This is the story (told in nearly two hundred short recollections) of a surgeon from a family of surgeons, raised in the Arkansas oil country of the Jim Crow South. A churchgoer from his childhood, he came to a saving knowledge of Christ (along with his wife Cathy) only in the late 1970s. And from that turning point, they proved themselves to be choice servants of the Lord in countless ways--in John's case, as a deacon, a surgeon in the Amazon region, a denominational and parachurch board member, a conference speaker in Eastern Europe, a free-clinic doctor in Southwest Missouri, and a church staff member. Along the way, he took note of a host of engaging events, characters, and conversations, whether among fellow Air Force doctors on parade, with medical colleagues observing a gratifying, ancillary effect of defibrillation, or in the company of an aunt who introduced him to Roy Rogers and Stan Musial. Why am I writing my memoirs? Several months ago, my Grandson, Steven, said: Papa, you should write all the stories that you have been telling us all these years. Some day you will not be around to tell those wonderful stories anymore. If I had a booklet or some kind of way to tell the stories to my children or hopefully, my grand children, I would be a happy man. So as a result, I decided to write this book. Normally, people do not look to write a novel at the age of 78. however; I have decided to give it a try. I am a normal man of 78 years of age, in my retirement years and love life. I adore God, love my family and friends and Honor my Country, America. I guess I should start by letting you know something about me and my family. I am married to my wife, Roseanne, for 53 years and 5 months. Life with Roseanne has been wonderful. We have three children, Graceanne, 51, Steven, 48 and Anthony, 45. Graceanne is married to my son-in-law, Christopher, Steven is married to my daughter-in law, Jennifer and Anthony is married to my daughter-in-law, Theresa. We have 13 grand children and one great grand daughter. The children are Melanie,36, Rachel,34, Steven,26, Nicholas,24, Courtney, 20, Nichole,20, Christopher,17, Melina,13, Samantha,10, Michael,9, Mackenzy,8, Allyson,4, Isabella 1, and Zoe Emma,1. Thank God, they are all in good health and Beautiful and Handsome individuals.

Born in 1920 in Greensboro, North Carolina, Junius Scales, whose great-uncle had been governor of the state, grew up in the privileged environment of his family’s estate. The only black people he knew were the servants. Wanting to improve the lot of workers, mainly African-American, he joined the Communist Party in 1939 while at the University of North Carolina, seeing in the Party an opportunity to right the wrongs done to blacks and poor working people. Scales rose quickly within the Party to coordinate civil rights and labor organizing activities in several Southern states. He went underground when Party leaders were trailed and harassed by federal authorities. In 1954, FBI agents arrested Scales in Memphis for violation of the Smith Act of 1940. The only American convicted solely for being a member of the Communist Party, Scales would serve 15 months in prison before his 6-year sentence was commuted by President Kennedy in 1962. Cause at Heart follows Scales from his privileged southern upbringing through the awakening of his social conscience, his civil- and labor-rights work for the Party across the South, his arrest and trials, his disillusionment with the Party, and his time in prison.
