Excerpt from The Sexagenary, or Reminiscences of the American Revolution Biography, however, which is to history what groups are to the canvass, is more di rectly addressed to our individual sympathy, since it narrows the View of the observer to some particular point, and appeals to every class and condition, by the presentment of some trait, some resemblance which becomes the more striking, the more irresistible as it compares with circumstances which have be fallen ourselves. It was the opinion of Dr. Johnson that there has rarely passed a life, of which a judicious and faithful narrative would be without advan tage. It was he who also asserted that the motives of great or little actions were founded alike in the depths of the human heart upon this principle, the biography of the humblest individual might be fraught with as much ad vantage to mankind, as that of the high born, the beautiful and brave. The Prince, said he, who loses his empire, feels no more ih dignation in proportion to his consequence, than the luckless farmer, at the wretch who steals his cow. Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Revolution, or Le Loup's Bloody Trail: From Salem to Fort Edward In the month of March last, a sketch appeared in the Salem Press, entitled, "Reminiscences op the Revolution." Since the appearance of these "Reminiscences," our friends have represented them as containing historical facts worthy of preservation, and have intimated a desire to have them published in a more permanent form. In view of the foregoing solicitation, and in consequence of the seeming demand for this reminiscential article, and in consideration of the perishable nature of the columns of a newspaper, we have concluded to put the work in a pamphlet form, with some alterations and additions. Without any further prefatory remarks, the following pages are submitted to the public, hoping that they may awaken in the minds, of some at least, a spirit of thankfulness and gratitude for the great change that has taken place since the days of the Revolution, - "the days that tried men's souls." Neither her father nor her mother ever made an enemy. Her father was frank and open-hearted, with a hot temper that revolted against injustice. He often told the other landowners just what he thought of their pretences and their brutal treatment of their subordinates; but these outbursts were never laid up against him. He was universally respected and liked. His chief pleasure was to sit alone and read the works of liberal writers. Her mother was not so handsome as her father, but had an intelligent and amiable face, exquisite manners, and irreproachable tact. She had attended school at the well-known Smolin Convent in Petro grad, and was a woman of culture. She was sincerely religious.
