In Remains of Socialism, Maya Nadkarni investigates the changing fates of the socialist past in postsocialist Hungary. She introduces the concept of "remains"—both physical objects and cultural remainders—to analyze all that Hungarians sought to leave behind after the end of state socialism. Spanning more than two decades of postsocialist transformation, Remains of Socialism follows Hungary from the optimism of the early years of transition to its recent right-wing turn toward illiberal democracy. Nadkarni analyzes remains that range from exiled statues of Lenin to the socialist-era "Bambi" soda, and from discredited official histories to the scandalous secrets of the communist regime's informers. She deftly demonstrates that these remains were far more than simply the leftovers of an unwanted past. What happens when an entire modern state's material culture becomes abruptly obsolete? How do ordinary people encounter what remains? In this ethnography, Jonathan Bach examines the afterlife of East Germany following the fall of the Berlin Wall, as things and places from that vanished socialist past continue to circulate and shape the politics of memory. What Remains traces the unsettling effects of these unmoored artifacts on the German present, arguing for a rethinking of the role of the everyday as a site of reckoning with difficult pasts. Bach juxtaposes four sites where the stakes of the everyday appear: products commodified as nostalgia, amateur museums dedicated to collecting everyday life under socialism, the "people's palace" that captured the national imagination through its destruction, and the feared and fetishized Berlin Wall. Moving from the local, the intimate, and the small to the national, the impersonal, and the large, this book's interpenetrating chapters show the unexpected social and political force of the ordinary in the production of memory. This outstanding and original volume offers a critical examination of a number of developments which in recent years have undermined the idea of socialism and eroded its electoral appeal. Among these developments are the collapse of Communist regimes, the fragmentation of the constituencies upon which earlier socialist advances had depended, changes in the organization and the dynamics of capitalism and a dearth of agencies committed to the socialist project. The book also takes up and seeks to rebut older objections to socialism, such as the notion that it is inevitably totalitarian, that it is based on too optimistic a view of human nature and that it fails to take account of the tendency of power to accumulate in the hands of minorities. The book argues that a social order dominated by the logic of capital and competition cannot, despite all the positive claims made on its behalf, produce the conditions which make true citizenship and community possible. By contrast, socialism offers an attractive and feasible programme for the realization of those ideals. Miliband argues that socialism cannot be seen as an answer to all the ills which have plagued humankind. Socialism, in his view, has to be understood as part of an age-old struggle for a more just society, and he believes that, seen in this light, socialism remains not only desirable but also perfectly possible. Moreover, he believes, socialism will, in time, come to command a majority support which its advancement requires. Socialism has to be seen as a permanent striving for the achievement of democracy, egalitarianism and the creation of an economy under democratic control.

An excerpt from the beginning of the first chapter: THE MODERN DEVILONE Autumn afternoon, about fifteen years ago, I happened, on my way home from school, to be seated in a street-car behind two members of the faculty of a small college in central Pennsylvania. The pair were discussing the apparently wretched reputation of a third person unknown to me, and the elder educator rounded out his sweeping condemnation with a single fatal phrase: "Why," said he, "the man's a Socialist!"It was not so very long after the Haymarket tragedy in Chicago but that the distinctive word contained quite as much terror for me as he who uttered it patently intended it should have for him to whom it was addressed. Nevertheless, Socialism and Socialists were as vague in my mind as they were awful, and, realizing that I was in the company of the Wise Men, I therefore pricked up my ears for the reply to the question with which the second member of a college faculty in the Year of Our Lord 1893 countered this remark."Just how would you define Socialism, anyway?" he asked.It was an inquiry, I have since come to know, that few other scholars have been able to answer in anything briefer than a volume; but the sage of the street-car hesitated not."Socialism," he declared, "is masked Anarchy; but it has no more chance of succeeding than if it dropped the mask."I do not censure the professor, except perhaps because he spoke professorily; but I do say that he was wrong. Though his wish was so far from being a father to his thought, he may have erred as much on one side as the Pennsylvania instructor erred upon the other; yet, at his command, politicians everywhere opened their eyes to find that a new and still increasing army had advanced upon them as if by night. In this country the astute Mark Hanna flatly stated that old party lines are soon to vanish in the formation of a great conservative coalition to front this latter-day radicalism, and only a twelvemonth ago a President of the United States officially warned his people against " the growing menace of Socialism." From the view of the specialist, practical or theoretical, favorable or opposed, there to-day remains no doubt but that Socialism must soon be met in a desperate, even a life-and-death, struggle at the polls.

Trotskyists have long dominated the revolutionary tradition on the western left. This book provides a critical analysis of Trotskyism and argues that it is increasingly irrelevant as a means of achieving socialism. It argues that, as the realization grows that the revolutionary tradition and the authoritarianism which frequently results from it are wrong, the importance of the theory of the transition to socialism increases. The author states that on this point Trotskyism is weak; that Trotskyism's proposals for socialist transition are largely rhetorical and that its democratic impulse is weak. He supports this by showing that Trotsky's philosophy of history, implicit in his writings, which the author characterizes as evolutionary and automatiscist, coupled with a failure to grasp the distinctive theoretical structure of Marx's Capital, has a disabling effect on Trotsky's account of the transition to socialism and on his explanation of Stalinism.
