Villanova. Through the kindness of Dr. Jastrow, the University of Pennsylvania Library gave the writer access to her material all over the country. Such goodwill has lent the work an ever-increasing pleasure. While reading for an earlier study on autobiography, the writer had been impressed by the present superabundance of works on religious and mystical theory, side by side with a total absence of any collation of the documents of personal religion. No one has apparently thought it worth his while to examine the foundations on which the current elaborate doctrines are based. Some years of investigation have resulted in this book. Confession written by Adrienne Von Speyr and has been published by Ignatius Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-04-13 with Religion categories.

In this second edition of her profound book on confession, which theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar calls ""one of her most central works"", Adrienne von Speyr discusses the moral and practical aspects of this sacrament in great depth. The most complete spiritual treatise on confession ever written, the book covers conversion, scruples, contrition, spiritual direction, laxity, frequency of confession, confessions of religious and lay people, and even confessions of saints. The most intriguing element in von Speyr's understanding of confession, fully developed in this volume, is its trinitarian and christological basis. The Cross is the archetypal confession, and Christian sacramental confession is thus an imitation of Christ in the strict sense. Confession examines the enormous fruitfulness of this dogmatic basis from many perspectives, giving a wealth of suggestions that both the theological expert and the layman will find very helpful. Its practical applicability to one's own confession emerges from every page.

Male Confessions written by Björn Krondorfer and has been published by Stanford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-12-03 with Religion categories.

Male Confessions examines how men open their intimate lives and thoughts to the public through confessional writing. This book examines writings—by St. Augustine, a Jewish ghetto policeman, an imprisoned Nazi perpetrator, and a gay American theologian—that reflect sincere attempts at introspective and retrospective self-investigation, often triggered by some wounding or rupture and followed by a transformative experience. Krondorfer takes seriously the vulnerability exposed in male self-disclosure while offering a critique of the religious and gendered rhetoric employed in such discourse. The religious imagination, he argues, allows men to talk about their intimate, flawed, and sinful selves without having to condemn themselves or to fear self-erasure. Herein lies the greatest promise of these confessions: by baring their souls to judgment, these writers may also transcend their self-imprisonment.

Today, too many Christians are followers of novelty, religious fads, and strange new doctrines unheard of in the history of the church. On the contrary, to be a Christian is to join the great "cloud of witnesses" (Heb 12:1) through the ages, confessing with the Body of Christ the "faith that was once for all delivered to the saints" (Jude 3). This is what Paul called the "good confession" (1 Tim 6:12). This workbook will lead you in a study of what it means to be a Christian from the vantage point of the Bible, the ancient Christian creeds, and the Protestant confessions of the sixteenth century.
