"Mac" was on his way to a Halloween Party, dressed like his hero, Rembrandt. To complete his costume, he took his miniature etching press and a printing plate. The plate, however, had a magical effect and landed him on a dung boat in Amsterdam's harbor. It was now 1660, not 2012! Join Mac on the events that followed his unhappy travel in time as he was picked up by a Madam. Lucky she dumped him at Rembrandt's neighbor. However, he was drawn into the complications of Rembrandt's fallen, desparate state. Can Mac help his hero make a comeback? Or will the murderous Madam have her way with poor old Mac?

In 1652, on a backstreet in Old Amsterdam, a paper mill is working into the night as Rembrandt van Rijn, a regular customer of this establishment, makes one of his orders for fine etching paper. The 7-year old son of the owner, Arent de Gelder, goes with his father to deliver the finished paper. A casual gesture by the famous Rembrandt-a gift of an etching to the boy-changes the youngster's life. Another life-changing experience begins on October 31, 2012, when William "Mac" Handyside MacRitchie collapses in his printmaking studio. Mac comes to in a few minutes-but he is a little disoriented. There must have been some magic in the old copper etching plate he had been cleaning with lacquer thinner because, in the time of just those few minutes that he was passed out, he takes a week-long, trouble-filled quest to Rembrandt's time and place: 1660, Amsterdam. Mac's time-travel journey starts out badly as he discovers himself stowed-away on a putrid dung boat along with his Mini Halfwood etching press and printmaking chest. He embarks on a deadly liaison with a wicked procuress, poses as a scholar from the American colonies, and seeks to meet Rembrandt van Rijn. The famed artist, Rembrandt, desperate for money, believes Mac can help him make a comeback as a printmaker and so he covets Mac's Halfwood press. Mac will encounter Arent de Gelder, along the way. The rest is history!

Disclosure: This description was prompted and edited by Bill Ritchie, in Microsoft’s current Copilot, an AI text generator for the second volume of Bill H. Ritchie's two-part autobiography. We traverse the years from 1991 to 2023. Ritchie, a trailblazer in the art world continues his life story. In the first book he told how he embarked on a remarkable odyssey that defied convention and reshaped the art, craft, and design of fine art printmaking. At the tender age of 24, Ritchie secured a groundbreaking position—the youngest ever—in the vibrant city of Seattle. His appointment as a teaching artist in fine art printmaking at the University of Washington marked the beginning of a transformative chapter. But this was no ordinary academic journey; Ritchie's innovative spirit would soon set him apart, a maverick in academe. The traditional classroom was too confining for Ritchie. Driven by a hunger for exploration, he wove technology into his art courses in the 1980s. Bill Ritchie's experiments disrupted the staid printmaking department and shocked the UW School of Art. Forced to leave the stifling ivory towers, by the 1990s the emergence of electronic arts opened with the Internet and would extend the boundaries of printmaking. Ritchie's vision blurred the lines between historic creativity and cutting-edge technology, birthing a new era dating back to the Paleolithic era when printmaking was invented. Ritchie pushed the envelope. Printmaking was no longer confined to ink and paper; it now danced with video, performance, computer graphics, and games. His colleagues, patrons, and former students watched in awe, wondering at the audacity of his moves. Telling all, Ritchie weaves rich, detailed tales. In his printed books he placed thousands of pictures to enliven the narrative, capturing moments shared with those who left their marks on his journey. QR codes link videos and backstories, bridging epochs—from prehistoric cave paintings to the digital age. The echoes of ancient handprints resonate, showing that explication transcends time if replicated creatively. In a world illuminated and echoed by electronic media, Ritchie poses a poignant question: "Is there hope?" As climate change and global stressors threaten the future, his words resonate. Whether through brushstrokes or those fleeting, elusive pixels and here in eBook form and auxiliary Read Aloud option, Ritchie's legacy endures—a beacon for students of all ages, urging them to embrace creativity, defy boundaries, and find hope in the interplay of art, technology, and the human imagination.

"Ernst van de Wetering's wonderful book has taken us further than almost any study over the past twenty years, towards an understanding of the machinery of Rembrandt's genius. No one attempting to write about Rembrandt in the future will be able to do so without taking this fine work into account." --Simon Schama "Who would not have wanted to look over Rembrandt's shoulder while he painted? Among the countless books on Rembrandt, that by Ernst van de Wetering comes closest to conveying something of this experience because the author combines the qualifications of a trained connoisseur and of a practising painter." --Ernst Gombrich

A revised survey of Rembrandt’s complete painted oeuvre. The question of which 17th-century paintings in Rembrandt’s style were actually painted by Rembrandt himself had already become an issue during his lifetime. It is an issue that is still hotly disputed among art historians today. The problem arose because Rembrandt had numerous pupils who learned the art of painting by imitating their master or by assisting him with his work as a portrait painter. He also left pieces unfinished, to be completed by others. The question is how to determine which works were from Rembrandt’s own hand. Can we, for example, define the criteria of quality that would allow us to distinguish the master’s work from that of his followers? Do we yet have methods of investigation that would deliver objective evidence of authenticity? To what extent do research techniques used in the physical sciences help? Or are we, after all, still dependent on the subjective, expert eye of the connoisseur? The book provides answers to these questions. Prof. Ernst van de Wetering, the author of our forthcoming book which deals with these questions, has been closely involved in all aspects of this research since 1968, the year the renowned Rembrandt Research Project (RRP) was founded. In particular, he played an important role in developing new criteria for authentication. Van de Wetering was also witness to the way the often overly zealous tendency to doubt the authenticity of Rembrandt’s paintings got out of hand. In this book he re-attributes to the master a substantial number of unjustly rejected Rembrandts. He also was closely involved in the (re)discovery of a considerable number of lost or completely unknown works by Rembrandt. The verdicts of earlier specialists – including the majority of members of the original RRP (up to 1989) – were based on connoisseurship: the self-confidence in one’s ability to recognise a specific artist’s style and ‘hand’. Over the years, Van de Wetering has carried out seminal research into 17th-century studio practice and ideas about art current in Rembrandt’s time. In this book he demonstrates the fallibility of traditional connoisseurship, especially in the case of Rembrandt, who was par excellence a searching artist. The methodological implications of this critical view are discussed in an introductory chapter which relates the history of the developments in this turbulent field of research. Van de Wetering’s account of his own involvement in it makes this book a lively and sometimes unexpectedly personal account. The catalogue section presents a chronologically ordered survey of Rembrandt’s entire painted oeuvre of 336 paintings, richly illustrated and annotated. For all the paintings re-attributed in this book, extensive commentaries have been included that provide a multi-facetted new insight into Rembrandt’s world and the world of art-historical research. Rembrandt’s Paintings Revisited is the concluding sixth volume of A Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings (Volumes I-V; 1982, 1986, 1989, 2005, 2010). It can also be read as a revisionary critique of the first three Volumes published by the old RRP team up till 1989 and of Gerson’s influential survey of Rembrandt’s painted oeuvre of 1968/69. At the same time, the book is designed as an independent overview that can be used on the basis that anyone seeking more detailed information will be referred to the five previous (digital versions of the) Volumes and the detailed catalogues published in the meantime by the various museums with collections of Rembrandt paintings. This work of art history and art research should belong in the library of every serious art historical institute, university or museum.
