Traction control? Engine management? Acres of run-off? You’ve got to be joking: motorcycle racing's age of superheroes, 1988-93, was the zenith of two-stroke Grand Prix racing, when macho colonials slugged it out on evil two-strokes capable of 200mph. Even Valentino Rossi acknowledges this period as a special moment in motorcycle racing history, for he grew up watching Kevin Schwantz, Wayne Rainey, Eddie Lawson, John Kocinski, Mick Doohan and Wayne Gardner on TV as they bumped fairings and burned rubber around ultra-fast, lethal racetracks.

When the fledgeling Honda Motor Company wanted to break into Europe, they knew their machines had to prove themselves at the greatest motorcycle race in the world, the Isle of Man TT. At that time part of the World Championship series, the TT attracted the biggest names in the racing world. It was also the toughest and most challenging event of its kind. In 1959, the first Japanese riders to reach the Island experienced a culture shock when they encountered western lifestyles for the first time, and this was only a few years after the Second World War. Yet they won over young hearts and minds, and helped rebuild bridges. Not only that, Honda machines proved themselves reliable – and fast. They were soon picking up race victory after race victory and the likes of Jim Redman, Luigi Taveri and Mike Hailwood were queueing up to ride them. When they walked away from Grand Prix motorcycle racing in 1967, Honda had won everything there was to win on two wheels at the Isle of Man TT. A legend was born, and the Honda name would go from strength to strength. Yet founder Soichiro Honda never forgot how it all started, and the Isle of Man retains a special place in Honda company history.

That Jim Redman is one of the true greats of motorcycle racing is indisputable. With six World Championship titles and six Isle of Man TT wins to his credit, as well as being both captain and manager of the Honda race team, Redman's record is incredible. Born in London in 1931, he emigrated to Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, in 1952 and it was here that his racing career began. His greatest successes came during the early to mid-1960s when he dominated the 250cc and 350cc World Championships and scored his TT victories. An injury at the 1966 Belgian Grand Prix preempted the decision to retire at the height of his fame and success. Jim Redman - Man of Steel, with a foreword written by Redman himself, returns to those glory days of thrills and spills on the track, with a selection of rare photographs and first-hand anecdotes which bring the golden age of motorcycle racing sharply back into focus.

Sam Arena was, without a doubt, the top Northern California half-mile racer of the 1940s. He became a motorcycle racing legend from his undefeated seasons and by setting numerous flat rack records in the 1930s and 1940s, and later earned six National Hill Climb Championships throughout the 1940s and 1950s. After a career of racing throughout the Western United States, Florida, New Zealand, and England, Sam retired from flat track racing in 1947 to focus on motorcycle hill climbs. From where Sam left off, local riders such as Al Rudy, Larry Headrick, and Joe Leonard (collectively known as the San Jose Bunch), began dominating in their sport under the watchful eye of Tom Sifton. In 1953, after working for famed innovator Sifton for 20 years, Sam became owner of the San Jose Harley Davidson dealership which was the center of Northern California racing throughout the 1950s during the golden age of motorcycle racing. Set against the excitement of motorcycle racing, "ARENA: King of the Flat Tracks" takes you on a thrill ride through 25 years in the life of the great Sam Arena, and these modern day pony express riders who risked life and limb on Friday nights and Sunday afternoons to cross the finish line first.
