Around the world, people nearing and entering retirement are holding ever-greater levels of debt than in the past. This is not a benign situation, as many pre-retirees and retirees are stressed about their indebtedness. Moreover, this growth in debt among the older population may render retirees vulnerable to financial shocks, medical care bills, and changes in interest rates. Contributors to this volume explore key aspects of the rise in debt across older cohorts, drill down into the types of debt and reasons for debt incurred by the older population, and review policies to remedy some of the financial problems facing older persons, in the US and elsewhere. The authors explore which groups are most affected by debt and identify the factors producing this important increase in leverage at older ages. It is clear that the economic and market environment is influential when it comes to saving and debt. Access to easy borrowing, low interest rates, and the rising cost of education have had significant impacts on how much people borrow, and how much debt they carry at older ages. In this environment, the capacity to manage debt is ever more important as older workers lack the opportunity to recover from mistakes.

Reform and Responsibility in the Remaking of the Swedish National Pension System is a detailed study through Sweden's national pension system. With Sweden's recently reformed national pension system as the illustrative example, Nyqvist shows how new forms of governance effectively shift responsibility from state level to an individual level. She sheds light on how politicians, technocrats, and bureaucrats work to educate and foster the general public into responsible, hardworking, and financially literate citizens. This ethnographic example of how contemporary power works by way of new forms of governance, Reform and Responsibility in the Remaking of the Swedish National Pension System is an exploration into the art of governing of a large-scale governmental policy process

Many new retirement-related opportunities and risks confront individuals and employers in the 21st century. Opportunities include the exciting prospects of living longer, living healthier, and living a more productive life than ever before. But the risks are also huge, including the challenge of setting an income goal and then saving enough for retirement, investing wisely in a time of financial turmoil, and planning carefully for a long period of time in retirement. What are retirement needs and how much will we need to save for old age? What is retirement becoming, especially in an era of downsizing and early retirement? What assets should we hold prior to and throughout the retirement period? How should we invest our pension assets, and how can education influence 401(k) plan saving? How important are employer-provided pensions and social security in protecting retirees against old-age poverty? And what special problems do minorities and women face? Forecasting Retirement Needs and Retirement Wealth draws on the latest information available on health, wealth, and retirement in America, to offer new perspectives on ways to support the expanding population of older citizens. As these novel paths to retirement emerge, paths that involve "bridge" jobs and gradual transitions through various states of employment, they force new thinking on the concept and process of retirement. Contributors explore the difficult problem of determining what resources people need during retirement and offer ways to think about how much to save for old age. Also in the Pension Research Council Publications series-- Prospects for Social Security Reform Edited by Olivia S. No matter how far or close you think you are to retirement, this book is your one-stop guide to help you plot your direction for the coming decades. Not long ago everyone knew what the word retirement meant--retire at age 65 after 40 years at the same job and coast through your golden years courtesy of a comfortable nest egg. But now, age expectancy is higher, savings are slimmer, and people change jobs more frequently. Clinging to this outdated concept of retirement only gets you a room in your kids’ house. Your retirement is going to require an incremental approach to planning--and you must begin now. This requires conscious engagement, diverse interests, and the ability to adapt. In How Do I Get There from Here?, readers will first be directed how to review all their assets--both tangible and intangible--so they can get an honest assessment of where they are right now. Then a journey through self-reflective questions and exercises will: walk you through imagining your future, identifying skills you’ll need, and learning how to prepare for inevitable twists and turns along the way. Stop clinging to an ancient and stereotypical idea of retirement. Decades of nonstop leisure is not only unreachable for most, it’s not even truly desirable. Begin now charting the path for a unique, dynamic future you can look forward to!

Millions of baby boomers are just beginning to retire, and in doing so many are likely to run into adjustment problems, such as loss of identity, deterioration of marriage and social life, and feelings of disconnectedness to the world. Studies have found that as many as 40% of retirees have difficulty adjusting, and even those who claim to enjoy retirement may experience some uneasiness as they adapt to a life lacking in structure and direction. This book investigates the struggles faced by retirees in building a new life outside of the workforce. It provides an honest assessment of retirement, based on the not-always-acknowledged fact that it is a difficult transition with pitfalls and obstacles to be overcome. But along with uncovering problems, the authors also propose solutions to enable both current and future retirees to be better prepared, allowing them to avoid being blind-sided by unexpected situations. By reading about the experiences of their peers, current and future retirees will come to understand that others share their difficulties adjusting, and that tactics are available to improve their comfort level in retirement as well as their overall well-being. Retirees and those planning for retirement will find in these pages what they need to make retirement successful and enjoyable.

What comes to mind when you think of retirement? An age? A date? A budget? Do you regard it as a reward for work well done or the inevitable end of a life well lived? What do you envision doing once you are no longer working? If any of these questions seem daunting, this is the book for you. The author, an experienced and skilled human resources administrator, frequently encountered individuals who had not done any retirement planning beyond selecting a date and estimating a budget. He also discovered how limited the retirement literature was with most of it focused on the financial aspects to the exclusion of a myriad of other factors that go into creating a satisfying retirement. Thus began a two-year journey of research and writing to create Discover the Right Retirement for You, the most comprehensive guide to retirement planning currently available. Carefully crafted to be used by the 44 million Baby Boomers who are retiring at the astonishing rate of 10,000 each day, this remarkable resource contains comprehensive information written in comprehendible language about the many components of retirement and connects the reader to others like themselves. It is a reference book with facts and figures, a workbook with worksheets for self-inventory and reflection, and a storybook with anecdotes about retirement expectations and experiences. Distilled from extensive interviews with people just like you, Discover the Right Retirement for You invites you to explore retirement from such diverse perspectives as its effect on your health, self-image, and family, while also addressing the financial aspects. Whether retirement is right around the corner or a few years away, this is the guidebook you need to create the right retirement for you.
