In the middle years of her life, Céline Frémaux Garcia recollected in this memoir her Louisiana childhood and growth into maturity--a tumultuous personal period that was transformed by violence as it was dominated by fear. The result is a detailed and sensitive portrait of a child's world of awe and wonder, color, and strife, in which the Civil War and its aftermath form the backdrop for conflict and rivalry within her French middle-class immigrant family.

With a selection of fine historic images from his best-selling book, Historic Photos of Louisiana, Dean Shapiro provides a valuable and revealing historical retrospective on the growth and development of Louisiana. From its founding in the early 1700s to the present, Louisiana has been one of the most fascinating and culturally diverse areas on the North American continent. To many people, the name calls to mind images of sleepy bayous with moss-draped cypresses and the hot sounds of New Orleans-style jazz, but there also exists a culture of hardworking people tilling the land, pulling fish and shrimp from the sea, staffing factories, and selling the fruits of their labors in the open marketplace. Showcased in Remembering Louisiana are both sides of this captivating locale, seen in over 100 vivid black-and-white photographs that create an entrancing look at this unique state.

City of Remembering represents a rich testament to the persistence of a passionate form of public history. In exploring one particular community of family historians in New Orleans, Susan Tucker reveals how genealogists elevate a sort of subterranean foundation of the city--sepia photographs of the Vieux Carré, sturdy pages of birth registrations from St. Louis Cathedral, small scraps of the earliest French Superior Council records, elegant and weighty leaves of papers used by notaries, and ledgers from the judicial deliberations of the Illustrious Spanish Cabildo. They also explore coded letters left by mistake, accounts carried over oceans, and gentle prods of dying children to be counted and thus to be remembered. Most of all, the family historians speak of continual beginnings, both in the genesis of their own research processes, but also of American dreams that value the worth of every individual life. The author, an archivist who has worked for over thirty years asking questions about how records figure in the lives of individuals and cultures, also presents a national picture of genealogy's origins, uses, changing forms, and purposes. Tucker examines both the past and the present and draws from oral history interviews, ethnographic fieldwork, and archival research. Illustrations come from individuals, archives, and libraries in New Orleans; Richmond; Washington, DC; and Salt Lake City, as well as Massachusetts and Wisconsin, demonstrating the contrasts between regions and how those practitioners approach their work in each setting. Ultimately, Tucker shows that genealogy is more than simply tracing lineage--the pursuit becomes a fascinating window into people, neighborhoods, and the daily life of those individuals who came before us.

Louisiana provided over 50,000 men into the Confederate Army during the Civil War. The state also proved a few thousand into the Union Army. Some residents served in both. As they put on their uniforms, they were pride is still evident today as they posed for a photograph to send back home to family, friends and loved one. One Louisiana soldier sent his photo back home and in his letter noted the photo cost $3.00 to take. That was quite a bit of money in those days, but the new art of photography was in its infant stages and prices were high. Regretfully, most of these photos are lost to time. However, some still exists, held onto by generations. We have attempted to reprint as many as possible of these portraits of Louisiana Civil War soldiers, dressed in uniform. Over 250 are included in this edition, from privates to top generals. Most of clothes in which they fought were probably eventually worn to tatters, and many put on the barely used dress coat carefully to identify him with the cause. Some brandished pistols, knives and swords, but they all showed their pride.

They detail their experiences in major battles, the organization of various theaters, and their yearning for the home front. Stanley Hilton's introductions and conclusions to each chapter provide historical and analytical context for individual reminiscences.

Mysterious and misunderstood, distorted by Biblical imagery of disfigurement and uncleanness, Hansen's disease or leprosy has all but disappeared from America's consciousness. In Carville, Louisiana, the closed doors of the nation's last center for the treatment of leprosy open to reveal stories of sadness, separation, and even strength in the face of what was once a life-wrenching diagnosis. Drawn from interviews with living patients and extensive research in the leprosarium's archives, Carville: Remembering Leprosy in America tells the stories of former patients at the National Hansen's Disease Center. For over a century, from 1894 until 1999, Carville was the site of the only in-patient hospital in the continental United States for the treatment of Hansen's disease, the preferred designation for leprosy. Patients—exiled there by law for treatment and for separation from the rest of society—reveal how they were able to cope with the devastating blow the diagnosis of leprosy dealt them. Leprosy was so frightening and so poorly understood that entire families would suffer and be shunned if one family member contracted the disease. When patients entered Carville, they typically left everything behind, including their legal names and their hopes for the future. Former patients at Carville give their views of the outside world and of the culture they forged within the treatment center, which included married and individual living quarters, a bar, and even a jail. Those quarantined in the leprosarium created their own Mardi Gras celebrations, their own newspaper, and their own body of honored stories in which fellow sufferers of Hansen's disease prevailed over trauma and ostracism. Through their memories and stories, we see their very human quest for identity and endurance with dignity, humor, and grace.

"When the Union entered Alexandria in the spring of 1863, most of the young soldiers of the area were off at the war front. On the following pages are the images of some of these soldiers. They were among the over 1000 men from Rapides parish who served the Confederate or Union military during the Civil War. Most were members of some 12 infantry companies and two cavalry companies which were formed in Rapides. The goal of this book is to put a face behind some of the Rapides names who served during this historic time of Central Louisiana and the nation."--Pg. 9.
