Originally published in 1992, the purpose of this book is to provide a means by which teachers of religious education can develop mutual understanding and respect for both for, and between, those of different religions as well as those without religious belief. The book has two main strengths, firstly it is based on discussion with people from different faith communities. This gives the reader an insight into how religion actually works out in practice. Secondly, the teacher is given practical advice for dealing with different issues as they may arise in the classroom.

Excerpt from Missionary Education in Home and School Some time ago the following letter was received from the director of an institute for the training of Sunday school teachers in one of our large cities: "You will note that the Training Institute is solely for the purpose of religious education. The question of arranging to have missionary instruction included another year in the curriculum is for the Board of Managers and the Teacher Training and Graded Work Committee to decide." In the mind of this Sunday school worker missionary education and religious education are thought of as two quite distinct processes. In general, this was the attitude of most religious workers ten years ago when the author began an investigation of the relation of missionary education to religious education, and especially its place in the home and the church school. This distinction between religious education and missionary education was so marked and so persistent as to make certain results inevitable. The mission boards recognized more and more that the maintenance of their work depended upon rearing a generation of Christian people in thorough sympathy with missionary work, and with full conviction that its expanding needs must be met thoroughly and efficiently. "During the Progressive Era, a period of unprecedented ingenuity, women evangelists built the old time religion with brick and mortar, uniforms and automobiles, fresh converts and devoted protégés. Across America, entrepreneurial women founded churches, denominations, religious training schools, rescue homes, rescue missions, and evangelistic organizations. Until now, these intrepid women have gone largely unnoticed, though their collective yet unchoreographed decision to build institutions in the service of evangelism marked a seismic shift in American Christianity. In this ground-breaking study, Priscilla Pope-Levison dusts off the unpublished letters, diaries, sermons, and yearbooks of these pioneers to share their personal tribulations and public achievements. The effect is staggering. With an uncanny eye for essential details and a knack for historical nuance, Pope-Levison breathes life into not just one or two of these women, but two dozen. The evangelistic empire of Aimee Semple McPherson represents the pinnacle of this shift from itinerancy to institution building. Her name remains legendary. Yet she built her institutions on the foundation of the work of women evangelists who preceded her. Their stories -- untold until now -- reveal the cunning and strength of women who forged a path for every generation, including our own, to follow."--Back cover.

Excerpt from God's Little Children, Their Nature and Religious Training for Kindergarten and Primary Teachers The years between six and nine, with both boys and girls, are marked by decided physical and mental Changes. The appearance of the second teeth is an outward Sign of the passing of babyhood, and the change in mentality warns us that the brain is rapidly developing and that new connections are being made between the nerve centers. One writer says, This wild animal period, which demands outdoor beds at home and loosened seats at school, is doubtless the era of a Struggle for a physical constitution. All the endurance, the reserve power, the tenacity of later years is being stored up during these treasure-house years between five and twelve. During the last three or four of these years, vitality is a little less exuberant. They might be called the special period of restful growth. Mentally, they are somewhat stolid and Silent.
